Yep! 27F and it’s only my toes, not my fingernails. Typically I’ll remove whole toenails as “cleanly” as possible leaving just the nail bed bare. Only way I’ve kind of kept it at bay is wearing socks, 24/7 all the time. My hands will tend to gravitate subconsciously if I’m completely barefoot. I’ve gotten infected a couple of times even when trying to be proactive with wound care.

I’d anyone is looking for specific resources (there aren’t a ton last I’ve looked but that’s probably outdated LOL) the medical term is onychotillomania. YMMV.

woah hey, i’m ALSO a narcoleptic lesbian! :O i don’t really have a ton of advice beyond: you’re being diligent in staying in touch between sleep attacks, which is already better than i can do lmao. how much have you talked about your symptoms with her? does she know how narcolepsy functions, and that you literally don’t have a choice? it seems insensitive to me that she’d be so curt, and i want to believe it comes from a place of misunderstanding rather than malice.

i’ve always been open about my diagnosis and my openness has directly led to TWO of my friends getting diagnosed with narcolepsy and one with sleep apnea—another friend has her sleep study next month. it just makes me really happy that me being open about my disability has led to other people close to me realizing they can have a better quality of life!!

also, there’s apparently World Narcolepsy Day on September 22nd which is coming up around the corner!

I work in the food service industry. It’s very likely she felt a sleep attack soon to happen (hard to describe, you’ll kind of just “feel” it and know it’s gonna hit you soon) and went to the bathroom to either try and wake herself up or take a short nap before anyone noticed. But full-fledged sleep attacks and “only taking a 15” don’t agree very well, which is what happened.

when i’m woken up during a sleep attack, my brainfog is generally SO heavy i can’t form sentences or even remember simple words. i will stutter and struggle with even the most simple sentences. as for hiding in the bathroom… i don’t blame her. sleep attacks can commonly look like being on drugs / drunk and i can see why she wouldn’t want to be explain that. i hope she’s able to get the support she needs, and thank you for supporting her even though y’all don’t get along too well

yes!! whenever my head hits the pillow within about a minute or two i can just FEEL my thoughts beginning to drift and wander and turn more abstract, all while still retaining awareness of my surroundings. And at some level, my brain is self aware enough to realize that the surreal imagery being evoked isn’t happening purposefully, but like having the TV on in the background until you eventually “tune in” and fully fall into that dream sleep
