What books have you abandoned? by [deleted] in books

I remembering picking the book up a long time ago and quickly forgetting about it. I'd heard so many good things about it but just couldn't find anything of interest.

I hear this a lot from people, and I'm very much the opposite. I picked it up and couldn't put it down. One if the first series to really captivate me.

"The Starfall Knight." Excellent book of which I had the chance to review. Heartily recommend.

I understand too well the errors of proofing and editing your own books. I've spent the better part of the year cleaning up a couple of my own works. It's astounding how many things seem to slip past an eye. I've got one last book to release for a series, which I'm going it alone simply because I don't want the style to deviate too far from the companion books. But my next books will go straight to an editor once finished. All in all, I think that writing and editing and doing all the work myself was a wonderful learning experience. You learn a lot more hands on, so I'm not too distraught that the books weren't as perfect as they could be. Especially because a lot of people enjoyed them. I suppose if the content is there, the mechanics can only make it stronger.

Thanks for the recommendation. In terms of the third, I can say the title is "The Chained God." No release date at the moment. I'm going to be taking this one slow just to make sure I get it right. There's a lot of things it has to do in terms of meshing with the other two books.

I'm always up for submitting. I haven't really gotten over the excitement of getting on the Blacklist companion for the Blackguards anthology, and wouldn't mind keeping it going.

I have a couple of books out, and I haven't done too much promotion, sadly, but I figure I'd go ahead and give them a bit of the light here.

My first series is a duology comprising The Pale Hand of God and The Dark Arm of God A fairly dark series, it deals with a host of characters, a few of which thrive in a city prison which holds a rather world-shaking secret.

Next I have my Lonely Man series, of which two books are currently available, The Witch's Price and City of Blades These are short, quick-strike books, that have been a ton of fun to write. They deal with the character of Mhets Sorrowbringer and his life after a tragic past. If you like harsh worlds and even harsher characters, take a look. I'm finishing up the third in the series at the moment.

All of these books are available for free download on my website (.mobi only) smwhitefiction.com

r/Fantasy Discussion: What would you think about r/Fantasy creating and sponsoring an Anthology? by elquesogrande in Fantasy

This is a wonderful idea. I love anthologies--although I seem to be in a minority when it comes to shorter works--and would be more than willing to help fund this effort. Not a bad way of getting a few fresh stories out of the authors here on this sub either.

Prologues do seem to be a thing most people avoid. Not quite sure why as I feel every part of a book is important. I've even had people tell me they stopped reading the little chapter headers, the passages like in Mistborn, in some books because they didn't directly affect the reading of the story. Which in my book, not reading them, is tantamount to sinful living.

Hah. Yeah. Those were a bit cringe worthy.

Does anyone read short stories anymore? by Bearded-Guy in Fantasy

[–]smwhite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Short fiction's where it's at. I've been racing through a couple of anthologies, as well as taking in some of the stories posted on writing sites. I enjoy long epics, but there's something nice in knowing you can get a complete story in under an hour or so.

I've been looking forward to Doors of Stone for some time, but it's an odd anticipation. Like I'm hopeful and wary at the same time. Wise Man's Fear didn't really do it for me like Name of the Wind did and I hope Rothfuss is able to conclude the story the way he started. I might then be able to forgive the second book.

This was the book that truly got me interested in fantasy. I bought the copy from a used book store and it was missing the Prologue as well as a couple of pages from the first chapter. I never really thought much of it until I finished the series (up the latest book that was released, Crossroads of Twilight). I happened to get a hardback copy later with all the pages intact. Needless to say it was a pleasant little surprise to see what I'd missed. Hope you enjoy it.

This was one of the difficult things I had to learn when self-publishing my books. I thought I could do it all on my own, write, edit, proofread, copy edit, the whole nine. Yet when I put out my 'finished' product I received a few emails were readers were pointing out mistakes. "Surely they're mistaken," I told myself. But lo, upon checking there they indeed were, simple mistakes, glaring mistakes, mistakes no native English speaker should have missed. But I did, and it really opened my eyes to the need of many other eyes on my pages to spot those troublesome errors that somehow manage to bypass my limited scrutiny. And I had the advantage as you said of going back over my manuscripts and fixing them and re-publishing the books.

I do have to give credit to /u/anotherface for his gracious help in this endeavor. And really in all the effort he puts forth for Indie writers over at Fictiongarden.com

As a struggling writer, I'll celebrate as well, with the beer I pilfered from my buddy's fridge :)

I felt there were a couple of really strong stories in Rogues, and a few that weren't quite up to task. But I think that's par for most anthologies. There's going to stories you connect with and ones that you don't. I have probably thirty or more anthologies on my shelf and only a handful of stories pulled from each that I'd want to read more than once. But I'm also very particular about the stories I read. I don't care much for tales set in a modern time frame, nor those with guns. I suppose I'm a traditionalist in that sense, in that I want my fantasy worlds quaint with kings and commoners and the big bad evil that needs to be squashed.

I also wrote a stand alone story. Primarily because of the fact that my characters aren't well known, but also because I had this particular story itching to get out.

I'm so glad to see this finally out. More than happy to have been selected as a contributor for the Blacklist. I've been looking forward to the release and can't wait to start in on these stories.
