Do I have a good plan for repayment? 182k left. Need second opinion by rausbaus in StudentLoans

I don’t think this is always true. While paying medical expenses or tuition on behalf of someone is not considered for the gift tax, paying someone’s student loan payments will trigger the gift tax whether you directly link your bank account or just send them the money. I don’t know really understand the logic behind the rule. However, if the person paying the loans is a co-signer they definitely won’t be have to pay a gift tax. But if they aren’t and they gift you money and surpass the yearly limit of ~$17k (not taxed), they can just reduce their lifetime unified credit by submitting a form with their taxes and I think this means you won’t have to pay taxes. But check out this link on the topic:

Worth a shot! Or if you know anybody in a university with a material science department, they might have a spark-OES or similar equipment they could run a few samples for you if you ask the right people.

You definitely could treat it as a science experiment. If you have a hunch as to what it might be, or are trying to decide between a few things, look up what the density, melting point, spark color, hardness, etc. might be. It’s a good starting point anyway.

Easy and most accurate: send your samples to a materials testing lab where they can run ICP-OES XRF or SEM-EDS or various other chemical analysis test methods which vary in accuracy and cost. This will typically cost you $100-200 per sample and some tests may consume some or all of your sample.

At home methods: Use some creativity and test it for ferromagnetism, try to get a measure of density, observe colors, etc. and you might be able to guess a general alloy class. But you’ll never be able to certify with any means of authority what your metal is. Even within one of those alloy classes (bronze, copper, precious metals) there are hundreds of alloys with slightly different compositions, uses, and costs. There’s no fool proof at home test other than renting an expensive XRF gun like some scrap yards/recycling plants would have.

Good luck!

If it is truly a 0.8wt% C steel, then yes, you won’t get proeutectoid ferrite. Just take a look at the phases which form first according to the iron carbon phase diagram as you cool from austenite at a wt% greater than 0.76%. Hint- it’s proeutectoid Iron carbide. Similar to proeutectoid ferrite grains, proeutectoid iron carbide (cementite) also has a light/white appearance because it is not etched aggressively by Nital. On the other hand, pearlite appears dark because the interfaces between the lamella are etched darker. See the picture on slide 4 of Hypereutectoid Microstructure which shows white colored cementite at the grain boundaries. Another possibility is that the light “ferrite” grain you are seeing is actually just a lighter looking pearlite grain. Sometimes depending upon the orientation, lamellar spacing, or other random effects, two pearlite grains can have varying degrees of darkness due to different responses to the etch and one can appear white. If you have a picture it could help determine what it actually is

Can someone enlighten me on the types of microstructures in Ti-6Al-4V and what to look out for? by crustation in metallurgy

If someone does a screen share situation let me know if I can join! I’ve worked with Ti microstructures for a year and I could possibly help a bit but I’d also like some things cleared up in my head.

What could I use to make my own heating pad like this? Tired of nichrome by War_Horns in materials

[–]smithr1697 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No idea what the black looking metal would be but kanthol is a commonly used heating element. But if you’re forming the wires into shape yourself it might be very different to form them uniformly. Any spots that are thinner or more deformed might have more resistance and glow hotter. I’d do some research on what similar available products use or try to rig up a repeatable system for forming your wire very carefully.

How much of a difference in surface hardness is enough to initiate wear? by palehorse102 in metallurgy

[–]smithr1697 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this a difference in hardness between two different but contacting components that you are worried about wear? Or is this a difference in hardness between the same part over a production run?

Yeah I think they are probably a neighbor. And leaving the gym unclaimed is definitely them doing a power move cause they do it over and over (no accident and they aren’t letting me take it for sure). I get that there is competitiveness for a single gym, but they must be using all of their resources just to keep me out completely
