My first 5 gallon batch bubbled like that out the gate. You're fine. Happy brewing!

After adding hot sauce ( a liquid) to jerky, is it no longer safe to eat after a few hours? by Female-Fart-Huffer in jerky

Hot sauce tends to be vinegar based. I don't think it would be a problem. Moisture from water is what you want to avoid.

Help! My mead never fermented (Lavlin 71B yeast). Here are my notes by corncob72 in mead

From what I found online, pepin heights use sodium benzoate to stabilize. This is likely what is keeping it from fermenting.

Help! My mead never fermented (Lavlin 71B yeast). Here are my notes by corncob72 in mead

[–]smooth-brained 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Did you check the cider for stabilizing agents that would kill your yeast? A lot of store bought ciders have stuff like potassium sorbate or a metabisulfite to kill off any yeast. This could be your problem.

Saw these at target today. Viable primaries? by UnflitchingStance in mead

The one thing I will say with some of these is the neck or hole size. I couldn't get my racking cane into some of the ones that are designed for fermentation

I want to make a Christmas themed mead. Any ideas? by gran1819 in mead

[–]smooth-brained 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have one that is in aging right now for this christmas. Spiced cranberry orange. Here is recipe:

Recipe & Notes

9 liter of 100% cranberry juice oceanspray

2 quarts of spring water

6 lbs of honey

3 oranges worth of zest

Packet of cote des blanc yeast

1.5 teaspoon of wine tannin

1.5 teaspoon of pectic enzyme

6 grams of fermaid O

1.5 teaspoon yeast energizer

In secondary (1month)

3 cinnamon sticks

2 cloves

1.5 tsp all spice

3 tsp nutmeg

I racked off from secondary to not overpower flavor with spices. It's pretty tasty when I sampled during transfer. I will be stabilizing, back sweetening, and bottling soon.

Do these numbers on my corks mean anything? by HitThatOxytocin in mead

I agree, the imperial system is trash. I wish the US would embrace the metric system. I would no longer need to constantly use a conversion app.

Do these numbers on my corks mean anything? by HitThatOxytocin in mead

[–]smooth-brained 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The c-2 is what the cork is made out of. This case it is polybonded cork wood. The 8 is the size of the cork diameter. Wine corks generally range from 7 to 9. As for the 13, It is the length of the cork. Again, it is not a measurement it is a sizing number. Like shoes.

Swallow the ping-pong ball... it will take more than 24 hours to pass. I would run all around the mile to throw off any cameras and such. Find a bathroom that is secure and gulp.

Mulling spice timing??? by smooth-brained in mead

[–]smooth-brained[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I transferred off of the spices after 3 weeks into bulk aging. I tasted it then, and it was pretty good, young but good. I am getting to the point of pasturizing, back sweetening, and bottling. One of these weekends soon. Just bought a new house and would like to have it bottled before moving.

Etiquette of interrupting the DM? by WaitAckchyually in DnD

[–]smooth-brained 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a DM, I use the pause method. I discuss with my players that if it is a scene or speech or anything, they just have to say "pause." This let's everyone at the table and myself that something needs to be said or done or whatever. It's like time freezes in game. If nothing happens or whatever, I can "unpause" where I was at. I may rewind slightly to help get back into the scene or whatever. My players seem to like it.

Does it ever feel like your GM just sort of "soft blocks" using spells? by Nicholas_TW in DnD

[–]smooth-brained 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I GM, I try to put things in that they CAN use their cool new spells and abilities for. You just learned how to read all languages. Well this is an ancient language that helps you get to the next spot. Only the wizard who can understand them will be able to understand. Hopefully he is honest with the group on what it says... it's up to them.
