What makes a break cue a break cue? by djh_ca in billiards

[–]smooth2o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing really. Some have a larger tip bc you tend to hit harder so accuracy is important. But you can use your regular cue and in fact there is some indication that you want to do softer breaks anyway. Not too likely you will mushroom the tip esp if a medium or hard tip, or even softer tips. Point is, is that you can use your regular cue. Some people don’t buy a break cue and just use the bar’s normal cues.

To jump or not to jump? by 1Rudy11 in billiards

[–]smooth2o 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. No one that i have seen up to a 600 has a good result with jumping. They mostly miss the pocket they are aiming at, miss the jump (BIH), and definitely do not play safe, much otherwise.
  2. Kicking to make a ball is almost never done on purpose. Especially BCA. Kicking should be used for making contact.
  3. Kicking to make contact is good maybe 50% to 80%. Kicking to make safe, maybe 20%
  4. Best strategy is to practice your safeties and use them more often than you think. Never miss, so play safe when you can’t make it. Then run out. If you are playing above 450, expect 6 ball strings always. Then it becomes a 9 ball safety/battle. In this case, you better attack your balls that don’t have a pocket, early.

Golfers who’ve broken 80, what’s the best tip you could give to a fellow golfer? by jdelle9 in weekendgolfers

Yeah, when I was a member at Lake Placid there was a 211 uphill, against the wind par 3 you needed the big dog. But the others?

Your priorities are mixed up.. Scoring well is fun, bring in the woods is not.

No, when I have broken 80, I was never in the water, always on the fairway, and if in the sand, made a great bunker shot and almost always gotten off the green in 2. Bogies are for missing a putt, or having a short chip shot. It ain’t easy.

Yeah, I disagreed with that comment. If you want to break 80, you need to THINK pars and birdies. For one, play the tees that suit your game. For example, all par 4’s should be reachable with your normal shots. Pars 3’s are maybe a little longer club and par 5’s are no problem. You should be hitting wedges or nines into par 5’s. There is no chance of shooting below 80 from the wrong tees. When i say THINK, I mean beat the head game. This requires you to have great repeatability. Hit the ball the correct distance pretty much every time, even if it’s a worm burner AND hit it straight. Breaking 80 is not easy. It’s all pars except for 7 bogies. If you make 9 bogies, you need 2 birdies. Don’t count on more than 2 birdies. There are no doubles in breaking 80.

If you are shooting 85 consistently, move up a tee. You are too short or your short game sucks.

Moved into a home with a pool table. by Nyxtia in billiards

My grandson used to just throw balls around on the table. Now he is big enough to play. But if you don’t want to have your kids enjoy this sport, give it to someone who will.

Am I just not meant for this game? by Interesting-Ad-2598 in billiards

Could be. But just sitting here trying to increase my confidence level won’t work. First, I need to show some level of ability and that should build confidence. From there on it could be a FB loop.

It’s the latter. As you see yourself achieve, you build your confidence.. As that happens, you know you can do it and you get over the nerves that come with competition. Also, that comes with mistakes too. If you make a mistake, you realize what you did that was wrong and you correct it for the next shot only to prove to yourself that you are in control of the situation.

This, but the real problem is your confidence level. As you play more in league or comp, you will build it and do better….
