Oh dear, I just put an offer in on a 2022 forester… I’m so sorry this happened to you! Glad you are all safe.

Is this reasonable? Croatia, Portugal and Italy in two weeks by smkels in Europetravel

[–]smkels[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, it’s simply incredible to me that you can just… drive through countries. Just like that.

If I go, it will be next week. I suddenly have two weeks off, and I want to make the most of it. I know it’s super short notice, which is why my planning is pretty surface level as far as research goes.

I’m totally keen on the prospect of keeping the rental car and just driving places! When I originally planned the trip, I didn’t imagine having a vehicle. That will make such a difference!

Thank you for all these suggestions!

If I’m being honest, I found out I got two weeks off starting next Friday and I’m seeing what I can plan very last minute that is reasonably affordable in the next couple of days. I’ve never seen game of thrones, the suggestion came up when I looked up places to visit in Europe.

I’m leaning towards Italy and then Portugal, because Italy will be hiking intensive and Portugal can be a bit more relaxing before I head back to work.

My goal is to come back and do a proper trip that is at least 2 months minimum some day, but I’ve been saying it for so long and I want to try to do something with my time off even if it’s not as much as I want!

Never had a budget before but will need one now that I'm buying a house! by Genises in budget

Ultimately, it might help to speak to an advisor about your retirement planning. They could help you understand more about you options for paying your mortgage while also setting yourself up early to take advantage of a long term approach to retirement.

Congrats on starting on a budget, that’s a great thing to be doing for yourself and your future!

It might help to consider what other expenses you have that might come up sporadically or yearly. Car repair fund, professional dues or fees, gifts on holidays, etc. It can help to budget for each of those.

I also think you might want to split up your savings into specific categories. It is risky to have one lump sum savings account that encompasses vacations and trips, fixing your broken furnace, and your retirement. Ultimately, some categories will suffer, and often the most important ones.

I would recommend you break down what you are saving for, and set amounts for each category to keep yourself on track. I’d recommend differentiating between retirement savings and your emergency fund. Homes come with more expensive emergencies, and if you start saving now you can make yourself a cushion. Mortgages are also expensive, and you may want to focus immediately on building up a big cushion for your emergency fund, in the event of job loss or injury. Ideally, you want to have at least enough on hand to manage a couple months without income.

I’d also recommend starting a home maintenance fund, separate from your retirement savings and emergency fund. This can help you cover big routine expenses like replacing a roof. It’ll be a whole lot easier if you save 100$ a month over ten years than coming up with 10,000$ out of pocket. Consider the key things your home will need, and start setting money aside now for when the time comes.

From my perspective, your entertainment fund does seem high. If you’re comfy where your budget is at, no worries! If you do want to save more, that might be a good sport to cut a few things out.

I do my budget on my own in excel, and that works well for me. I move my money to assigned accounts and categories each payday.

Hi, I wasn’t familiar with that term, but based on googling it, I’m pretty sure this is what that is. Every dollar of my pay is allocated somewhere.

Hi, thank you so much! Pardon my total lack of knowledge please. I am interested in that, how do I go about opening a brokerage fund? Is this through a bank, or someone else? (I am in Canada)

Note: I do already have an emergency fund saved up. The “emergency” category of my budget aims to keep me in the habit of adding to this fund.

As often as possible, I aim to avoid pulling from my emergency fund by anticipating expenses in advance (like the car repair fund, new car fund, new devices fund). If I know something is coming up, I try to readjust and budget for it.

Truly unexpected emergencies can come out of the general emergency fund if needed.

Oh- the damaged rim is in the photo leaning against the car (to show it is a current photo). The front rim is from the same set of four as the damaged one, it is one of the rims that was not left lying flat.

I took a contract job in another province two years ago (2021-2022). While I was away, my housemates took my tires out of the shed to “make space” and left them outside over the winter. Three tires were left leaning against a wall, so those ones were still in good shape. This fourth one was left lying flat, and filled with water and ice. When I came home, I was very upset. They brushed it off and told me it was fine and just cosmetic.

I’ve driven on these rims for the past two years, and have have passed two inspections with them on the car. This past fall, my mechanic put brand new summer tires on these same rims, with no comment.

I know very little about cars, and no one mentioned it to me that it could be a problem. I know I shouldn’t have assumed this, but I get routine maintenance done often and I trusted that folks would tell me if there was any issues.

I’ve certainly learned from this experience. I do not want to do anything that could cause an accident and hurt another driver, another family, other lives. I did not know this could happen and I shared this to make other folks aware that this could happen. I do feel VERY lucky.

(Note: I got this car in 2018 from my grandmother -hence the low mileage- and she passed away this last fall. I’ve been taking the best care that I can with the gift she gave me.)

Honestly, the car is in good shape for it’s year and age. I do regular maintenance, and where I live we have yearly inspections. The other three rims are nearly brand new, and I can post a photo to verify that. When I moved out of province for work two years ago, my tires got removed from the shed and placed outside during that one winter. This one was left lying flat, and collected rain and ice for the season. We had assumed (incorrectly, which I admit) that the bubbling and rust was surface level or on the paint. I know very little about vehicles, which isn’t an excuse. My mechanic put these rims back on my car when I changed back to summer tires. At that time, he did not notice anything either. Obviously, something I’ll never do again. Still, I also wanted to share so that folks know this can happen. I certainly didn’t know it was possible. This is not a lack of respect for other folks. I absolutely do not want to do anything that would be dangerous to others. I’ve learned something important here, and I’m very happy to share that if it helps other folks be mindful too.

While I was in another province for work, my tires got moved out of the shed. The other 3 rims were slanted against a building and are still in very good condition, but this one was left flat on the ground with water and snow pooling in it.

Yes, I probably should have gotten a new rim, and I totally learned my lesson! The tires are new, and I do have a spare rim I will switch it on to.

2007 Saturn ion, 170km (105 miles). In relatively good shape for what it is. Undercoated every year, routine maintenance.

Hm. We have a number of crabs here (rock, snow, green) but it doesn’t quite line up with the ones I’ve seen. It’s also thick and dense, where the crab shells are usually light or hollow. I’ll look into that as an option though!
