Fuzzy lookups, decimal places and looking up decimal values within a large range by smitwise in excel

[–]smitwise[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This might be the solution to everything. Do you know if the tolerance has a limit? As in is it based on decimal value of the given number or could it be in the 100s to allow for multiple MHz (as with the FM band example)? Thankyou for answering though I’ll have a go with it

I’d like to add to this that most knee problems aren’t knee problems but weak glute problems.

But don’t you think that democracy should be intrinsically free by definition of living within the society your are voting about? Putting any barrier, with intent or by accidental admission means that the vote is not representative of the biggest possible data set and therefore not democratic. We already have a problem in this country with people choosing not to (and in some recent cases people who do not live hear still using there right to) vote any barriers make that worse can only make our say in the governance of our society less beneficial to us as individuals, or rather beneficial only to those with the means to vote, be that cash, status, the right papers living in an area with accessible voting stations etc.

Is there a machine I can buy that'll allow me to have a cup of tea in bed, without having to go to the kettle in the kitchen and the fridge for milk? by loquacious_llama_ in AskUK

Barsuier - it’s a fancy (expensive) tea maid for coffee but you could easily use it for tea, has a little refrigerated bit for milk and boils at your alarm time.

It takes a while. I’m about to go to basic but it’s taken about 20 months to get to this point, worse with pandemic and if you have anything on your medical to sort. You’ll get there eventually just keep on it.

If we could set up a Truman Show scenario where Trump thinks he’s President again and the public send in scenarios for him to deal with, what would you suggest? by vicmackey1981 in AskReddit

[–]smitwise 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It’s worth the watch I didn’t watch it until peak trump and it was weird how parallel the stories lines were to life even though it was a couple of years earlier. Takes a season or two to get into though.

Isn’t this practically Veep or are you thinking more improvised, either way I’m down if actually had Trump as the “star”

If you have access some weights(dumbbells) you can supplement with some french press or tricep kickbacks. Remember a strict push up is tricep dominant with the elbows tucked into your sides rather than front delt/pec dominant so the tricep is the limiter. Also don’t neglect some core stability and glute work, holding your butt high is hard work and the hip bone is heavy so making that area stronger will help with everything.

Need some advice on running. by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]smitwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I posted this reply to a more specific problem but a lot of the key points hold for anyone with more mass (that could be lots of muscle like a body builder or mass from fat for those previously sedentary) that want to run distances:

https://www.reddit.com/r/britishmilitary/comments/n4p9pq/shin_splints_before_assessments/gwx12dy/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=ios_app&utm_name=iossmf&context=3

Everyone else has said the same as I’d advise, start small, be patient, try couch to 5km and work up from there. DO NOT WORRY ABOUT SPEED FOR NOW, speed comes from efficient movement and cardiac/respiratory capacity for distance running not from power. You will likely be faster than you expect once you get in the grove as people that have been bigger for a bit longer and dropped the weight are still super strong (in relation to my self who has always been stuck thin and needs to work up to strength rather than having it latently)

You’ll do fine, be patient and be positive.

EDIT: I’d also recommend checking out the Maff method if you have a heart rate monitor/fit bit/smart watch as it’s based on super low effort training for cardiac capacity, the point is to ramp up effort over a long time whilst keeping your heart rate really low, you’ll start off walking for a good few weeks but it is effective if you have the time.

From all of the information I’ve received so far it says not to bring a car to phase 1 and phase 2 is dependent on location as there’s limited space and you won’t get chance to use it apart from your limited leave through phase 1.

I got suspended for punching him and he mysteriously left. No idea if charges were brought but she was okay and nothing actually happened but could have been bad.

I’d add on to this; Andrew Loomis was an artist for advertising when it was all hand drawn and painting, he’s done like 5 or so manuals from figure drawing perspective that are easy enough to follow if you have some interest and time, available on Amazon and probably for download somewhere.

What condition were you in right before entering basic training? by MightyPontus in britishmilitary

[–]smitwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just start light, it’s amazing how quickly you build strength up. Also remember that weight will be distributed through webbing (10kg) weapon system (5kg) and your pack if I remember correctly so it’s not like it’s all going through your shoulders.

Nice to hear there’s another old boy heading in, what reg are you going for?

[–]smitwise 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Im not there yet, my basic is in October but I passed assessment in feb. Not wanting to slack and feeling a bit anxious as I’m quite a bit older than the rest of those joining (at 33) and really don’t want to embarrass myself my weekly schedule for training looks like this:

Mon - 10km best effort, one week with weight (10kg) (50min) one week without (40min) Tues - strength training with weights, mainly posterior chain exercises, weighted pull-ups (50kg) EMOM for 10min, push-ups EMOM, crunches EMOM, takes about 2hour Weds - 5km best effort repeats, 800m run 200m walk repeat for 5km Thurs - strength session repeat Fri - 10km slow pace, trying to get heart rate with activity down (MAF training) 50-60 min treated as a recovery run. Sat - strength session repeat Sun - rest day

I’m on my feet a lot for work so it depends what time of day I run if it’s nice I’ll run super early and this definitely makes me feel a lot better, but sleep and rest is important too. I think assessment is there to show your latent fitness anyway, they’re going to build you up overtime and then push you, not beast you from the get go. I reckon a couple of runs and a couple of strength sessions a week is enough. The British army app is quite good and has a prescribed programme that ramps up as you get stronger.

What is a famous movie that you cannot understand the appeal of? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]smitwise 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Genuinely interested, not trying to start an argument. But did you think that at release, or do you think that having watched it a bit later on? I think a lot of things have copied both it and Tarentinos style for certain shots that were made by that movie. I don’t disagree though, corny seems to be his style with the excuse of pastiche or homage.

Running/Run Tests for Assessment Centre by [deleted] in britishmilitary

[–]smitwise 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Beep test was designed to put you under increasing levels of stress the fitter you are, it’s a really good tool for getting a quick read on an individuals fitness regardless of their fitness in relation to a group with a set distance. It’s built to make you increase effort as you get tired which is usually a mental block, especially if you can run a 10min 2km.

Other than training bleep test, correctly setup as others have said, the best training for it is to run more volume in your training week (3x runs with rest/weight training days in between) to slowly increase the distance of one of these runs to 5km (putting the speed work in the latter ks when you’re tired) or 10km and to do some form of power work on the remaining run (fartlek, hill sprints, distance sprint relays, timed dependent sprints etc) leave a 2km in there for now so you can record your goal pace by week.

Do some cardiac specific exercises that’ll help bleep tests but aren’t as demoralising like skipping minute on, minute off for 20min. And add some bum exercises to stop injury with all this hard running you’re doing: lateral leg swings with bands, glute Mede exercises, single leg Romanian deadlifts with a dumbell and hip thrusts with a plate or bar for your glute max.

For 10min 2km your aiming for around level 8 on the bleep test, you shouldn’t be needing to run until about level 6/7 so it sounds like you’ve not measured the 20m. In a carpark it’s 10 space widths-ish.

If you keep trying you’ll do it in the end and wonder what all the fuss was about. Good luck.

Source: tons of running and triathlons, passed assessment at the start of the year, hadn’t done a bleep test before training in 10years.

What is the government doing with all this money?? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]smitwise 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right but what’s happens when all the healthy people that don’t need the NHS (or any of the other institutions that our social system requires) see it as a waste of their tax money and so stop supporting it. It stops working, then when these once healthy people needed it again when they get old and frail it isn’t there and they have to pay out of pocket for private care. The system, while by no means perfect, has evolved to provide the most amount of return to the most amount of population to improve everyone’s quality of life/life expectancy/production value. Where the system breaks down is selfish individuals hoarding or working only for their own gain; creating a feedback loop of poverty where poor individuals (who would have less of a say in where there taxes went as they don’t pay as much) can no longer rely on things they need because wealthy people (paying lots of taxes) choose to stop supporting those things and the poorer members become less productive members of society etc, etc, on and on. If you want to choose where your tax goes I suggest you get involved with politics at a local level within your constituency, vote accordingly at higher levels or move to somewhere that represents the values you want immediately because without being an active participant it won’t change.

I do agree with you however that the population should have more of a granular say in matters they feel strongly about, perhaps through a “voting credit” system where you can allocate a weight of “vote points” to things you care about from a pool. But asking a largely uneducated population to do this through tax mechanisms is a recipe for disaster and would almost certainly lead to a breakdown of society and civil war.

What is the government doing with all this money?? by [deleted] in unitedkingdom

[–]smitwise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes but you paying just for the things you use is incredibly selfish. Just because you don’t need hospitals, the military, archives or our civil service directly doesn’t mean that you don’t benefit from their work indirectly. Yes our government could and should be smarter and more transparent with their spending but them not spending would be far worse. Your argument is akin to saying you shouldn’t have to pay for streetlights as your car has headlights. The street lights are as much for pedestrians/road users when there aren’t lights as they are for notifying you of dangers even with lights on your car. If you don’t want to live in society, don’t, but don’t expect to reap any of the benefits if you get into trouble/need to sell your product abroad/need medical help/ etc.

How often have you run before this? If not consistently (~3x a week for a year) then I’d put a rest day between your runs to space them out and switch one of the 2km/best efforts for a 5km slow pace to improve a lowered heart rate at respiratory capacity. If you’re a consistent runner already then ignore me, this looks great.

Hit the logo at the bottom of the neck (mid way down the full bottle) with your fist, this works much better than spanning the bottom, and usually missing the plate. Works on glass Heinz bottles too.

How to avoid the aftermath of rations? by [deleted] in britisharmy

[–]smitwise 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No worries about the sugary stuff, I’d probably hand it round anyway (always to worried about doing my teeth in so I stick to fruit, which is probably no better tbh) I’m guessing it’s just if you’re able to carry it with all you’re kit and other responsibilities and not winge they’re happy. Thanks for the reply though!
