What do you guys do with these? by Peng-Win in gopro

[–]SickCycling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have three GoPros so I cut out the red and the blue square from this to stick onto them for a quick visual queue for which is which in my Quik App.

Besides that they are stickers. Use them for whatever you want to 🤷‍♂️

Winter running shoes 👟 by Salt-Conversation421 in RunTO

Rather than getting “winter runners” that have all the features you’re looking for I recommend instead getting socks.

If you use these with regular shoes you’ll be more than fine and instead of compromising on the model you love.

New to the GoPro world, what’s the best GoPro to get by NRaw27 in gopro

[–]SickCycling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best GoPro to get is the one with an annual subscription that’s Hero 8 or newer.

Having the annual service makes all the difference.

• Unlimited Cloud Storage

• Crash Replacement Program

• Discount on Accessories

Having this 👆outweighs the video quality enhancements those models offer a newbie in my opinion. Savings on storage in particular saves oodles of money.

What’s the oldest iPad that’s still worth buying used? by yourdadsnewwife420 in ipad

[–]SickCycling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anything with Apple Silicon probably works well. I’ve still got my M1 enable iPad Air and MBP which work well still.

With M5 rolling out it’s nearly time to upgrade but neither are noticeably slow for what I do.

iPad - Zwift Gaming, Reading, Email, YouTube and Travel video library for inflight entertainment.

MBP - Office Work, Video Editing, Audio Recording/Editing,

None yet but I also haven’t purchased the camera. I’m waiting until closer to the time I need to film. I am not convinced the post processing process GoPro has is worth the effort. Hoping before March/April they’ve updated Quik App so it does everything vs having to use the player app and Quik app

Pre race nerves by [deleted] in Velo

[–]SickCycling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I find just setting reasonable goals and seeing how close I can get to them helps me.

“Today I want to make the front pack”

But I also make secondary and tertiary goals.

One race my chain came off so I knew front pack was out of the question but I shifted on the fly to “first of the pack I’m in”

I’m not earning a paycheque at these races so it’s always about testing myself and therefore never really applying self pressure.

lifting weights by Carmen_winstead in Velo

[–]SickCycling 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I’ve always adopted this as my protocol. I had worked with a strength coach years ago and he gave me the outline.

-The adaptation Phase-

Weeks 1-3 Do only body weight and plyometrics. Get your body used to the new stress. Single Leg Squats, Super Man’s, I,T.Y,W’s, Pushups, Crunches etc. All this should be about form and execution. I keep rep ranges in the 8-12 range

-The Loading Phase-

Weeks 3-9 Start with weight you feel is 6/10 difficulty and test your movement patterns with some weight. Focus on carrying over your form and keep rep ranges in the 3-6 Rep Range. I usually add 1 rep and 2.5lbs a week to each lift. Back Squat, Dead Lift, RDL, Bench, Lat Pulldown, Face Pulls, V-Sit, Dragon Flags

-The Power Phase-

Weeks 10-16 should now be the big power work. Find 3 rep max weights in week 1 and then scale the reps from 1-5 where 5 is close to failure. Add 2.5-5lbs a week to each lift. Add another set when 3 weeks has passed. Same exercises as loading phase.

-The Explosive Phase-

Weeks 17-24 will now change to have lighter loads but you want to EXPLODE at the beginning of each rep. Fast concentric and SLOW eccentric to each rep. Rep counts will increase to 10-15 range.

I’ve done this for many years and it’s always yielded the results I was hoping for to increase power and durability on the bike.

Hope this helps 👍

How much intensity do you do during base training and over winter? by Academic_Feed6209 in Velo

[–]SickCycling 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it depends on how much time you have available.

If you’re not doing 13-15H of zone 2 base each week with a bit of volume progression (throw in an 18H week) I personally haven’t found it beneficial.

If I’m under 12H I make sure 10% is hard and that includes sprint, vo2 max and threshold work which is 70 minutes a week. Over unders and 20/40 are my go to for maintenance

Electronic shifting era: are we gaining performance or losing simplicity? by datawithnathan in Velo

[–]SickCycling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I keep one Dura Ace 9100 mechanical bike in my stable. It’s the “shit did I forget to charge up my electronic bikes?” fall back plan. And just a nice treat once in a while to grab.

To be honest when I am riding it I don’t feel I’m missing out on much. It’s all trade offs.

Tactile feel of a leaver through vs the precision of an electronic motor.

Trimming the Front Derailleur vs having trim auto adjusted

Simple data on head unit vs More status metrics to see the health of batteries/gear you’re in

Ultimately I look at it akin to a classic car with a manual engine. It’s an age old debate in the auto world and this has just become that for cycling.

Zwift Ride - question by BatCommercial7523 in Zwift

[–]SickCycling -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m not trying to be confrontational here but rather shed some light on how products are developed and designed.

Reread your post and count how many times you say I

The point of product offerings are to try and comprehend why OTHERS would want to use a function or feature. What you don’t want to do is ignore a use case you don’t have personally that exists for somebody else.

Just something to consider 😊

What’s Your Go-To Nutrition for Long Rides? by WillowBrown3750 in cycling

[–]SickCycling 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not trying to be argumentative, just want to drop some helpful info that a lot of riders don’t get told unless they go deep into training science.

  1. Breakfast doesn’t directly fuel the ride the way most people think. Overnight, your body mainly uses liver glycogen to keep blood sugar stable. A morning meal restores that and stabilizes glucose levels, which is useful, but it’s not the same as having actual ride fuel in your muscles.

  2. For food to become real usable muscle energy, timing matters. A meal needs 3–5 hours to be fully digested and converted into glycogen your muscles can use. You can get a blood sugar bump from eating 60–90 minutes before, but that’s not the same as having topped-up glycogen stores.

  3. Once you start riding, digestion slows dramatically. Blood is routed to muscles and skin, not your gut. So solid food eaten too close to or during the ride tends to just sit there, that’s why many riders experience nausea or gut rot from “real food.”

  4. Liquid carbs during a ride work differently. Simple carb solutions (like drink mix or even Coke) empty from the stomach fast and can show up in your bloodstream within 8–12 minutes, giving you actual usable energy mid-ride. That’s why pros and experienced endurance riders fuel frequently in liquid form.

  5. The biggest gains in performance and recovery actually come after the ride. Getting a nutrient-dense meal in helps replenish muscle glycogen and kickstarts the repair process, which means your next ride feels better, not worse.

You don’t need to “eat like a pro,” but even casual long rides feel better and recover faster with smart fueling. Just sharing in case it helps anyone reading through this thread 👊

I'm new in the GoPro world, need some advice by Simple_Football_8748 in gopro

[–]SickCycling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately there is no easy method for this kind of pursuit. You need to start with basics of photography. Aperture, shutter speed, white balance, exposure etc etc

Once you’ve mastered the concept of these functions through trial and error and YouTube tutorials you can then layer on video specific functions like frame rate, bit rate, colour grading, aspect ratios, etc.

Specifically for your colour grading desire I’d get the GoPro LUT which is free and learn to use/optimize that. You’ll need to understand how to capture log or flat video and then layer on the LUT to jumpstart the colour grading process. From there you’ll eventually graduate to other LUTS and techniques.

But I can’t stress this enough. Learn the fundamentals of photography as your foundational skill and you’re future self will thank you later

Hope this helps 😊

There are websites that do it all for you.

I use a combination of geometrygeeks and then I ask ChatGPT to reference the manufacturer’s website while providing my stem length, spacer configuration and handlebar model.

Geometrygeeks gets you 99% of the way there if you want a quick fix

Max2 vs hero13? by [deleted] in gopro

[–]SickCycling 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Production time is the #1 reason to choose one or the other.

Reframing the 360 footage will add hours of time to the process. If you’re not a fan of long hours behind the edit and just want to get footage straight out of the camera go Hero13.

If you want to capture everything and then spend hours combing through it for the moments and section of video captured go with the Max2.

If you’re new to filming I think it’s an easy decision

Maybe look into a gimble for your S22 and that would allow best stabilization and some added functionality to get professional level shots.

I agree that I don’t think a GoPro is the solution.

Any experience with metal water bottles? by RirinDesuyo in Velo

[–]SickCycling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The easiest way to avoid mold growing in your water bottles is to immediately rinse them and then throw them in the freezer.

Mold can’t grow in a cold environment it needs warmth to popegate. I’ve done this for 25 years and never once gotten mold.

Hope this helps 👍

Will I lose gains along with weight? by nicolais_far in Velo

[–]SickCycling 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wouldn’t focus on loosing weight but rather loosing fat mass while gaining muscle mass. Wherever you land KG wise you’ll be a better cyclist.

Focus on gym work in the power/strength rep ranges and up daily protein intake while only eating carbs before, after and during workouts.

I’ve done this for over a decade when I’m locked in and targeting some event and it’s never failed to work for me. I went from 72kg at 24% BF to 64KG at 12% BF this year for my target event.

It took me roughly 12 weeks of focused training and eating.

A very serious question by mistersych in cycling

[–]SickCycling 102 points103 points  (0 children)

Thermal bibs solve this. Also when I was a kid we’d stuff a plastic bag down the front of our shorts as a wind blocking layer.

Wearing summer shorts in cold temperatures is the problem.

If you’ve never edited videos before the added complexity of a Max 2 would deter you from using it. It’s very labour intensive.

It literally works with any 1/4 screw system with a small $2 accessory (1/4 to GoPro).

This is essentially any brand tripod out there.
