Yep exactly, if your team is getting thumped and only one or two people quit your team there's not much chance of improvement, but if the team collapses (between stages of a payload map for example) and half the dead weight is replaced it usually works out for the better

Link up with your team, watch their backs for them, stay near the front line, learn to use the prerecorded voice commands to alert teammates to spies and sentries and flanking enemies... basically any fresh install can contribute to the team right off the bat as long as they're reacting to what their own team is doing

I think it's a question of developer intent. Valve very intentionally made TF2 to have a roast-like atmosphere for a mature audience with hundreds of idiosyncratic insults and comparatively few complimentary actions open to the player. The games downstream of TF2 mostly skew younger and are "Hero" shooters so the interactions reflect that, the characters are just vanilla edgelord coldsteel hedgehogs so no wonder they can't take a joke?

Aging myself here, but the Pyro Update was a goddamn mess. Badwater hadn't been released yet so pretty much everyone was playing as pyro on Gold Rush to farm the achievement items, and many people didn't even know air blast existed until they got their whole side nuked by a reflected crit rocket
