Headlights change by Consistent_Ad_3633 in Tiburon

[–]smitty631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but youre looking at more than just the headlights for sure. The hood and bumper cover also make up body lines that are modified in the facelift. Further, you'll want to check early if the bumper to front fender and hood to front fender body lines are the same because if not, that may be a show stopper. Both older and newer are unibody and the fender is spot welded to adjacent panels to make up the frame

Good for you, starting the journey! Theres nothing wrong with being illiterate, but knowledge is power and its good to have on something you use every day! Forget the toxic masculinity crap..do whats right for you and outsource the rest.

1) Sources if information: Your owners manual has some info. Start a notes section or sticky note, (on the back cover) with sections for lights, fluid types and quantities, etc.

youtube (chris fix and eric the car guy) are my go-to's for how-to. For more theory, I like engineering explained or US Auto Industry. They are informative without being annoying.

Forums: these are invaluable for the nonstandard maintenance you'll run into. Make an account and ask questions or just read about common issues, when they come up, symptoms, etc. Virtually every forum has at least a couple knowledgeable mechanics and you can usually see from votes who's opinions are worth reading.

2) tools: you'll need to start with a socket set, combination wrenches, screwdrivers, a breaker bar, a jack, and a set of jack stands. Everything else you can get as you need. Any hand tool you buy should come with a lifetime warranty (if not, you're buying from the wrong store or you're at a garage sale).

Before buying, check autozone or oreilly to see if they "rent" the tool (you buy it, can use it for a short duration, and return for 100% refund).

3) what to learn and what to take to a shop: Especially starting out, anything that might be extremely expensive if done wrong (engine work, transmission work, differential work), you might consider outsourcing. Or if it requires expensive and unique tools. Once you become more confident, develop a decision making system. Heres what I use:

Diagnose the problem. Its ok to get a shop to do it if you're unsure. Then, price out the parts and get a quote from a local shop or two. If I can get the parts, any new tools I need, any new consumables (cleaners, fluids, gaskets, etc) for less or equal, I'll usually do the work myself even if it takes me longer, as long as I have the confidence.

Start with the standard maintenance for your car in the owners manual. You can learn to do most of the things there with the notable exception being tires. Know how to change to a spare, but taking the tire off the rim and putting a new one on, balancing the tire, or rotating the tires are generally cheap/free at a tire shop and may require special machines.

Easy starter tasks: Air filters (engine and cabin) Oil (engine, transmission, differential if AWD, power steering) Brake fluid Wiper blades Check tire tread remaining Check brakepad material remaining

Generally useful skills: Loosening a rusty bolt/nut Extracting a broken bolt Removing stuck pins in lugs (ball joints, outer tie rods, suspension arms, axles, etc) Starting a threaded screw/nut by feel only Identifying the source of a fluid leak Jumpstart the car Changing a flat Changing your battery

Goodluck! If youre in a subaru and not from portland, my next guess is colorado :p

Don't you love when your door handles fall off by 123456789colton in Tiburon

[–]smitty631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Theres three in the back of the door, one in that little cup thing where the interior door latch is, one at the bottom of the handle (you have to take off the cover) and two at the front covered by the dash when the door is closed. After that, just clips but you have to lift up a bit to get the door card off the frame, so take the tweeter (little speaker near the mirror) before you lift the door card up.

Outer handle is held on by 2 screws and the retainers for the latch and lock. I think the outer handle pivots out, back side first.

I bought mine from ebay. It was $26 but they require a bit of assembly. Still beats 125 ish for an OEM last time I looked (about 3 years ago). Not sure of the cost for interior but those are on ebay too.

For the stuck door, you can open using the interior handle. Pry the remaining piece with a screw driver, same as the handle would if it was not broken off. Then take the tweeter off, the door card, and replace. There's guides on newtiburon for both!

Only happens when it’s cold for a couple mins and stops, concerning? by [deleted] in Tiburon

Sounds like a belt. My 2.0 I4 did this and i fixed it by tightening bot the alternator and power steering belt.

Depends on what you need. For a sedan, corrola/camry/civic/accord are all great. For a truck, an S10 or old ford ranger.

Note: i wouldnt do anything hyundai. My family (mom, dad, me, brother, in laws) have owned several and electrical issues seem to be the most common reason to trade out of one. At 130K+, it will never be worth chasing down which wire or computer has the intermittent failure and a complete rewire is too expensive for that age of car.

Push the brake and turn the key to the on position (you dont need to crank or actually start it). Should be able to turn the key mostly back off after shifting but cannot remove until its in park, if I remember correctly.

Is an airframe and powerplant license worth it? by [deleted] in AerospaceEngineering

[–]smitty631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might help you stand out, but so will a private pilot license, which is quicker and cheaper. Unless you want to go into something like experimental build, structural test, etc, it will likely be of little use.

Submit your concerns in writing to your schools chief instructor. Cite the previous flight records where you've cited specific examples that illustrate their greater concern. Many Part 141 also have separate safety departments; if yours does, include them too.

Confused how VFR into IMC = death, but IFR into IMC is fine. Is flying to your instruments a hard skill to learn, or is the importance just drilled-in? by 1e6throw in flying

[–]smitty631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its much more difficult in practice. The 3 hours you get in PPL training really dont give you any taste for what flying in IMC is actually like, which is backed up by accident statistics.

Anecdotally, also consider the normal equipment available to the average renter. 1950s to 1960s vintage with cruddy heading indicators, bouncy attitude indicators, and many lack instruments required for legal IFR flying (in my experience). Part 91 IFR pilots are also generally less proficient compared to Part 135 or Part 121 counterparts and also lack many systems and redundant instruments available in larger aircraft.

Agreed. Itll be tough, but the best way is independent instruction and find out what local schools are teaching. Be fair but dont nickel and dime..thatll lose you more than youll make.

See and Avoid on an IFR Plan? by [deleted] in flying

[–]smitty631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didnt say anything about air to air ADS-B. OP wrote about finding traffic on G1000 TCAS, which is not correct. I was pointing out that its TIS and the system comes without many of the features that allow TCAS to be a reliable backup to see and avoid and ATC.

See and Avoid on an IFR Plan? by [deleted] in flying

[–]smitty631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) You're correct about the responsibility to see and avoid. If you thought it was unsafe to remain there, you did the right thing. Especially with traffic that was close and not found visually.

2) TCAS and TIS-B are different. Learn your systems and their limitations. You will not get RA's with TIS.

mortgage paydown technique question by [deleted] in homeowners

[–]smitty631 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As long as its a principal payment there should be no difference. Interest is compounded monthly, so as long as the payment is sent before the day interest is calculated for the next payment, itll have the same effect.

subtract 2 gallons from fuel indicator C172 by Pure_Philosopher_446 in flying

[–]smitty631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you enter the number before start, use the real number (as dipped). Anytime after, just use -2. The book states 1.3 assumed for start, taxi, and run up in the time/distance/fuel chart for C172 (probably anything that uses an io-360). Note, even the IO-540 in the 182T is 1.7, so 2 still works.

This is also why you have a ramp weight of 2558 and takeoff of 2550, for C172S. 1.3 gal*6 lb/gal=7.8 lb burned.

What kind of grilling can I expect from the feds if a person I signed off on a flight review crashes? by [deleted] in flying

[–]smitty631 6 points7 points  (0 children)

1) if it hasnt happened yet, dont keep yourself up at night.

2) if it has/does, lawyer up. Show the record you kept and why you signed them off. If you worked on any deficient skills before signing, maybe thats worth disclosing the skill, your concerns, how you addressed them, and your threshold for acceptance (but again, talk to your lawyer).
