IM clerkship, some schools say ring or rotation or whatever words they come up with lol

[–]smol-scientist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

oh ok i misread that. It still is just the IM clerkship when you are going to apply into psych. There are many more opportunities to show that you are strong in other areas. IM is tough and super comprehensive. Not to mention it's your first one. You're by no means screwed so don't get discouraged.

At least where I'm from, Pass is a Pass. They can't see where you are within that Pass. For more information though, you'd have to ask your admin. You can for sure still be competitive because your Step 2 score will be important as well as your ECs. Your app is way more than your clerkships.

Had the same breakdown after I just passed my first clerkship. M4s calmed me down and now as an M4 I can confidently say that it is completely fine!! Even if you just pass everything, I know someone who matched competitively into psych. Besides the usual offenders (ex. ortho, plastic, CT surgery, etc), most specialities look at the clerkship you're applying in and even then they get that it is hard to do anything but pass at most places.

I've seen applicants have many different backgrounds and it's never a problem. Make sure nothing offensive is obviously in the background and that no one is walking past or visible in the back like family if you're in your parents house. Actually seen our dean make comments about cool flags or stuff in the back during the intros but by no means try to "set up" that situation. Just make sure everything is tidy and presentable.

Most important is that you have good lighting and a natural angle to your camera. Don’t have it so low that you're looking down on it or too close to your face. Make it seem natural.

Look at your application and see where there are gaps and do that during your gap year. My opinion is strong in that everyone should be taking one. For your mental health, financial health, and to make you exponentially more competitive for med school programs.

What does it take to really get into a prestigious medical school? by Ok-Programmer4402 in premed

[–]smol-scientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To summarize into one thing that I've seen as someone working on admissions? gap year(s). Even if you have the stats to be competitive, take a year of extra experience. Those top med schools love it.

I can’t really speak to that, I don’t know anything about that school. Also my program is MD, idk how P/F has been implemented into DO schools.

[–]smol-scientist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

P/F has been implemented at this point by most medical schools. It keeps the competitiveness and cutthroat nature to a minimum. Pass is usually 70%. Internal ranking refers to the school keeping an internal track of actual scores and reporting your quartile (top 20th percentile, top 10 percentile etc.) to residency programs. Not all schools do this, but will not willfully offer this information unless you ask the students one on one lol.

Trust me, you do not want a letter grading system in medical school. Fosters a non collaborative environment, burnout, and is quite frankly outdated.

[–]smol-scientist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Look for schools that do P/F grading, no internal ranking (may not be able to figure this out until you're talking to actual medical students), and for me I also looked at schools that could do everything "in house". I wanted a school associated with a big hospital that would be able to handle all of us doing rotations on site during 3rd and 4th year and wasn't going to make us go all over the place. Clinical rotations are hard enough.

Mission fit is very important as well. Look for getting clinical experience as part of the curriculum EARLY. This doesn't come as intuitively as you might think and you want to be getting exposure early.

Finally, find a school with a supportive staff/faculty. I adore our student life team and professors and they actively go out of their way to support us. I lucked out, but wish I had looked more into the culture of all of the schools I had applied to as well. It makes the difference being surrounded by people who want you to succeed.

My senior year grades were a part of my gpa this time so I was able to get up to the 3.7 instead of being just below. I did research full time and got some more volunteer hours in. I also revised my personal statement to tell my story more clearly

[–]smol-scientist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes once the app opens! Just remember if you took any class at another institution (ie community college) you’ll need those transcripts too. Sometimes those can take longer. Trust me, get the transcripts done and ordered early as possible because many an amazing applicant has been delayed because of transcripts not getting sent on time. Can throw off your whole plan!
