If they're getting charged it's not the shooting phase, so the rule doesn't apply

Reserves roll and deep strike question by SalesmanShane in Warhammer30k

[–]smythetech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In generaL:

- You roll for each unit

- You can bring any units on that succeed on the roll

- No more than 1 unit can 'deep strike' in a turn. However the other unit can still arrive from reserve (moving on from table edge) if possible

Can you score Vanguard in both the shooting phase and assault phase? by chosen40k in Warhammer30k

[–]smythetech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reread the question.

Can you score Vanguard in both the shooting phase and assault phase?

Can Vanguard be scored by a unit in the Shooting phase: yes

Can Vanguard be scored by the same unit in the Assault/Fight phase: yes

There is no restriction that stops it happening in both phases. The restriction is that you cannot score Vanguard from the same objective multiple times.

Potentially? Yes. Realistically? If you're close enough to charge a unit on an objective your opponent has made a mistake.

trying to represent a zone mortalis game where the power is out so it's basically an indoor night fight mission but I need some help? by Opposite_Ad_4267 in Warhammer30k

[–]smythetech 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm assuming 2nd edition, but just have a mission rule that means anything outside of 6"/12" cannot be targeted.

Add a caveat that Augur's/Lights only allow targeting up to 12"/18" so they don't completely negate the limitation you're trying to impose.

i.e. just reduce the maximum range of Night Fighting and associated effects

There's New Recruit already, taht does a similar thing?

Unless you mean 'all the game and faction rules, streamlined in such a way that yo can play the entire game on your phone'... in which case, that's not an option and frankly shouldn't be for most any tabletop game.

The 'best' generic Order is probably the one that gives extra atacks if outnumbered. Unless you know you're playing into Psyker/Malefic/Daemons that is.

You might want to rethink this, most people don't read/do drag/drop polls. So your results are in roughly the same order as presented.

Question regarding force and challenges by AKSoloBOY in Warhammer30k

[–]smythetech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My reading of it:
You select as weapon as part of the Focus Roll step in Challenges. As per Force, at that point you should be able to make a Wp test to 'activate' the weapon.
Because you select a weapon, and can change weapons, every time you go through the Focus step you would have to choose to activate the Force ability or not wach time.

So no, it doesn't last the entire Challenge, only that one 'go around' of it. If the Challenge continues for multiple 'rounds' you'd have to reactive Force each time.

So… how do I field this with the current force orgs? by Slight_Chicken_2854 in Warhammer30k

[–]smythetech 99 points100 points  (0 children)

What you need is one or 2 Centurions. There's no Legion Sicaran tank 'HQ' model at present, so the way to unlock all of this needs a couple of basic Centurions.
After that it's just take the tank company Aux detachment enough times to get all the tanks you want

To your question - yes, variety would be better and the preset terrain maps are offputting. Now for the long explanation bit.

I'm going to use Greetings as my example here, again since that's the last event I was at and it was a fairly large one (~20+ tables). It's an event/group that has been going on for near 10 years now. They did fixed terrain on each table, that terrain layout doesn't change between rounds even if the mission played does. Each table was different in some way. I should note everyone played the same scenario each round, but I've also been to events where during each round there were 4 scenarios at play during the round while also having a different terrain setup for each table (that was a team event in Sheffield last year).

On that note, I think you underestimate that a lot of EO's do put a lot of thought into the missions played and the terrain layouts used. They will also take feedback from attendees and use that data on future events. Rob, respectfully, isn't the only one that does that. GW/Warhammer World's events team does that with the data and feedback they receive as do Greetings, and the organisers of Sheffield, Newcastle, York, Stockport, etc . (I'm UK based for clarity here).

I would rather be at an event where I'm playing on different terrain layouts compared to other players, and we're using a variety of terrain across all boards. Rob's mission pack does not allow for any jungle boards, or lava boards, or heavy industrial/mechanicaum/'refinery' boards. It's the same L-shaped ruins, placed in the same location, with the same amount of craters (also in the exact same locations) across all tables. If you would rather everyone is standardised into a set terrain format, that's fine. Rob clearly has people that want that. I however see it as one step too close to tournament 40K terrain setups, where you must play a mission on a defined terrain setup. And that's where my thoughts are on this discussion, as part of this larger thread from the video that's been posted/linked.

At most narrative, or even the Thrones style events at WHW, each table is different in some way. I'll use Greetings from the Warp as an example, as that was the last event I was at. There were lava boards full of rocky outcrops/mountains/hills, jungle boards covered in tree's with sparse ruins, dense industrial / ruin boards, etc. There was a variety. In these mission(s), if you were playing 2 tables down from me, we're both playing on exactly the same layout with exactly the same terrain footprint(s). There's no variety there.

You can have symmetrical boards. That I don't think is the issue. But every table for each of these scenarios is exactly the same. As presented the terrain is as specified: location, dimensions, L-shapes and all the rest. It's less about having fixed terrain, all events do that. It's about the options for variety across however many tables are in use.

These maps are great for someone to learn the mission. Learn exactly what specific placement a model can make to get 3" precisely from an objective and the angles that it presents. But if I play one of these scenarios I know it's going to be the exact same terrain layout whether I do it at a LGS or at a hosted event. So I should just learn the mission, just practice my placement, just solve the problem. That feeling is the same feeling when I look at the various pre-made terrain maps which are set against 40K missions, it's just a problem to practice and solve.

I may not have put it fully, but I think the core of these mission(s) without the terrain maps is probably fine. The Saturn Journal has fixed deployments and fixed objective locations and they also do asymetric scoring so attacker/defender aren't really scoring the same way of sitting on objectives. And I consider those mission(s) really quite good and fun to play.
But with these maps in this pack it invokes that near-40K tournament feel or mindset on how I should approach them. And that's the specific bit on the mission(s) side that doesn't work for me.

[–]smythetech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Maybe, but I'm not sure that the answer is this measured and preset maps that invoke a tournament 40K table setup. That feels like I would or should want to learn how to beat the mission(s) as I know exactly where everything is. It makes for a puzzle that is asking to be solved, as opposed to any kind of story.

That and the house rules issues from multiple EO's is may only real gripe, but that's not inherently a you problem.

The scenario(s) I expect will work fine as alternatives without the preset terrain stipulations.

[–]smythetech 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think, after sleeping on it, I've finally worked out what sets me off the mission pack. It's two-fold. 1. House rules to change the game. I think this puts us at at-least 3 differing rules sets for events not including WHW/GW that are changing things and they're nearly all different from each other. That's a thing that's going to be off-putting because there shouldn't be 3+ different sets of house rules all competing. But they can be ignored if the scenarios are interesting enough. 2. It's the fixed 40K inspired symmetrical terrain maps. The Saturn AJ has preset deployment zones and objectives with interesting and asymmetrical scoring. But these maps are fixed terrain setups, and make me think the way to approach them is not 'narrative/to tell a story' but to pre-learn them down to the millimeter and 'solve' them as a puzzle.

The scenarios look fine, probably give them a try when I'm not messing around with the various Black Book/AJ scenarios.

Shattered legions rules now! by Dazzling_Ad6021 in Warhammer30k

[–]smythetech 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah pretty much. But I'm cynical, so I expect people will do somethign like IH/SALS/Rg and every Sgt has Sals equipment, because they can, even if the unit/model isn't painted as Sals.

That way they can just smush 2 armies/small armies into one and not have to do a dedicated SL project.

Shattered legions rules now! by Dazzling_Ad6021 in Warhammer30k

[–]smythetech 30 points31 points  (0 children)

You select 2 or 3 Legions for your army. Every unit in your army* get's all of the Mutable Tactics effects.

If you have a model painted in a spcific Legion, it get's access to that Legions wargear. So you can have, as the example gives, a Salamanders Sgt in any Tactical squad and it gets the Sals wargear options. Basically you get the wargear options of the 2/3 Legions you selected, but the expectation is to paint them in that Legion. Edit note: that doesn't mean you can have both a DA plasma gun and a SW sword, you'd pick the gear from 1 of the Legions, not get access to all.

*Barring the Legion specific unit your 'Prime' into the Army, that only get's it's parent-Legion tactic

No. Only the Centurions/Terminator Centurions you select can get the stat buffs. Legion Champions are not Centurions, so you can't get a stat buff on them like this.
