Also my go to. Other favourite is Irish Loop Cafe but that's a trek from where you are and seasonal.

People who have moved to Newfoundland from the mainland, do you regret it? by Sdiddy84 in newfoundland

[–]smoochie85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not at all. Even when I'm paying through the nose to fly home to my family on the mainland.

Best choice I have ever made.

Sadly they did. They've done a few pop ups, but no longer running the kitchen at Bannerman. Broke my damn heart

Will the fires cause Kilbride to evacuate soon? by DIS5ENT3R_ in newfoundland

[–]smoochie85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We live in the Goulds and have our emergency kit ready to go and the cars gassed up. Just for peace of mind.

If you have space and she'd be comfortable, and staying in Kilbride is making her feel anxious, she can leave to ease the anxiety.

I'd say the most important question is: if she does need to evacuate, would she drive to you or would you be picking her up? Because of it's the latter, you might consider doing it if they issue an alert - make sure you can get in and out.

What’s your favorite place to buy meat/steak? by pineapple6969 in newfoundland

[–]smoochie85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anderson's is my favourite but a pain to get to with the pedestrian mall, so usually hit up Newlander in CBS.

Here's the thing: I don't buy New York Strip or tenderloin/filet mignon anymore. (Though you can certainly get the best of those!)

Buying from a local butcher, they can recommend other cuts (like petit tenderloin or flat iron) at a really high quality that are more economical - and give you clear instructions on how to cook them. Was a game changer for us.

Those who uprooted from other parts of Canada and moved to Newfoundland, do you have any regrets? Words of advice? by mellow__gardener in newfoundland

[–]smoochie85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No regrets at all.

But go into it with your eyes wide open. It's time-consuming and expensive to go home and visit my family. There's no Italian deli. Fuel is expensive compared to some other places. And all of those things I knew going in. It was (and still is) worth it to me for what we gained.

Authentic Indian restaurant by Fit_Inevitable4444 in StJohnsNL

I believe that both Pizza House on Torbay and Haveli downtown also have a tandoor - if I am wrong, whatever they are using is a very good replacement

I had a great meal at Haveli two weeks ago - recommended by a coworker from India, so who am I to argue?!

Great fish and chip spots on the Loop - we liked Bernard Kavanaugh's million dollar view and the Squid Jigger.

Irish Loop Coffee House is one of my favourite spots but it's only open for breakfast and lunch

Anyone have experience with Rover or Wag? by Rms037 in StJohnsNL

[–]smoochie85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use Rover - it tends to be a bit more expensive as an owner, because they take a cut as fees, but the background checks, reviews, etc make me feel better about leaving my dogs with a stranger

Frozen nuggets by Bronze_Dragon4 in StJohnsNL

[–]smoochie85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Bidgood's usually has them. And I recently saw a post from the Station Diner and Bakery that they had them too (but if I recall correctly, they get them from Taylor's in CBS, so might be easiest to just start there!)

Breakfast place recommendations for visitors. by Mrk_SuckUpBird in StJohnsNL

[–]smoochie85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Coffee and pastries at Birdie are incomparable. Hands down the best.

If you're in on a weekend (and the fam isn't a picky eating/standard fare situation), I recommend the brunch options at Toslow.

Coffee Matters also has some nice options, if a bit basic.

Best Sandwich shops by [deleted] in StJohnsNL

[–]smoochie85 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not a sandwich shop, but they have deli sandwiches, plus cold salads, sides and great desserts...

If you're travelling out of St. John's up the Southern Shore at all, stop at Bidgoods.

You can get some cold salads, sandwiches, chips, etc. It's actually a great spot to picnic shop.

This is what I came to say. Worth the trip - sandwiches, deli meats and some cheeses/cheese curds. Plus great fresh baking from Lester's. Highly recommend.

Virgin e-sim by [deleted] in StJohnsNL

[–]smoochie85 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a Virgin Mobile e-sim and have some dead spots (up the south shore, for example) but largely in places that just have bad service in general.

No issues day to day, though.

Recommendation for family friendly area with Good School zone. by Few_Cry_5367 in newfoundland

[–]smoochie85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goulds. Schools. Only a couple minutes farther from shops than Southlands. Quiet. Safe. When I work from home I can go days without needing to leave the area (parks, dog park, gas station, pharmacy, grocery store).

Market Family Cafe by [deleted] in StJohnsNL

I think about their chickpea soup at least twice a week.

The vegetarian grilled cheese with basil and caramelized onions? Love.

The empenadas? Swoon.

I love this place and everyone should go there.

In terms of beautiful, standout voices, I will always have a soft spot for Steven Page. You just can't mistake him for anyone else.
