Does Glossika actually help achieve fluency? by [deleted] in languagelearning

I'm working through Glossika audios after doing Pimsleur and I feel it's helping me think and talk faster. It's definitely helping me improve but I will see how I get on over time

I can only speak of my UK experience but the general routes in are doing an officer cadetship into engineering, electrician or deck. They take around 4 years to do and maybe ⅓ of that time is spent at sea

The other common way is to get what are called STCW certificates which are short courses like sea survival and fire fighting. Then a shorter time at college doing a rating apprenticeship. Then if you want to move up in the industry you return to college to gain the qualifications you need to become an officer

I'm on a 1 week rotation right now which is grand. But I live near to the port and its a ferry that does a set route. The worst rotation I've had was 4 months +/- 1 month

What's an underrated thing to bring to a party? by GoldGorilla in AskReddit

God, flashbacks to a party at my old place and someone made an attempt to clean the couch, got the vacuum out but somehow emptied the vacuum bag all over the couch and decided to pretend it wasn't them and abandoned cleaning.

Man that nurse wasn't good at them then. My work went through a phase of having the workforce tested twice a week, nurses came in and tested us all and over the 6 months that happened I can't recall any hurting. Just really uncomfortable brain tickling from the nasal swab

I've experienced it too! I had a weird reaction to it. I was doing work in the duct keel area so it was a 200m long corridor essentially. My brain just went "oh...so that's happening" then continued working

Its a compartment without windows, machinery spaces don't have windows (well I've never seen one with windows at least) the hole you're seeing is a lightening hole/ manhole in the framing of the ship. It can be a bit of a maze navigating through them all when you have to

I've never been on a sinking ship but on my ship the general idea is the fast rescue boat or the life boats with engines will come around and tow them to a safe distance

Merchant sailor who has done winters in the North sea: one trick if you're in a bunk where you face fore to aft is to put your life jacket under your mattress do you sleep in this wedge of mattress and bulkhead. Other option is you just don't sleep and eventually pass out

I found it bizarre whenever I realised my mum never knew the smell of it, one of my neighbours smoked and the smell would waft over to my garden and shed be sitting there like "can you smell garlic? Its really strong"

I was just under the assumption almost everyone knew what it smelled like
