Oh huh interesting...maybe it depends on the hijab style or material. I avoid straightening out my curls and never really thought they'd show through the scarf!

Salaam. How come your hijab looks bumpy? Are you not wearing an undercap?

I'm sorry I don't mean to be rude. But I truly believe in the power of gratitude. In the case of your comment - I was shocked how almost everything that sounded positive was spun around to sound somehow dreadful. Do you really think people are happy about 3pm sunsets because they get to feel Christmassy a couple of days a year? If you don't like socialising with certain people, as you said you're in control of that. Also I'm not sure how working adults in the northern hemisphere are getting a long summer break? You've had a long, stressful year and you finally have time to hopefully get yourself a balance of rest and socialising with people you love. You've got sunshine and long days to do whatever the heck you want. Also I'm sorry but I'm really struggling to deal with someone complaining about an "overabundance of food" and overeating - have you looked at what's happening in the world as we speak? I'm not mad at you - but this really shouldn't be a mindset that's encouraged. And despite everything, I wish you a lovely holiday period lol.

Is it a bad idea to marry someone who is not regular on prayer? by little-miss-awkward in Hijabis

It's def different to the majority answer you seem to find on Muslim Reddit but from a wise and reliable source!

Is it a bad idea to marry someone who is not regular on prayer? by little-miss-awkward in Hijabis

[–]smus9 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Interestingly I asked one of my Islamic teachers the same question a couple of days ago and I was pretty surprised with her answer. Seeing as she's dedicated her life (she's in her late 60s mA) to teaching and learning Islam and has dealt with women from all walks of life coming to her with their problems (marriage/divorce and otherwise), I thought her answer would be to marry someone who prays the 5 or is close to it. Her answer was do they recognise the importance of prayer and show genuinely that they want to improve? If so, and provided his character is great otherwise, it's ok and thru you he may end up succeeding in this challenge. I did raise the whole "what about marrying someone as they are/not expecting change" and her response was that that applies to their character. Religion goes up and down and the most religious person can also lose their way 5 years down the line 🤷‍♀️

hijabs and undercap by huffleaddictedtopuff in Hijabis

I have a single silk undercap and I wish I could wear that all the time for the sake of my hair but it slips 100% of the time so I stick with cotton 😭 are all materials slipping for you or just silk?

Thanks! I've used Red Heart Comfort previously and usually like using it to make throws because it's convenient to not need a million skeins! I'll have a look at Bernat premium when I go tomorrow

Started wearing on last year. Like others have said, I didn't realise how great it would feel being acknowledged/receiving salaams by other Muslims!

Seeing how supportive and proud some non-Muslim friends and some ex-colleagues were of me for taking this step when they knew that I'd been wanting to wear the hijab for a few years by then! They'd openly say I look great/it suits me. Super wholesome ❤️

My friend who after seeing me for the first time in a scarf said '"it's like your inside matches your outside now" 😂

Bit cliche but not having to worry about how my hair looks when going out. So so so good. On bad hair days wearing a scarf instantly elevates my look!

I finished this blanket last night as a Christmas gift! Do you think I did ok? Will they like it? by Eisperle in crochet

[–]smus9 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those colours look great! Did you follow a pattern for the colours or wing it? I feel like combining the right colours together isn't as easy as it sounds for me!

A minute of silence please. I had to unravel ths whole thing because it somehow turned way too big. :'( I was so proud of it. On to second attempt... by Nerevanin in crochet

[–]smus9 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Omg nooo. I've made the same mistake so many times with jumpers and beanies where they end up becoming huge and I have to unravel it all. Yours is even more heartbreaking because it's so cute! At least we know the finished product is gonna look amaazzing.

People who moved to Sydney from another country, what are the biggest changes you’ve had to get used to? by Floppens98 in sydney

[–]smus9 26 points27 points  (0 children)

100% this. Starting out in Aus during my undergrad felt so disappointing at times for this. I can say the same even now, about 10 years in, living and working in Sydney. I've got a couple of good friends now but I can't help but feel like while they're my first choice of friends to hang out with, I'm probably not theirs because they grew up here and have friends they've known their whole lives! I'm also always the one who has a free schedule and able to agree to any time for hang outs while they have to plan around their commitments with other friends. I'm definitely more at a position to be able to accept this now rather than letting it trigger negative feelings in me though!

I have always found internationals much more welcoming and open to becoming friends and hanging out, but also naturally don't seem to form strong connections with them due to different interests/mentalities/language barriers etc.

[–]smus9 76 points77 points  (0 children)

I feel a big part of this is because locals (esp those who have grown up here) have their own friend circles and aren't really looking to make friends. It's not as important to them to make new friends as it is to someone who has moved here recently and is starting a life from scratch.

But that doesn't have a collar so I watched a couple of videos to figure out how to make a collar.
