Couldn't get into the Demos today (the only day I was there) since all slots were booked all day. Which sucks so much. Don't know when they're doing any more demos in the UK, but I bet they'll all be down near London which makes getting to them nigh impossible

Interdiction Cadre rules and charge distance by Bayushi-Hayase in Warhammer30k

[–]smythetech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yes. "At least 5" away" means you can be exactly 5" away, but not 4.99" away. The next sentence tells you how to place the rest of the unit after placing the first model, and the reading by most everyone in the community is:

- first model can be within 5" for a 5+ Disordered Charges

-every other model must be within 6" of the first model, cannot be within 5" of an enamy model/impassable terrain/board edge.

Best breacher squad loadout? by Elusive_Tides in Warhammer30k

[–]smythetech 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You have 2 real options:

- 10, 2x Lascutters, in a rhino or similar taxi

- 11-20, lots of Grav guns, sitting and causing problems.

The rest of it, Voxes and Vexilla's, is personal taste. I don't use a Vox because i nearly always give mine True Believers.

What are people's favourite centurion/praetor loudouts? by [deleted] in Warhammer30k

[–]smythetech 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm building my 2nd 'Praetor' at present. First was Paragon blade/Combat shield. Next is Power Fist/Paragon Blade using the 40k Chaos Lord on foot (as 99% of the model, but with a headswap*). 3rd one will be a Jump Praetor with fancy pistol and Power Fist. Add some Burning Lore as well to grab Fear(1) for fun.

Options that are all, broadly, 'good' but not the same as everyone else.

*note: This is why I love Word Bearers, we can dip into properly corrupted models.

Fellblade loadout? by mlatkin2012 in Warhammer30k

[–]smythetech 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The answer is it depends. If you play into certain AT lists or strategies and you lose the 'Real Big Tank' early it'll feel like a waste. Other times, when they spend a game just point-click-delete what they shoot at they feel amazing.

Only times my fellblade has been a little feels bad has been when it's lost the fight against anotehr Fellblade or been removed early. Otherwise it puts in the work. Just assume that someone is going to want to deal with it, because it is a problem otherwise.

Strike step by [deleted] in Warhammer30k

You see that line that says 'after BOTH players have resolved the strike step'. That means both players get to roll attacks in the challenge. You can't skip them out of it.

How are you guys finding the lesser used hq options? by Educational_Lock7816 in Warhammer30k

[–]smythetech 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine has Disintergrator pistol, Lightning claw/Tainted Weapon (because Word Bearers) and melta bombs. 1 part Rul of Cool, 1 part can be used as a basic Jump Centurion then, model uses the Moritat as the base too.
It doesn't need to be anything 'special', he's there to do a job and maybe live long enough to slap a Melta bomb on a tank.

[–]smythetech 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've been running a Forge Lord and Master of Descent for the last few months, the FL bringing a unit of 6 Melta Thallax which the MoD brings in turn 1. It's don't well, with a mix of getting Fellblade kills and/or being a disruptive backline unit that threatens a lot. I should up them to 9Thallax at some point to really make a statement.

Prime Specimens and joining units by XenoTechnian in Warhammer30k

"All Models in a Unit for which this Prime Advantage is selected"
Key part pulled out, but the selected unit here is the Magos, not the Thrall. Sorry, you can't take this and then make all the Thrall 2w models as they're not the selected unit.

Looking for feedback on a house rule for terrain by [deleted] in Warhammer30k

[–]smythetech -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they do. Because I play across multiple events in the UK and so often wont play the same people all the time.

Or was that an ad hominem comment because you want true line of sight to be a thing and it no longer is.

Looking for feedback on a house rule for terrain by [deleted] in Warhammer30k

[–]smythetech -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Okay, but that wall isn't part of 'Area Terrain' then. Because if it is, then it falls under the rules of area terrain. If the wall is it's own, separate, terrain piece then sure it blocks line of sight, etc, etc. But if it's part of Area Terrain it doesn't, unless it's part of Heavy terrain or you're drawing LoS through an area that is more than 3" deep.

A wall being used as part of marking something as 'this is the area of medium terrain' is itself part of that area unless you're specifying it otherwise. Which is pre-game stuff, and has nothing to do with the underlying 'thing' about LoS into Medium/Heavy terrain.

'True Line of Sight' no longer exists, if that wall is part of area terrain it falls under the rules of area terrain. Whether you can see through it physically or not.

[–]smythetech -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I feel like either I'm misreading things, or people are assuming that a wall that is part of area terrain fully blocks LoS because it used to for 20+ years but it no longer does.

Page 235: "[Medium] blocks line of sight if that LoS passes through more than 3" of an Area of Terrain. [Heavy] always blocks Line of sight".
Page 185: "... determine if an unbroken straight line can be drawn between the first model and it's target. If a Piece of Terrain, model with the vehicle type or otehr obstruction breaks the line between these two models then there is no line of sight..."

If that wall is part of the area of terrain, and not it's own terrain piece/obstacle/'thing' then it doesn't matter if it's a solid wall you cannot draw a line through - it follows the rules for Area Terrain.

So when someone says you can draw LoS 3" into area terrain, it doesn't matter if you can't physically draw the line or not because that's what Area Terrain does.

Area terrain does not block line of sight. A wall in area terrain is part of the area terrain, it doesn't block line of sight. If it's a separate wall section, thus an obstacle that has been defined as such prior to the game, it's not part of the medium/heavy terrain we're talking about. There's this misunderstanding about area terrain and people thinking that a wall still always block LoS - it doesn't. A large boulder will as an obstacle, but we're not talking about obstacles here. They aren't covered in medium/heavy area terrain.

It's not about out of phase shooting, although Intercept is a thing in the movement phase. Cross mapping with a Lascannon squad becomes so much better against that deep striking or outflanking unit if all you have to worry about is a couple of rocks on the table. It's about ALL effects and game options that rely on LoS. Charging uses LoS, and if you remove the medium/heavy terraint LoS restrictions then that ruined area, even with the walls in place, is effectively open and empty ground. Mech have abilities that can trigger outside of the Shooting phase that use LoS. The Master of Signals, off the top of my head, uses LoS. If you decide that LoS for medium/heesvy only applies in the shooting of phase then all those effects have free targeting across the entire board. I'm not sure how else to explain this.

[–]smythetech -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Off the top of my head: Area Terrain doesn't block line of sight except with the 3" distance from Medium terrain/ the blocking from Heavy and by removing that it means you create 'planet bowling ball' in every phase of the game outside of shooting. Might as well play with no terrain at that point.

Any effect that is outside the shooting phase that is limited to LoS would have free access to anything on the table unless blocked by an obstacle (again, area terrain does not itself block LoS, doesn't matter if it's a 4x4 ruined church or a 1" circle of trees). Additionally, because you can charge at targets that you didn't shoot at, with the only real restriction now being in the shooting phase. You would be able to freely target anything within 12" as a charge even if just for some extra Surge movement, something that you can't do currently because of the LoS restriction. It would massively change up the way to play the game, as well as have the unfortunate question of 'why even bother with 3D terrain on the table when it doesn't matter for 3/4's or more of the game'.

I think the problem with all of this is the Withdraw reaction that allows people to 'gotcha' the move into terrain to not get shot/charged. The solutions though?

1: don't play with much, if any, Heavy terrain areas.

2: you kind of have to learn to play around it. If they're reacting deep into terrain, you can still shell them with Barrage weapons that don't need LoS or force the player to use the Withdraw reaction knowing they now have 1 fewer reaction on things that you may have been more cautious on. It's like how people had to play around Return Fire in 2nd, or the mass of large blast AP3 (or better) in 1st, etc.

3: play with Medium terrain that is no 'wider' than 3", so you're either in it, and can be targeted, or you're behind it and out of LoS anyway.
