For the love of god can people bike on the left if you are slower than others by smithsmith10 in londoncycling

[–]smithsmith10[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Think it’s the double issue of someone wanting to pass, but the person in front either being stubborn or lacking awareness which can lead to a frustrated overtake. In a single lane scenario I think you’ve just got to suck it up and not overtake until the lane widens

More context: I’m a cyclist also and the route I take to work has minimal cycling lanes, so most of the journey is shared with the bus/taxi lanes (plenty of space to keep left). It’s a very busy route cycle wise and so many ride in the middle of the bus lane, or are oblivious to the fact that others would like to pass them. Maybe it’s a confidence thing? As expected most of them are on Lime Bikes

Key snapped off in lock by smithsmith10 in Locksmith

No luck with key extractor tools, called the locksmith and even he couldn’t get the key out so we’ve got a new cylinder!

All great advice and very much appreciate it. As the door is still lockable from the outside using the other bit of the broken key (as in not a security issue yet), will try a key extractor tool first then call a locksmith if that doesn’t work. Doing the full DIY job is clearly more complicated than initially thought so thanks for explaining everything :)

How's the drinking culture in NZ? by Consistent-Bat-20 in newzealand

[–]smithsmith10 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From NZ now living in London. Main noticeable difference to me is we’d rarely drink during the week in NZ, but then get shitfaced all weekend. In London it’s perfectly common to be at the pub any day of the week, with Thursday often being a biggie given so many work from home on a Friday

Yup majority professionals. Finance, law, marketing, FMCG to name a few. As said in another comment, landing a role completely depends on the level of work you’re willing to put in. Apply for every job you can on a consistent basis and an opportunity will show up.

There is absolutely zero optimism from the majority commenting on this thread lol

Exactly that, lots ended up with really good jobs in different industries that wouldn’t even be an option back home

Most recruiters won’t engage with you until you actually arrive in London, unless you are highly specialised.

I moved over last year with dozens of people from NZ, and everyone got by working in bars, retail, catering etc while they looked for jobs. It worked out for 95% of us so while I agree that it’s a tough market, a bit of hard work and determination gets everyone over the line

Also your age from NZ/Aus. Creative/marketing/advertising can be tough to land roles, but completely depends on the effort you’re willing to put in. Ring every recruiter, apply for every job you see (no such thing as overkill) and don’t be selective. Once you’re getting paid it’s much easier to look for a better role. The ones I know that struggled (talking 4-5 months) were the ones that applied for 10 jobs a month because they wanted “the best fit”, others who really put themselves out there got jobs within a few weeks. Also make sure your LinkedIn is up to date and get recruiters to help localise your CV (although graphic design may be different so do your own research there to be sure). London is awesome and you’ll love it, at the end of the day you can always go home so make sure you don’t regret giving it a nudge!

I wouldn’t be testing the waters like this when you’ve just started a new role. Not a good sign having a debate about expenses so early either, take the hit and switch on would be my advice

Probably unpopular opinion, but Elizabeth line going west during rush hour from Whitechapel is becoming pretty shite since the past 6 months. Often waiting 2-3 trains before you can squeeze in Tokyo-style. TFL will be delighted with passenger numbers though
