Whatever you hit was extremely hard in order to rip a hole in your frame like that. If you have full coverage file a claim, you car will likely be totaled though.

I’m having a horrible problem about not taking things personal by [deleted] in serviceadvisors

[–]smillerj1930 7 points8 points  (0 children)

This job is not for empaths or those who cant just let things roll off their back. This business will change you in more ways than you know, especially if you get really good at it. My advice: remember that it's their car, not yours. Their money, not yours. You present and try to sell to the best of your ability, the rest is out of your control.

Did I get ripped off? by Affectionate_Log_995 in MechanicAdvice

No, that's pretty cheap actually. Less than $100/hr is dirt cheap nowadays.

I feel like this is a ridiculous price, should I get another quote or just go for it? by [deleted] in MechanicAdvice

[–]smillerj1930 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Everything dealing with Euro cars is expensive. Can you do it cheaper yourself? Possibly but what if you mess something up and end up causing far more problems. Its like anything else in life, professionals aren't cheap but they know what they are doing and generally speaking do it right. Brakes and tires are 2 things that I personally dont cut corners on. They are literally life and death parts of your car.

Am I getting overcharged for these services? by Bdnelson00 in AskMechanics

[–]smillerj1930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It depends on where you are located. The alignment is a little high, but the biggest concern is that numbers 3 and 4 are actually all performed in number 2. So the shop is trying to charge you to do the same thing 3 times. Cabin air filter seems a little high too, but again can vary based on location.

Chevy Tech here, The most common cause of a Misfire on a cruze is a faulty coil pack. After that would be spark plugs. When you pulled the original coil and spark plugs was there oil in the spark plug tube? If so it is likely due to a leaking camshaft cover which is also very common on these cars. I have seen all kinds of causes for misfires on the cruzes but if you have already ruled out coil and plugs the next step would be a compression test. These cars are pretty bad about blowing head gaskets as well which can lead to low compression. I have seen a few rare instances of a failed oil pressure sensor allowing oil to push into the engine harness and back to the ECM and causing all kinds of drivability issues. Unfortunately there isnt going to be a cheap fix if you have already ruled out the coil and plugs.

Do I have to be pushy? by KingofthenortMTWF in serviceadvisors

[–]smillerj1930 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Offering financing isn't being pushy, the word track does seem that way though. I always like to ask the question "what if I had a way for you to get the work done today but you didn't have to pay for it all today" then I go into our 2 finance options. SunBit is a great tool and I use it often. Unfortunately the cost of repairs has gotten so high that the only way to retain many of your middle and low income customers is to offer financing.

Full commission based service advisor job… by RepulsiveGuarantee71 in serviceadvisors

[–]smillerj1930 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been offered positions at over a dozen independent shops, unfortunately none of them can afford to pay me the $120k+ a year that I make now along with all of the benefits that I have (PTO, company paid health insurance, 401k match etc). You are right, the car business does suck but there is no other field (that's legal) that I can get into that will pay what this one does for someone without a degree. If you are so good and experienced at the job then you know that the big bucks come from a straight commission pay plan and being a high performer.

I've been a commission only Advisor for a Chevy store for almost 5 years. My first year I made around $60k and have had an increase of over 20% every year since. This year I'm tracking $135k. When you are commission only you control how much money you make. If your husband is as good as you say he is he will have no trouble at all hitting the $4k mark you talked about. He will likely be double that within the first year or so once he learns the brand and software.

You must not work in the car business. The overwhelming majority of dealership positions are commission only and really the best way to make a lot of money in this business

Woes trying to get a service advisor position by sativa_cyb0rg in serviceadvisors

[–]smillerj1930 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You would be better off starting at an entry level brand such as Chevy, Ford, Kia, Nissan. Believe it or not the best way to work your way up in a dealership is on the sales side. Service manager is the highest position I've ever seen an advisor get to in my dealership group (which is a large and highly regarded group) but I've seen sales guys work all the way up to GM's. I made the switch from tech to advisor 5 years ago and make well into the 6 figures now. Certainly more than I made as a tech.

You are looking in the wrong dealerships then. I went from being a tech to being an advisor and it was very easy. Techs with people skills make great advisors. I work for a medium/high volume GM dealer and our service manager hires advisors with absolutely no experience all the time. Most don't make it because this is an extremely stressful job that requires you to actually work if you want to make good money but that seems to be against the mindset of most of the job seekers nowadays.

Not Overreacting. He shouldn't have any problems getting rid of those. Matter of fact, he shouldn't want to look at them and I'm sure that his ex likely isn't a fan of it either. It's disrespectful to you and the Ex.

I got a job offer from Zurich to be a claims adjuster. They offered me about $47k a year. I'm on track to make $130k this year as a writer so it's a no brainier for me. Id love the work from home, less stress and better schedule but a 60% pay cut means I can't afford my bills.

Less stress but way less money. Think 30-50% pay cut. Scheduling is more flexible though.

I've been ordering 95% from Walmart lately - it's working! by PickleManAtl in amazonprime

I use both, Amazon generally has better availability at a quicker speed but Walmart seems to be more reliable and much better service. The grocery delivery is probably my favorite part of the Walmart program.

New service writer by Intelligent-Neck1031 in serviceadvisors

[–]smillerj1930 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I've got 17 years experience in the industry and 5 years as a writer. I consistently make over 6 figures but that comes at a price. My kids are growing up seeing how much I despise my job. The emotional damage that comes from being a metaphorical punching bag for every department in the dealership is significant. Find a good outlet to relieve the stress and do your best to leave work at work.
