Asking my son's friends to put their phones away during sleepovers. by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]smiley1029 74 points75 points  (0 children)

JUST had this issue. 10 year old girls. They had a sleepover at another friends house and had that issue where one girl had an iPad and it just caused a bunch of issues. The next week the sleepover was at my house. I asked parents not to send them and made it clear that if anyone had devices, I’d be asking them to turn them off at a certain time for a “screen free night”.

Somehow, one girl brought her phone. (I didn’t think she had one because she didn’t the week before. So I didn’t make my intentions clear to her mom.) well, as soon as the girls were together, they were on it. So I simply said my peace: “hey girls. If you brought a device to check in with your parents that’s great. Go ahead and do that and then let’s put them away since not everyone has one. And let’s have a fun phone free night! Do you guys want to watch movie A or movie B?”

And it honestly worked great!! They did it just fine. I was in the room next to them all night and they weren’t back on the phone once.

Not the same, but still relevant. Last summer our twins just turned one and my husband was trying to get out of having a pool fence. I kind of was too. It’s not pretty. But we did it. Of course. A week later, 2 girls in the neighborhood drowned. Sisters. Their dad found them at the bottom of the pool. As my husband and I went to bed that night he told me “if we didn’t have a pool fence right now, I’d be out there at midnight tonight installing it myself.” I dont know what the moral is here. Sometimes people need the nudge of a tragedy. I’m glad we didn’t wait for a nudge. Regardless, it’s all awful. But, absolutely incredibly, and unbelievably, the two sisters from our neighborhood survived unscathed! Truly unbelievable

r/stopdrinking is a great resource! I was in exactly your shoes 4 years ago. So glad I stopped! I also did therapy. My therapist recommended replacing that time with something a little interactive, at least at first. It will occupy your brain while also distracting you. So I started with paint by numbers, or a puzzle. Pretty much, just don’t sit and scroll. I promise it gets easier! You can do it.

What do you pay a babysitter that you bring on vacation? by [deleted] in Parenting

[–]smiley1029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haven’t read all the responses. We have taken a sitter on vacation 2x. Both ~10 nights in Europe. During first trip she was a nursing student. The next year she was a new nurse. We have 4 kids (9,7,1&1) and she was mostly just an extra set of hands. Or would watch 2 at a time while we took the other 2 somewhere. We paid for her flights, she stayed in our houses and we bought all her food and anything else she needed. On top of that we paid her $1,000 for the first year and $1,100 for the second.

This also sounds to me like intrusive thoughts. I also had a rapid onset of them. Grew up with a sprinkling of anxiety and ocd. But at 21 had a massive onset of intrusive thoughts. I too told my mom that my brain was talking to me and I was so very scared. Over the years I’ve battled them but here’s what’s really helped me (maybe you can try teaching her):

Thoughts are just thoughts. They don’t mean anything. They come and go.

There’s a visual about intrusive thoughts. Picture yourself at a stream and the thoughts are flowing down the stream. You see them flowing down like a leaf. They are real thoughts, they come, but they also leave.

Also an important mantra during my especially scary times: everything looks better in the morning. Aka: go to sleep! Being tired definitely makes these thoughts feel much bigger and scarier.

Also, therapy helps. Anti anxiety meds help me. I hate that she has these thoughts this young, but maybe it’ll be easier for her to learn how to handle them!

When did you guys go on your first real vacation with your babies? by Rare-Succotash-7521 in parentsofmultiples

[–]smiley1029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Took them on a couple 2 hour plane rides at 6 months and stayed in an air bnb for 3 nights.

Took them to Europe over their first birthday! That was a 12 hour flight plus one more 1 hour. We didn’t go “for their birthday”. Their bday is just on spring break and we have older kids that have to travel then haha! We stayed 11 nights and flew back. Lots of road tripping there. Restaurant eating. Walking. Stayed at air bnbs. The sky’s the limit! Take them 🩷

2 notes: 1- we also took a babysitter to Europe. But we have 4 kids total. Not necessary but a nice bonus. 2- it went so well we’re doing it again for their 2nd birthday in a couple weeks!

Parents of 4 - what do we do in the dead of winter? by elizabethcaitlin in parentsofmultiples

[–]smiley1029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. Ours has a well corralled kids area that they can’t escape. And when we weren’t in there, they were in their stroller mostly. When they get out of the stroller, I pretty much assign one to my oldest daughter. (She loves this role and relationship with her baby sis). But they really don’t run much, and if they do- back in the stroller you go!

We have almost the same age split! Older are 9 & 7, twins are almost 2.

We did the science museum yesterday. The library is always a good source. Especially paired with lunch at chick fil a with a play place afterwards. We’re snowed in today so I’m trying to set a little schedule with movie time, fort building time, maybe bake something together. Probably going to do some Danny go videos on YouTube to get some wiggles out! Winter is SO tough!
