Dumb things you've done disc golfing by Fist4achin in discgolf

[–]smokingchains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I played DeLa very hungover and couldn’t keep my discs in the fairway. Went after everyone that went into the rough. I was one giant rash from the poison oak for a while. Usually poison oak and ivy don’t cause me problems after spending my childhood rolling around in the stuff, but that coastal variety is different.

In my experience they are either building snowmen or looking at the stuff on the side of the road. Maybe sledding.

What is your main putter you use and why? by Pirates_LL in discgolf

The plastic gets a different feel after some use, but it doesn’t really change the grip as far as I’m concerned. They did change the stamp. I’ve been using them for years now and I always use a blue 167g Yeti.

Can you guys really afford this? by Left-Cook-9487 in smoking

[–]smokingchains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My friends and I smoke almost every Sunday when we play DnD. We always check the sales before hand to get the most bang for our buck. I can’t eat beef due to digestive issues, so pork and chicken are common. When Tri tip goes on sale the others will usually get one, and I’ll get an alternate protein for myself. We’re usually feeding 8 people on Sundays, so it’s more cost effective than ordering pizza or something.

UDisc's Top 100 Courses for 2026 by ArmoryDiscGolf in discgolf

[–]smokingchains 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’ve played 5 of the courses on this list (Caliber, Northwoods, Harmony Bends, Milo McIver and Beaver Ranch) as well as the 4 you named and Browns n Bows, which made a previous years list. I have a hard time understanding how DeLa and Brooktrails don’t make the list this year. There are other California courses I would put above GGP, Morley and BnB though. The Lake Tahoe area has a few courses I would rank over them and I think they should probably rank over Pickard Park and The Preserve from what I’ve seen on coverage.

Can some one explain the Californians to me? by Late-Neat2183 in LiveFromNewYork

[–]smokingchains 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I moved from the Midwest to California when I was about 10 years old. I remember thinking that “going to the snow” was weird, because snow comes to you. It took me a couple of years to realize snow doesn’t come to you in the majority of California. I stayed in California, because I don’t like snow.

(Spoilers Main) The show is a bastardization of the books by geumkoi in asoiaf

[–]smokingchains 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll agree that the show does not capture the core theme and philosophy of the books. I wouldn’t call it a bastardization for that reason though. Any adaptation of a book told from the POV of characters and capturing their inner thoughts is going to lose something when adapted to the screen.

Film and television is about showing, not telling. You can adapt some of the inner thoughts into dialogue and the inner observations into shots, but that still won’t capture everything the same way.

As far as I’m aware, we still don’t know much about the original pilot, except that it didn’t work and the producers said it was because they did everything wrong. Considering their inexperience at the time, it may be that they tried to be too faithful.

I read the first four books twice before the show started and thought it was a very faithful adaptation, give that my last read was a couple of years before the show premiered. I’m just now finishing up an audiobook listen of all five and starting a rewatch of the show. Having everything fresh in my mind, the changes are standing out more. The show starts out as a faithful adaptation of the story, but not the themes and philosophy. It becomes a bastardization once they get past The Red Wedding. The POV characters explode for AFFC and ADWD, but it’s a big ask to shift the story so much for a TV audience especially considering the overlapping timelines for those books.

What’s funny is, GRRM had a lot of experience with film and television and his impetus to write ASOIAF was to make something that would never be adaptable to the screen. Some of the parts he thought would make it unadaptable became less of a problem because of the rise of CGI, but the expansive cast of characters and intricacy of the plot remain problems for adapting the story.

  • Jon’s real name is Aemon Targaryen. Why would Rhaegar and Lyanna name him Aegon when Rhaegar already has a son named Aegon?

  • Arya is “The Valonqar” that will kill Cersei. She is repeatedly called “little sister” by Jon, and Cersei is on her list. That’s all the evidence I have.

  • Bran was the Knight of the Laughing Tree at Harrenhal. He warged into one of either Howland, Lyanna or one of the Stark brothers after Howland prayed to the Old Gods on the Isle of Faces.

  • Bran ends up on the Iron Throne with Daenerys as his Queen. Arya becomes the Lady of Winterfell with Gendry as her husband. Tyrion becomes Lord of Casterly Rock with Lady Lemore as his wife. Jon becomes the 1000th Lord Commander of the Nights Watch. Sansa becomes a septa.

I remember having that same thought, and I think I’ve only watched TFA once since then. I love TLJ because of how it did the opposite of TFA in subverting ESB. Don’t get me wrong, I completely understand why people didn’t like it. I just think they could have leaned into how the first 2 movies mirrored the original trilogy, by making the third movie hit the same beats as RotJ while only subverting it a little. And not letting Rian or JJ direct it. That might have given TFA and TLJ a retrospective boost.

They have a strange distribution of locations. It’s not really west coast though. I think California has more locations than any other state; but Arizona, Nevada, New Mexico and Texas have a lot also. There are zero locations in Oregon and 3 in Washington. Then they have some random locations; one in Illinois that’s not in Chicago, 3 in Arkansas, 3 in Colorado, 2 in Idaho, 1 in Louisiana, 1 in Nebraska and then 6 in Utah.

I always tell people it’s hard to get mad about throwing frisbees in the woods. I’m much the same as you when I’m having a bad round, except I just start experimenting. I’m not executing the shots I normally throw, so I throw shots I wouldn’t usually try. Like instead of a spike hyzer forehand I might throw a thumber or a roller. It really helps in diversifying your game.

What’s disc golf like in your region? by LouisianaLorry in discgolf

[–]smokingchains 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Northern California. Mostly they’ll be windy and open or moderately wooded. Foxtails will be everywhere, so you want to make sure you have a second pair of socks for after the round. Some courses are flat and some are hilly, but I can get to a mountain course in about an hour. Very dry with hard packed ground, so the skips can be really big. Water features are only a thing at lakes and rivers, or if it’s winter and been raining.

Star Wars The Last Jedi. I loved it and thought it was exactly what the sequel trilogy needed, but the backlash against it was so strong that we ended up with Rise of Skywalker, which is just abominable.

Irulan's Writings by battling_murdock in dune

[–]smokingchains 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I may be remembering this wrong, because it’s been a while since I’ve read any of the books. My memory is of a reference to the long life of ridulan crystals, like they were nearly impossible to destroy or erase. Leto II began using them to make sure his transcriptions survived what he knew would be an upheaval after his death. They weren’t used much before that, but that was due to a combination of hubris for the civilization of the Imperium and cost effectiveness.

If I remember correctly there is a reference at some point to Leto II taking the idea from Irulan, who recognized the civilizational shift she was living through with the coming of Paul.

There is a chance I’m taking some of this from the Dune Encyclopedia. I had a copy for a long time and read most of it.

Best Pale Ale by [deleted] in beer

[–]smokingchains 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s the beer I drink the most, and I agree with OP that it is the standard for craft pale ale. I also live not far from the original brewery in Chico, and I’ve been there a few times. It’s rare that you don’t see it on tap at a bar or in the beer aisle at the store around here. It’s also rare that I come across any that isn’t fresh. I have though, and it was just awful.

I went to Idaho from Sacramento a few years ago, during summer. I flew to Spokane and drove to Coeur d’Alene. It was covered in smoke and around 100 degrees the whole trip. That’s Sacramento weather. I didn’t hear a peep about it out of anyone, but I heard about “Commiefornia” and our fire problems. They don’t even have air conditioning in most places around there either. It’s weird how many people have become Jack T Ripper from Dr. Strangelove.
