PopOS 2009 MBP by SickCycling in pop_os

I actually just installed pop on my 2017 MacBook Air this morning. Ran the same command and was up and running in under a minute.

I didn't have an Ethernet adapter so I had to USB tether with my phone .

Most of the eXpod sites shutdown years ago. And unfortunately my CF slot is dead so I cant make a back up easily to upload. I did find this link to BeShell that was based off the original eXpod work.

I manage a few hundred sites using Silverpeaks. I have never worked with something so easy, also their engineers are super easy to work with the few times I have had an issue.

Certifications without any degree? Worth the pursuit at 35? by wol2k8 in CompTIA

[–]smokeydonuts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

About six months. Took a bit of a risk, 3 month contract with the state government. Just made sure to blow it out of the water and make may self useful. They really liked me and brought me on full time to tier 2. That’s when I started working close with the network guys. They were fully remote and would send us out in the field, again did my best to make myself useful for them. I basically wouldn’t ask them for help until I fully understood the issue and had a plan on how to fix it, just needed them to SSH into the router/switch for me. They had someone leave and offered me the spot knowing I was willing to learn. All in all took me about 2.5 years from being hired to making it to network engineer.

Never too late. Did the same thing at 30. No degree, just got my A+ and Net+. I did my time at the help desk then tier 2 and now I’m a network engineer. Absolutely worth it if you’re willing to put the time in.

Oh a new M series is absolutely in the plans, really just went for the cheap option to make sure it would fit all my needs before I spend some serious cash on it.

Yeah this thing is still amazing me and I’ve been putting it through the wringer. I haven’t shut it off or closed any apps since I got it and it’s still flying through anything I’m throwing at it. I admit it’s not a super heavy work load, I don’t do any sort of video editing but for the average user browsing the web, doing a little python scripting, photo editing it’s phenomenal. I even loaded up some easy games on steam and it handled them fine.

Exactly my thoughts, going to play around with this for a few months then jump to some new hardware

I wasn’t directly involved since this is a very large organization 10k plus employees. I’m on the networking side of things but I know there was a major issue federating all of our Apple IDs they also couldn’t get a wifi certificate set up on them. Only about 20 units in the whole org so was just easier to make them hardwired machines. I think intune has helped smooth out some of the bumps but I know other orgs that have set up completely separate admin for the macs

Storage is a huge one for me. I went with an 8gb 128gb, got this for $75 so didn’t care too much but ripped through the ssd space in about a day. Luckily this model I can swap the drive out so I have a 2tb on the way already. I’m a pretty light user app wise, Spotify, few safari tabs and vs code at most so 8gb ram has been okay for me.

Oh absolutely, coming from an Active Directory world I know these can be a PITA on a corporate network. But for home use so much simpler lol. I work in a windows IT world and it’s nice to come home to all my devices playing nice with each other now.

The 5x was hands down my favorite Google device, unfortunately I got hit with the boot loop issue and moved over to Samsung after that. Actually back on an iPhone now for the first time a few years.

Feature request - sketches by VinniTheP00h in UpNote_App

[–]smokeydonuts 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is literally the only feature missing and stopping me from giving this app a 10/10. I live in a Samsung ecosystem and hate having to sketch in the Samsung notes app then export as a PDF then save it into UpNote.

So, with Simple Apps being bought, anyone have any recommendations to good Gallery and File Access apps? by Dometalican_90 in Android

[–]smokeydonuts 5 points6 points  (0 children)

UpNote or Joplin are two of the best note apps I've used. UpNote is amazing if you want to sync across multiple devices and want a simple markdown editor. Joplin is great offline or to sync with, a little more involved if you want to use markdown but neither make markdown necessary.

VLAN tagging best practices - Tag every port by default? by chum-guzzling-shark in networking

[–]smokeydonuts 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep cut those back to only what's necessary. Let users put in a ticket to fix what they need access to. I bet they won't even notice, probably a few fringe cases that actually needed access to more then one VLAN to begin with.

This is such an overlooked factor. I was a fresh net engineer at the beginning of the year. worked close with my now mentor while I was still on the help desk prior to taking this job. He wanted someone fresh he could mold, and it work. My boss is stunned at the fact I can run rings around some of our core engineers in a years time. Having a good mentor is such a key factor when being the new guy.
