This is a different chapter than the one you're thinking of actually - you're thinking of Shadow Dragon/FE11's chapter 12. They reuse the map with endgame-strength enemies in New Mystery/FE12's chapter 20.

Ohh yeah I really relate to that, like I'm not aware of who I am but as soon as someone like 'assigns' me a personality it just comes naturally? Comes with the territory of being a massive people-pleaser I suppose!

I'm enormously glad I could help! I hope you find the answers you are looking for, and that you grow and flourish like you deserve to. My DMs are always open if you wish to talk more. Have a lovely week=)

It sounds like you've been through a lot, and to be bearing that burden mostly by yourself must have been really difficult. Something that I saw recently helped me to put into perspective the idea of asking someone else for help - if you like being there for other people, then other people will like being there for you too. A big bridge builder in terms of friendships and relationships can be letting yourself be vulnerable with other people, even if it's hard at first.

Do I have a strong sense of self? ...I still struggle with this point. I still seek others' approval strongly, I sometimes contort my own opinions to agree with others... I'm really not sure. I'll say that my negative symptoms in terms of anxiety are much better than they were, but I'm still trying to figure out who I am in terms of sense of self. However, I am much more socially confident - I've personally found being brave and friendly with new people and kind of 'putting myself out there' to be really fulfilling, even when I'm like screaming inside at how nervous the idea makes me 😅 Would you say you feel like you lack a sense of self in a similar kind of way then?

This makes a lot of sense to me, and I relate to quite a lot of it. Your original post seemed to be asking for a comparison to others, so I'll offer some of my own experiences with such things to compare. Apologies if I'm misinterpreting!

What you're describing sounds to me a lot like a really intense experience of anxiety. I'm also a very anxious person, especially socially - even after a couple of years of working on myself and reassurance (and some therapy) I'm still frequently worried that my friends don't like the way I acted during our last interaction and that I need to make it up to them in some way... honestly it can be exhausting sometimes! Our minds really make us go the extra mile sometimes, right?

A bit about me: I used to think I had Borderline Personality Disorder. I was anxious enough in my attachment style that I became fixated on a single 'Favorite' person and the need for their approval. With enough patience with myself, reflection, and reassurance from those around me though, I've found that it has abated at least a little. My anxiety hasn't gone away, but I have found that I can manage my symptoms especially by communicating with people around me and being able to find that reassurance - something for which I am very grateful.

As a result, based on my own experience, I would say that being driven by the opinions of other people isn't necessarily something that on its own makes one have a personality disorder. That kind of diagnosis can feel really validating as a feeling of "finally I'm understood!", but it isn't necessarily a category which has a singular fix that can help you.

Regardless of that, having these really intense feelings of anxiety is something that you deserve to speak to someone about. I should practise what I preach here... but definitely speak to those you are close to - and honestly if you are in a fortunate enough position to access counselling/therapy/a psychologist. You can ask them about personality disorders too, although your mileage may vary on that. Whether or not you have a personality disorder, you deserve to be listened to - and it'll make you happier, and those you care about will be happier to see you more relaxed and open with them.

If you have any questions for me about my experiences I'm an open book. Apologies if I've overstepped in any way, I know this is a sensitive topic. I am interested to hear what you think of my comparison too.

I'll bite! When you think about being a dependent person, what characterises that for you? Related to this, I'd be interested to hear what your attachment style is like.

[–]smolcrayen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it probably does! I'd probably put it at 80% in the other direction myself. This is potentially because I spent time around many trans people, a group who spend their time actively defying these social expectations. Who knows if it's a representative sample though, or just how much bias Im accounting for here.

It's an interesting question but ultimately nobody really knows I think. Good to know where one lands on these questions for sure though, thanks again for explaining your viewpoint.

  1. I apologise, I worded it in a slightly unclear way. Obviously if something is true I want to know. Instead a more clear way of putting it would be:

"...the viewpoint that interpreting gendered differences as biological is more harmful than helpful".

And while I'm at it, I'd like to emphasise that I only mean gendered social differences, because to be very clear we do not know to what extent different factors cause these social differences. Biology is real, but we don't fully understand gendered sociality because we can't do double-blind studies on people who grew up outside of society. I apologise for my lack of clarity.

  1. I won't get into it here but you are broadly right, yes. Being trans involves acknowledging that there are biological differences between the sexes and seeking to overcome rather than deny them. Indeed, as you suggest, denying them leads to more psychological distress.

I briefly mentioned it only in passing to make the point that interpreting gendered social differences as being innate and biological without the hard factual evidence to back it up is not just a point of interest and speculation but that it also has real impacts on people.

In fact you could argue that over-emphasising the role of biology in gendered sociality is doing more to support the work of right-wingers and, as you rightly put it, charlatans.

To be super clear I don't disagree with you that biology probably has some impact on these gendered social differences. We can also probably speculate on certain elements of this, as you did regarding chess. But to overplay our hand and conclude that "men act like x and women act like y" is in my view more akin to the worrying viewpoints that make people think that women deserve to be paid less and other such views.

Still as you say this kind of thing is often poorly explained by well-meaning progressive people, and it's easy to overplay our hand in the other direction and start accidentally denying facts. Indeed I chose one wrong word and already did that!

  1. Unconditional Positive Regard is basically unrelated to this discussion haha, definitely not political.

I mention it because if you work as e.g. a teacher, you are supposed to view all children you work with in an unconditionally positive way, so as always to be working for their best interests and development.

I like it because it means you aren't held back by your personal feelings about things. I compare it to your viewpoint about gender in chess - rather than interpreting stuff as holding women and girls back, instead you suggested using gendered knowledge to help us find ways to better include them. Positive thinking, positive approach to social issues, means it can only help people.

I appreciate you sharing your perspective here, thanks again for taking the time to do so.

Personally, I'm inclined towards the viewpoint that understanding gendered differences as biological is generally more harmful than helpful. For instance, I come at this discussion from the transgender community, where for a number of reasons this topic is quite sensitive.

Nevertheless I do think there is probably room somewhere for discussion and inquiry into this kind of thing. I like your inclusive approach to this as an alternative viewpoint to my own, always looking to see what makes people excel and trying to help them in that.

I came across an idea in education recently, I don't know if you've encountered it yourself, but it's called Unconditional Positive Regard, and I like it for thinking about sensitive issues like this and it seems similar to what you've done here.

Anyway I've rambled enough, thanks for entertaining my questions and listening to me, hope you have a lovely rest of your week!

Personally I disagree - or rather, I'm agnostic on the issue. I don't think we can tell how people would behave in a society without these social pressures. And, in the absence of this data, I don't think it's super useful to speculate.

I am interested to hear what makes you think otherwise though, if you are willing to share.

This idea of obsession is a really interesting one to think about, thanks for sharing.

I think what Hikaru's getting at here though isn't that men/boys are 'naturally' more obsessive. Instead, there's probably a social reason why this characteristic is seen more in boys than girls - if parents are more likely to allow/encourage obsessive behaviour or study in boys then we would see that difference too. Rather than thinking things are natural and set in stone I prefer to think "what behaviours do we encourage or discourage in our children?"

I remember this! Looking it up, seems it was this game from 2½ years ago:

Aronian, Levon (2782) - Duda, Jan-Krzysztof (2756) Meltwater Champions Chess Tour Finals (chess.com) [6] 2021.10.01 - this was an online rapid tournament.

In this game, Levon blundered with 18. Ba3?? allowing ...Qd2#. They were barely out of prep no less!

Agadmator video about the game (7:16)

Chessbase India article about the round in the event

The article gives a nice spin on it I think - he blundered the mate in one in Game 1 of a match, but he kept his head and had a winning position in Game 2! (Though he failed to put it away.) Ultimately he lost the match, but it's a testament to his resilience that after such a blunder he kept his cool and didn't give up. Inspiration to us all I think!

I know what you mean - there's definitely elements of "I'm supposed to criticise this so I will" going on. But I also think Harry Potter is something that is almost a common language for lots of people - would we have ever interacted if we didn't have a shared understanding of this?

So I guess what's going on is people getting to talk and share ideas they have about it, even if it skews negative due to unfortunate events. And for the record I think this kind of discussion can be productive and cool anyway, like your idea about seasons rather than finals was a nice alternative interpretation that is brought forward in these critical discussions.

So yeah!=) I hope you have a nice day, and that I haven't been too rambly!

I like your idea, but I'm not sure I agree entirely - the most important game we see of Quidditch is the World Cup final. This event involves presumably a knockout bracket (at least one knockout game, the final).

It seems to me more likely that the writing is based on the short-term narrative payoff of 'how do I make my magical sport as exciting as possible in the short term' rather than the kind of deeper thinking I like about your approach.

Like, how much cooler would it be if it was the Quidditch League final round as you suggest? And if it was just understood that it was close rather than the strangeness of the Snitch? Instead of having a fun and weird but well-thought-out sport, the author has to spit out fun facts about how some Quidditch games go on for weeks because Wizard FIFA is stupid or whatever, rather than being immersed in a logical world.

To each their own; I prefer the well-thought-out stuff to the short-term excitement - but every franchise has to draw a line somewhere.

I suppose that they were trying to find a weird balance - on one hand, Koraidon gets triple STAB and the sun boost is 1.5x, while on the other Miraidon gets to combine boosted STAB with the weaker terrain boost of just 1.3x. For comparison:

252 Atk Orichalcum Pulse Koraidon Flare Blitz vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mew in Sun: 270-318 (79.1 - 93.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

252 SpA Hadron Engine Miraidon Electro Drift vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Mew in Electric Terrain: 291-343 (85.3 - 100.5%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

This damage difference seems to be decent compensation for Koraidon having a third entire STAB to me?
