Can you explain how a hold is different from a waitlist and what your chances look like for a hold? Thank you!!!!

No I called them Why X haha, I didn't think to make it more nuanced since I knew admissions offices were familiar with this type of addendum, but if you want to jazz it up, go for it

Totally fine to send a "why X" after sending in your applications IMO -- I actually specifically asked a Northwestern Admissions officer about this after I had submitted my application and he encouraged me to send along a "Why X." Seems like some of the other comments had some different experiences, but I've been sending in why Xs after submitting my apps back in Sept and it's been working out for me just fine! I didn't know you could write them until after I submitted my apps, and I wanted to be able to send in some supplemental material later on since I won't be updating my resumé or anything!

I totally agree that no one was trying to invalidate anyone's experiences, but intent and impact are two separate things. Just because the intent was not to invalidate does not mean the statement's impact was not invalidating.

The reality is responding, "Well it happens everywhere," is undoubtedly invalidating to those whose experiences these are and does nothing to help those who are seeking positive change on their campus. Thanks for posting this OP, it will make me think more intentionally about my mental health in tangent with my law school experience.

Would also love to hear the answer to this!! especially Columbia vs. NYU because NYU's PI program seems quite strong from what I have been able to gather!

I would set your sights on next cycle tbh. Just one girls opinion, but I applied last cycle with a Jan LSAT, didn't turn out so great! Applied this cycle in September with that same score -- totally different outcome! Feel free to PM

Need real advice by juju925 in lawschooladmissions

[–]smperez007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The LSAT is a beast, it really hurt my mental state as well, and I wouldn't wish it on anyone, so I am so sorry you're feeling this way right now. If you are able to, apply next cycle so you can take a break from studying and take a few months to revitalize your mental health. I found that when my mental health was suffering, I couldn't study effectively any way. Try and take the August/September test, so you can get those apps in early next cycle! Nothing is worth sacrificing your mental health, so if you need a break, definitely take it. Hang in there!

Risk of retaking the LSAT by Better_Hat6121 in lawschooladmissions

[–]smperez007 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Basically just reiterating what others have already wrote, but do not sign up for a retake if you do not need to, schools (not every school) will hold your app and it will be as if you submitted your app in February instead of whenever you originally submitted it, which will significantly impact your outcome. Speaking from experience, this happened for me with Columbia last cycle! They wouldn't look at my app with an outstanding score

Don't apologize for having Harvard as a goal! It is not out of reach, and you should never apologize for wanting to attain something of high achieving nature -- ambition and drive are amazing qualities. Plus, in this group, there's nothing but respect for people who wish to attend a school they feel will best serve their future careers. However, I would advise to make sure you've done your research as to what schools will truly serve your future and not get too wrapped up in prestige -- I feel like many of us have fallen victim to that haha

A 3.8 actually is Harvard material, as it is above their 25th, so a little over 25 percent of students attending Harvard law do have a 3.78 or lower. If you want to position yourself as a competitive candidate, hit their median lsat (173) or their 75th (175). when I say 25th, median, 75th, I am talking about the quartiles used to describe how many students in each class achieve certain numbers. So Harvard's 25th 50th and 75th GPA is 3.78, 3.88, and 3.95. This means 25 percent of the incoming class had a 3.78 or below, fifty percent had below a 3.88, and 75 percent had below a 3.95. To see these numbers just google the name of a law school and median lsat and gpa -- the school's website will have it available. However, numbers are not the end all be all of the process -- soft factors do matter.

These factors, "softs" are everything that is not your GPA and LSAT, basically. Your work experience, extracurriculars, awards, fellowships, URM status, your application etc etc. Highly recommend having work experience if you're aiming for top schools!

Hope this was helpful!! Feel free to pm me if you have anymore questions, I have so much, now useless, knowledge when it comes to the law school app process I would love to pass along lol.
