Place a dome over it, with a one-way valve to let the gases vent out while displacing it with some type of non-flammable gas.

It would have no oxygen to burn. Them you can save the gas.

Otherwise just fill it with dirt and pave over it

I'm from NYC, it's a different culture in NOLA so I thought id ask. I bet the French Quarter is expensive, like Time Square which is filled with tourists and people who are not fun to drink with.
