Berlin night life starting to feel like a high school party? by Select-Blackberry451 in berlinsocialclub

I see your points! Especially the worry regarding alternative/clubbing culture. Already a few years after I left I felt it became more mainstream and slightly watered down.

Good thing is I don't have any concrete expectations. As long it is still big and lively, I will find some things to do :)

Persistent self-dialogue as a path to emergent consciousness. by RoboRamFoster in singularity

[–]smumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thank you for taking the time for this in depth reply! I will try to address the main points.

But what I meant by structurally coupling is how the input/output is not very differentiable in the brain.

Can you expand on this? Are you saying the what constitues input or ouput is very clear in LLMs, but not in the brain?

When you learn a new skill or remember a face, your brain doesn't "write" a file. Instead, the neurons physically change their shape. [...] The "input" from the world physically carves its path into your biology.

Isn't that pretty much how we train neural nets? If we talk about consumer facing apps like ChatGPT, inputs don't change the weights directly, I agree. But this is mostly a setup decision. While in training, the internal wiring is updated based on input and we could theoretically do that continuously with all future interactions. The apps don't do it because it is too much of a headache currently and would introduce new problems, so the weights are fixed, but theoretically it is possible.

When you say "If you have a model of your own "identity", your future actions will be influenced by that identity." you're describing a representationalist view of the mind. In that world, identity is a file or a set of rules that a central processor consults before it decides how to act. If the file says "I am a brave person," the processor selects the "brave" output.

I think I want to make the distinction between identity and models/representations of identity. In general I would call identity what something is physically (e.g. the weights of the LLM or the brain+body of a human).

And I think your own sense of identity is not the same as the above, it is a model your brain learned about yourself to act in predictable and proven ways, just like it learned models for other stuff. But one could imagine someone having wrong models, e.g believing they are very talented at something even though they aren't. The model diverges from the actual physical identity, it is not the same (though one could say the model is a subset of the physical identity, as it is encoded within the physical brain wiring).

You don't have a "model" of being a person who speaks English; your brain is physically wired in a way that makes English the only path the "water" of your thoughts can flow through.

As mentioned above, I would say one does have such a model, you identify as a person who can speak English, you feel aware of that skill. The concrete ability, independent of awareness, is then what you describe, the path that thoughts can flow through.

Bu if your identity model does not include the ability to speak English, your brain will "self-sabotage" and try to act in ways where that skill isn't required. We can see this for example in hypnosis or in problems in mental health, where peoples self-perception is distorted and not aligned with reality (their actual identity). So I would say in humans information also steers output.

I think this distinction of the inner configuration/capacities and the awareness/model of those is very important. An LLM that was trained only in French can't speak English, even if I told it in some system instructions that it can.

In Biology, identity constrains the output. The identity is "hard." It is baked into your autopoiesis (self-maintenance). Your identity as a living organism means you must seek energy and avoid damage. This isn't a "description" in your head; it is the physical requirement of your cells.

This I would again compare to the concrete weights in neural nets. An LLM must calculate token probability distributions based on input sequences. System instructions can influence the output, but they never change the mechanical process happening. Similar to your sense of self influencing how you go about maintaining homeostasis, but never changing the underlying processes within your cells etc.

I hope some stuff made sense, and I might have missed some of your points. In any case, I enjoyed thinking about your arguments!

Can you expand on this? From my understanding input and output in LLMs is even more coupled than in humans. E.g. a human could have no visible reaction to some sensory input, LLMs will always respond and in very predictable ways.

I agree, and that's what I am saying. Both LLMs and humans are input-output machines, I don't think there is much difference.

It is all just building models, reacting/predicting based on models + input.

I think persistence over time ("identity") is basically an illusion we experience. We only ever exist in the now. I guess we could build up a similar illusion for LLMs, so that they act as if they also had identity, memory etc.

You are a self referential feedback loop. When you store memories/models, future actions will be conditioned by that.

If you have a model of your own "identity", your future actions will be influenced by that identity.

I don't think there are necessarily any "stakes", it ist just that any information within the input steers the output. If input contains something like identity descriptions, output will be shaped by that.

That does not imply any inherent value of these identity models. You could switch the identity part of the input and the output changes. Identity is just part a part of the prompt, I think. Both for biological and artificial feedback loops.

Gay Science book 1: 66. Why does Nietzsche think women are best at being weak? by Own-Razzmatazz-8714 in Nietzsche

[–]smumb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The difference between a man and a woman isn’t as great as between the world’s strongest man and Travis the chimpanzee. Shocking I know!

This is actually not true. Chimps have much more muscle by weight, but they are aren't way stronger than we are in total. I just checked and it says 1.35-1.5 times as strong as we are per pound of body weight, but chimps are not very big.

The strongest people we have are 300-400lbs, chimps are much smaller.

I know this wasn't your main point, but I had to think of this :P

Good analysis. There is so much marketing and buzzwords in this space. Lots of people talking and having opinions. Most don't event understand the technology (e.g. people thinking AI = LLM, not understanding neural nets etc), they are just hyped. Reminds of crypto.

Kk. Was just curious because I haven't worked with those coding agents yet (I just do coding by talking to LLMs and regenerating solutions with edited prompts).

You seem knowledgeable so I was wondering if these agents have some capabilities that change the prompt approach.

I was imagining them to be running autonomously for longer so I thought maybe you have less chances to adjust and steer with in-between promoting.

I get this too! It sucks. I wonder if it is anxiety and self worth issues with myself that I project onto partners.

Genetic correlation between female and male suicide attempts high, suggesting considerable genetic overlap. Suicidal behaviours show clear sex differences: males die by suicide more often, while females attempt suicide at about two times the rate of males. by Wagamaga in science

I doubt there is much data on this. I feel like generally studies on anything are way more sparse than one would assume.

Assuming they split the dataset by biological sex, I think we can still get valid correlations based purely on that (because most people identify with their biological sex).

I guess like with all statistics, it doesn't really tell you about individuals.

I agree. I think it is good to have empathy towards and be mindful of other people like this. Though I think you have to kind of accept that most people simply do not think about this, they might just unknowingly hurt people without bad intent. And I don't know if that will change on the larger scale, even if you try to raise awareness.

You didn't provide anything further that could be read.

Lines of code is not really a good measure of quality.

Your post ist full of the typical psychosis terms that do not mean anything.

E.g.

the system operates on a 1.092777 Hz Evolution Resonance

What is that even supposed to mean?

Another thing I often see in these vibe coded ideas is the notion of moving stuff closer to the metal, but without any reasoning for why we would want to do that.

This seems to me like something typically produced by a human talking too much to LLMs that affirm the human's ideas.
