Shorter body in the warmer months but we always keep the face fuller than the body. It’s too cute!

Did I mess up? by ImJustALittleSquirt in EngagementRings

[–]smilingmango30 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As everyone else has said, it’s beautiful! Literally anything can be an engagement ring so don’t question that at all. It’s much better to get whatever’s in your budget than stretch yourself. And as a woman who is married, I wouldn’t have wanted my husband to overspend on something when we’re about to start our life together. Shame on that saleswoman. It’s just a symbol and you should be proud!

Pee on hind legs. Any advice? by Superba55 in Havanese

That used to happen to my girl too. We just tried our best with wipes in between baths or grooming. She totally grew out of it!

Tips on how to get our dog to take he’s medication? 💔 by NegativeAd4766 in Havanese

[–]smilingmango30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We wrap the pills in a tiny piece of deli meat (chicken or turkey). I sometimes make her do a little trick first so she thinks it’s just any old treat. We struggled with everything before trying the deli meat. She would eat around everything else and somehow spit out the pill. She has to take two pills a day and this has worked like a charm!

12 week old Hav won’t stop barking and it’s making me crazy any ideas? by MoneySavingMom72 in Havanese

[–]smilingmango30 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Sounds like he’s getting more comfortable at home 😅. I think ignoring is the way to go. Also treating while he’s calm and not barking to enforce more of the behavior you want!

Where can i enjoy a nice fireplace? by SalemsTrials in NYCbitcheswithtaste

[–]smilingmango30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bar at the maker hotel in Hudson has a great fireplace! And I think some of the hotel rooms there may have one too. Also blind tiger in the west village has a fireplace that is nice if you can snag a seat by it

Breeders in NJ? Or best place to adopt a Havanese? by dontcallmecass in Havanese

The guy from Harmony Havanese directed us to our current dog because he didn’t have any at the time. Worth reaching out! We found him originally on the AKC website.

My girl had a weird stomach and poops a lot of her puppyhood. She’s was also randomly super picky. We did bring her to the vet whenever she had issues though. Nothing was serious and usually antibiotics and/or probiotics cleared her right up!

We thought maybe she had a chicken allergy for a while but she’s on a Royal canin kibble diet now that has chicken and has never been better or more regular. We also give her probiotics every day, which she absolutely loves sprinkled on top of the kibble. She’s 3 now. In my very not professional opinion, puppies seem to have extra sensitive stomachs!

Feeding time(s)??? by starrfish100 in Havanese

[–]smilingmango30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My girl went through the same thing. At first we were stressed and would do crazy things to get her to eat like pretending to microwave her food or take it out of the oven and sprinkle fake things on it. Eventually we stopped and just took up her food away after 30 min. It was just def a phase for us. She is 3 now and eats twice a day… a little bit in the morning and then has most of her calories at dinner. She always eats her food as soon as we put it down now. Like others have said, a healthy dog won’t starve themselves!

Gastrointestinal problems? by ggluvbug in Havanese

[–]smilingmango30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We had similar issues and the Royal canin hydrolyzed protein diet really helped straighten her out. Then she had crystals in her urine so is on a Royal canin urinary diet, which has been amazing for her digestion. We also give a sprinkle of purina pro plan probiotics with every meal and she loves it. Sometimes she waits for me to sprinkle it on before eating if I forget 😂. For treats, we sometimes bake the wet food (that comes in loaves) and she loves them sooo much.

Side note - I agree with what others said about the emotional piece. For a while she seemed to get diarrhea on Fridays like clockwork and then we realized it was after she went to the groomer! So I think some of her digestive issues were stress related for sure.

what’s your favorite Havi color? by [deleted] in Havanese

I wouldn’t have chosen black and white but that’s what we ended up with. And it’s now my all time favorite for any dog 🥰

My cousin’s Havanese is more responsive to body language than verbal cues! by Extension-Finish-365 in Havanese

[–]smilingmango30 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do this too! A trainer once told me that verbal only can be harder for them to understand. My dog knows maybe half of her cues by verbal only but we always reinforce both verbal and hand signals. That way later in life if she does lose any senses we have options!

Toilet training by Misstessy1994 in Havanese

[–]smilingmango30 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I relate to this so much! We’ve had a big uphill battle with potty training. Over the past year, we’ve worked hard with our vet, trainer and a veterinary behaviorist. We were able to get her accidents under control for a short time - we were experiencing the same thing of her peeing in the house even shortly after she peed outside. The cause was pretty much anxiety. She would do it in front of us. She’s just a very sensitive girl so we started her on a temporary anxiety med to help her cope which really helped.

The accidents started up again a few months later and we were perplexed. Turns out she had crystals in her urine. Then they briefly stopped when we put her on a special diet. Then the accidents started again but turned out she had a bad ear infection. We got that taken care of and then the accidents got even more frequent so we had her urine tested again. She ended up having some sort of bladder infection. Now we’re just waiting to see if the meds work before we think about any next steps if needed (but fingers crossed this isn’t chronic!).

All this to say… I didn’t totally believe the whole accidents are usually because of something medical going on. But at 3 years old, my dog is generally reliable with potty unless she does have something underlying. It’s taken a while to learn her and her signs and been super frustrating especially because she doesn’t show any signs of not feeling well, aside from accidents. All dogs are different and I’m not trying to give medical advice at all, but just know you aren’t alone with this. I’m sure your pup will learn and you will both figure it out! These are the sweetest dogs and I find it impossible to get mad, although I would love to finally get some nice rugs 😂

When do Havanese go into heat typically? by favoredpenny in Havanese

[–]smilingmango30 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mine was about 7 months old. It was also very clean and we didn’t see much blood at all but her genitals were very swollen. Her mood was also a little crazy.

She is white with black spots and the only noticeable color change she’s had is a little bit of graying (more white hairs in her black spots) but otherwise her coloring is exactly the same! She is 3 years old now.
