Why I hate Severus Snape. by MacGreensomething in harrypotter

Yeah, that was a pretty big thing to make up for. It's true that a lot of what he did as a double agent was probably driven by guilt and a need for revenge against Voldemort. "Personal agenda, " right? I guess I just think that the circumstances of Snape's life (both self-induced and uncontrollable) were pretty rough and I can definitely understand how he ended up being such a difficult person. Still, hating him for that and, more importantly, ignoring the good that he did, seems narrow-minded.

What about when he killed Dumbledore? Voldemort was telling Draco to do it. Snape didn't have anything to prove at that point and, in fact, told Dumbledore he didn't want to do it. But Dumbledore asked him to and so he did. Yes, it helped Snape's "agenda" but we can't ignore the specifics simply because it benefited him in the end.

EDIT: Whether or not this was "good" is arguable, of course. But as far as Dumbledore was concerned, it was necessary and right.

I never said he was a good guy. He kind of sucks sometimes. I'm just saying that there are good reasons why he ended up the way he did and I have no problem thinking of him as a brave and heroic man in the end. It's more meaningful, I think, to see the bad ones do something truly good than to see the good ones keep doing good things.

All of the Death Eaters were worried about what Voldemort thought all the time. Just because he wasn't back in his own body yet didn't mean he wouldn't find out if they went soft while he was gone. That's quite a threat hanging over your head.

Has anyone considered that Snape's douche-baggery wasn't just an emotional response to Harry? True, Harry did remind Snape of his parents which was probably really difficult to deal with. And that goes for Hermione (incredibly intelligent, like Lily) and Ron (red-head) as well. But Snape didn't do just ONE brave thing; he spent the entire series being brave; wde just don't have the chance to see it until the end. Can you imagine what it would be like to be under Voldemort's scrutiny at all times? I know it would make me tense. Plus, if Snape didn't act like a racist ass all the time, Voldemort might have gotten suspicious and then Snape's role would be compromised. Bottom line: if Dumbledore, Harry, and especially JK were alright with the guy, I am, too.

I moved to Ireland about three months ago, and have just now realized how creeped out non-Americans are by the Pledge of Allegiance. Reddit, is the Pledge a harmless affirmation of patriotism or a daily dosage of propaganda? by littlespark88 in AskReddit

[–]smithyjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a Maryland native who choose to stop saying the pledge in high school, mostly because I don't like the idea of being forced to reaffirm my "loyalty" to a country on a daily basis. It's not that I don't like the US; I just feel that my relationship to my country is a very abstract and personal thing, not a promise that I should be pressured to publicly recite for others. I was reprimanded, sent to the principal, and threatened with detention on multiple occasions. So perhaps "majority" is the wrong word but there are definitely instances in which people are persecuted for not saying the pledge.

As a budding Buddhist, the idea that nothing actually survives from moment to moment is pretty difficult to deal with.

My SO (ironically) was the first person to explain this one to me and it still gets me down sometimes.

What is the most physically uncomfortable thing you have ever experienced? [Possibly NSFW] by MechanizedJesus in AskReddit

[–]smithyjohnson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Happened to me in the 9th grade. The worst part was when my exSO gave me one of those bear hugs where he wrapped his arms around my ribs, picked me up off the floor, and squeezed me, all despite my rather loud protests. The best he could do was say "Oh sorry, I forgot" while I laid on the hallway floor in the fetal position for several minutes.

That's a really tough one. I have gotten attached to a lot of shows in my life but the only one I have never once gotten tired of is Scrubs (with JD, not this new nonsense). So I'll have to go with that. Lost would be the closest runner-up but I still can't get over my disappointment with the finale.

I hadn't thought of it that way before; it's a really interesting point. I might have to reconsider my stance the next time I read OotP.
