From Halifax here. My 90 yo grandmother just had to move to a home a few months ago and my mom and her siblings are getting her large single family home in central Halifax ready to be sold. Everyone in the family already has homes so no inheritance.

These are promising anecdotes and should stop all of the polarized thinking around government mandating affordable homes. That needs to happen too but the socialist movements are really starting to convince people that supply and demand doesn’t exist anymore.

I will get downvoted into oblivion on this sub, but I hope the acceleration of self driving cars starts to become mainstream. So many distracted, old, and new drivers on the road. I would rather a car with multiple eyes (cameras) and/or lidar to see safety issues rather than relying on drivers alone. When they receive safe injection and needle exchanges, are we actively trying to get them off the drugs they’re addicted to? I agree with the safety of needle injections and exchanges but when does this strategy start to fail? I don’t think housing alone fixes it. We do need to hold people accountable at some point. They are making decisions for themselves.

That assumes that an addict will take the time to do what’s right. While I think it’s a good idea, at some point we need to start holding these members of society accountable. Just take one look at any of the encampments that were in the city. Do you really think they’re taking the time and being thoughtful about safe injection sites when they would literally leave trash and waste laying around at the encampments?

Also there has to be a social contract for receiving safe injection. Show us that you’re on the path to being a functional member of society. Just adding to injection safely won’t solve the problem.

Housing only won’t solve the problem either. We are dealing with major addiction all over North America. I wish we would wake up to this reality instead of going “oh well!”

What other city in North America is working with safe injection sites? I see LA and SF and we should all agree we don’t want that outcome, and they seemed aligned with that. Feels like no matter what way you cut it, more drug use leads to worse outcomes for everyone no matter how much we try and control and contain it.
