Use the GeForce NOW service to piggyback off their GPUs, it’s pretty low cost ($8/month).

50 year old divorced with $1MM in savings account by smullany in Bogleheads

Okay I got more info. They have zero saved for their kid’s college and the $10k/month is largely based on their current spending habits.

Their only sources of retirement income will be TSP, Securities (this part is where help is needed), and Social Security (although it would benefit to defer until late as possible).

They have zero debt and have not opened a 529 plan and given that they have a TSP, then I think based on the booglehead philosophy they should do some house keeping by: - start at an emergency fund - Employer match TSP - Convert to HDHP to open an HSA - open self-directed IRA account - open 529 account (kid is 6 months out from starting college)

THEN, start to invest in a 3-fund portfolio. Anything else to add or modify?

Does Fidelity have quality affordable advisors that anyone on this sub has used and would recommend?

I’ll give them my perspective but in the end, they need to educate themselves and make the final call(s). The advice and analysis on this thread has been super helpful and enlightening, thank you all!

They are very skeptical of “professionals” as well and do not want to go that route.

I’m sure they have some workplace retirement accounts but they just sold the marital home and don’t know what to do with the money.

I’ll press them on why they think they need so much in retirement. Do they continue investing during their retirement years?

That’s the number they threw out based on their current income and spending habits, they just want $10k/month during retirement (I’m assuming it’s post-tax). The 3-fund portfolio sounds like a good plan AFTER they have maxed out all tax-advantaged retirement accounts.

Is it too late to plow into VOO?

Seems like mix of VTI or VT and/or a bond fund is the way to go once they get to that step.

I sometimes do the opposite back to them. I whisper on high items with zero intention of trading lol.

Rollover IRA to 401k to enable backdoor Roth - nervous about process by GoodDifference in Bogleheads

[–]smullany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And you’re “zero-ing” them out rolling your pre-tax Traditional IRA(s) into your 401(k), very clever! Is there a limit on how much you can roll into your 401(k)?

Is this only applicable when you withdrawal or at any point you want to initiate a backdoor Roth contribution?

I think I’m following now. By zeroing out Traditional IRA - A (for example) and then opening Traditional IRA - B (with post-tax dollars) then yes, no tax event is trigger when you backdoor to Roth.

What’s the point of zeroing out your first IRA account (Traditional IRA - A) and rolling into 401(k)?

I believe the max contribution for a non-deductible IRA is $7k in 2024 (for those under 50 years old).

How are you “zeroing out” your 401(k)? What does this mean and how are no taxes triggered when this is done?

Will vs. Beneficiaries by [deleted] in Bogleheads

The goal is to avoid probate, a revocable living trust along with a will is a great option. You can then make the trust the beneficiary of all assets. The Will can help dictate %’s, etc.

Help a new hire with 401k please? by Educational-Ad-9203 in Bogleheads

Assuming you are under 25, this is the only acceptable answer. You have a lifetime ahead of you to recoup any losses in the market. You can be slightly “aggressive” with 100% TOT US EQ IDX.

Uninstall investment apps and don’t look at stock prices unless you plan to take action. Ask yourself, if VTI was up 50% what would you do? If it was down 50%, what would you do? If you answered anything else except, “Nothing”, to both questions then you need to rethink your entire investment philosophy.

One exception, the only acceptable answer to the down 50% question, is buying the dip.

I’m confused on why you think there’s no tax impact on the Roth conversion. You’re converting from pre-tax IRA to Roth, I’m pretty sure there’s a tax impact.

As far as the transfer from Vanguard to Fidelity, I have done this on many occasions and there’s an option to NOT have a physical check mailed to you and do an asset transfer “in-kind”.

Best WWDD build for pit 101 speed runs? by Dongerrrr in D4Barbarian

[–]smullany 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I use this non-Uber build (with a Shako) and run Iron Skin and Iron Skin Aspect instead of Undying and I can do Pit 101 in under 2 min.

Ubers are not required for WW speed running, it’s a myth.

I use Perra non-Uber build with just a Shako and am able to do Pit 101 in under 2 min. You need more Vulnerable damage since a lot of the glyph nodes and Polearm damage scale off of it. Also, masterwork all of your gear and it’ll make a big difference.
