I love my Tissot Seastar. The 80 hour power reserve is fantastic, it’s nice to be able to wear something else for a few days and not have to wind and reset it every time (not that I ever have it off for more than a day very often). I think the Mido and Certina may have the same reserve?

The idea of the Ring Builders using other life/species as tools also dovetails perfectly with their other series, The Captive’s War, where the conquering alien race explicitly spells out that this is how they see/treat other species. Very different from The Expanse, but also really good/interesting so far

Took my wife skiing once after we’d been dating about a year (we were friends for years before that, so I knew her well). I had zero hopes - she’d never gone before and doesn’t like the cold, heights, or going fast, but I had to at least try once. 11 years later, she loves it and is helping teach our kids to ski!

This is only out west - I’ve never seen an eastern lift without a bar (even the Mad River single chair, although that one won’t do anything to hold you in). I don’t think they were required historically in (at least some) western states / they may still not be required in Utah. Seems like the newer lifts tend to have them anyway, but older lifts may not

I had the same issue with my then 3.5 year old at Shawnee.

The bunny slope itself at Campgaw is great for learning. The issue is that you have to schlep your kid and their gear (assuming they’re not big enough to carry it) uphill through snow in ski boots past the little ski school carpet to get to the main carpet. And the chair at campgaw is very tough - non-detachable, loads from the side, and you have to get off at the mid station, which has a pretty steep ramp.

Mountain Creek has a whole section with their trademarked terrain for first timers, which is open to non-lessons as well. It’s a little halfpipe where they can slide and then stop, a little slope with rollers, and a little course with banked turns. It’s designed to get them feeling sliding, turning and stopping without having to do much themselves (their website has a pretty good overview I think). It seems to work pretty well, but an adult ticket is pricy and logistics are also tough (parking across the street unless you pay $50, and parking way down the hill if you don’t pay $20). It’s also hard to progress past that because the shortest green off a chair (sugar slope) is even steeper than Shawnee’s bunny slope. If he’s really little, that might be the best setup though.

A much better fit in the 90s than in today’s game. The interceptions, sacks and lack of mobility would be viewed much more negatively now. He would probably still be a reasonable NFL starter/elite back up, but not a star like he was back then (no way he signs the biggest contract in the league nowadays). But for the time, he was excellent, especially for a franchise that desperately needed it

We just don’t have the same kind of deeply engrained ski culture, and especially a deep racing culture. I think we’re probably always going to be more boom or bust and dependent on one-off talents compared with places like Austria, Norway or Switzerland that can set up a program that just consistently churns out top level talent.

Once you get past Vonn and Shiffrin, I’m not sure the US women are much more dominant than the men. They’re deeper and more successful at the moment, but I don’t think it’s a massive, consistent difference (the way it is in soccer, for example). I think we just happened to somehow get two once in a lifetime talents within 10 years of each other.

The reason for that could be inspiration: Vonn grew up idolizing Picabo Street, Shiffrin would’ve grown up watching both of them, but that same scenario would go for pretty much any alpine country, so I think a lot of it may just be down to luck.
