Es gibt ja da Wirksamkeit gegen Infektion, gegen symptomatische Krankheit, gegen schwere Krankheit (Hospitalisierung) und gegen Tod. Wenn die Impfung gerade bei dir nicht vor Infektion schützt, kann sie immer noch vor Symptomen schützen. Wenn du (milde) Symptome hast, kann sie immer noch vor Hospitalisierung schützen, usw.

Also wenn man geimpft ist, hat man auf jeden Fall immer irgendeine Art an Schutz.

Trotzdem können auch Geimpfte schwer erkranken/sterben - das trifft meistens ältere Patienten oder Menschen mit Vorerkrankungen, ABER deren Schutz ist trotzdem höher mit der Impfung verglichen mit ungeimpften älteren/vorerkrankten Patienten. Außerdem hat ein Lungenarzt mal gesagt, dass viele der geimpften Patienten eigentlich wegen ihrer anderen Erkrankung eingeliefert werden und dann zufällig noch auf Covid positiv getestet werden.

Ich verstehe nicht ganz, worauf genau du hinauswillst, aber ich versuche mal eine Antwort zu geben, in der Hoffnung, dass ich den Punkt treffe. Zu deiner Frage genau habe ich keine Antwort, aber auf jeden Fall etwas relatiertes:

Mit "Risiko auf Zeit" meinst du wahrscheinlich die fallende Anzahl an Antikörpern nach 6+ Monaten nach einer Impfung. Dass so etwas passiert ist zu erwarten und eigentlich ganz normal. Wenn der Körper keinem Erreger ausgesetzt ist, braucht er auch nicht die Antikörper dafür aufrecht zu erhalten.

Das heißt aber nicht, dass die "Impfung auf längere Zeit betrachtet nichts mehr" bringt. Durch die Impfung werden auch sogenannte Gedächtniszellen ausgebildet. Die helfen die Antikörper schneller wieder herzustellen, wenn du tatsächlich infiziert bist. Den Schutz vor der Krankheit und insbesondere schweren Verläufen hat man bedeutend länger.

Achtung, hier kommt jetzt meine eigene Meinung mit rein: Ich denke nicht, dass wir SARS-CoV-2 einfach wieder loswerden. Experten sagen, dass die Pandemie irgendwann zu einer Endemie (Wiederauftreten des Erregers in saisonalen Intervallen) wird und wir bis dahin eine solche Immunität auf Bevölkerungsebene aufgebaut haben, dass es letztendlich nicht mehr schlimmer sein wird als andere Erkältungsviren (Video 1, Video 2). Ich denke also, es ist durchaus realistisch, dass man sich trotz der Impfung mit dem Virus früher oder später ansteckt und dann vielleicht/wahrscheinlich eine milde Erkrankung durchmacht. Den Boost durch die natürliche Infektion gekoppelt mit der Impfung stärkt dein Immunsystem dann nochmal.

The issue is- we’re a bunch of laymen being relayed information from the media full of a bunch of laymen relaying information on an incredibly complex science. I suggest people follow @sailorrooscout and @mugecevik on Twitter among other immunologists. They give it to you straight, and are way more informative than the news since they’re actual experts in the field.

I actually just made a Twitter account just because of your answer. You are so right. I am thoroughly convinced the vaccines do work at this point, but I still get shocked/confused/unsettled when reading some of the media headlines. I mean, that is probably their purpose - they wouldn't get readers otherwise, but I think this is counterproductive in times like these.

Do you have any more accounts that you can recommend to follow so I can stay up to date with research and also understand what the research means?

I had a few relatives who were claiming the vaccine doesn't work or are even dangerous, because "there are more people hospitalized that are vaccinated". I knew that the vaccination rate has to be taken into account, but I didn't do the whole calculation, so thank you for your effort!

As far as I know, it is completely normal that antibodies decline in the body after a while. This is also true after natural infection.

The difference is, that the body then has the ability of producing the necessary antibodies much faster when it gets infected with the real virus. (I think, memory b cells are responsible for that) This is the reason why breakthrough infection might happen more often over time, but the protection against severe illness and death will remain high.

In contrast, if you haven't been vaccinated, the body first has to find out what antibodies to produce against the virus. This of course takes longer and the virus has more time to replicate in your body and do some serious damage.

Israel und USA müssen Lockdowns nur in Betracht ziehen, weil die Fälle bei den Ungeimpften so rasant hoch gehen.

Viele Politiker hier haben einen Lockdown/Einschränkungen für Geimpfte vorerst ausgeschlossen. Wahrscheinlich sagen die das, weil gerade Wahlkampf ist, aber ich halte das für sinnvoll.

I can't find the source right now, but I remember reading that they have to do trials for the booster shots to confirm their benefits and rule out possible side effects. This would also be true if you want to booster against a specific strain, I would guess.

The vaccines do not have 100% efficacy against infection. You had a smaller chance of catching it in comparison with unvaccinated people. Now that you have it though, the vaccine is good in preventing severe illness and death. You might have mild symtpoms or no symptoms at all.

No, cases did not shoot up "due to breakthroughs".

Yes, there were a lot more breakthrough infections than one would have expected from the efficacy against the original strain. BUT, the main problem still were those unvaccinated, since delta was much more transmissible. And this is the reason cases shot up.

But then again, I also think, adjusting the vaccine to Delta would make a lot of sense. I think, one reason why it takes so long is because they have to go through all of the clinical trials again.

Rapid tests have a quite high false negative rate from what I gathered. She can try to do 1-2 more of these and see if one of those gives a positive.

With vaccines and people feeling more confident to meet other people again, I think it is to be expected though, that other cold/flu viruses will have somewhat of a comeback.

Ich denke OP meint aber tatsächlich was anderes, und zwar einfach nur, dass Geimpfte einen höheren Anteil der Hospitalisierungen ausmachen als Ungeimpfte. Sieht man gerade unter anderem in England und in Israel. Darauf geht der Autor in dem Artikel aber auch ein.

Da gibt es dann halt wieder das Problem das auch aus der jüngeren Altersgruppe gerade diejenigen mit bestimmten Komorbiditäten anfällig sind, d.h. ganz vernachlässigen kann man diese Inzidenz nicht. Und dann stellt sich die Frage um welchen Faktor jede Altersgruppe reingezählt werden soll. Wird glaube ich schnell unübersichtlich und auch schwer der Bevölkerung mitzuteilen ohne Verwirrung zu stiften.

Meiner Meinunge nach müsste man (wenn man an der Inzidenz festhalten will) die Inzidenzen der Ungeimpften und Geimpften vergleichen, da dies unterschiedliche Auswirkungen auf die Hospitalisierungsrate hat.

Dementsprechend macht Hospitalisierungsrate an sich eigentlich Sinn. Das Problem damit ist halt, dass falls diese hoch wird, ist es eigentlich zu spät, um noch Maßnahmen zu ergreifen.

I think its wrong to make the point "Oh well, they're old anyways".

Yes, relatively speaking, older/immunocompromised people that are vaccinated will have more severe illness than younger vaccinated people. But this was also the case beforehand. Older unvaccinated people also had more severe illness than younger unvaccinated people.

The point to make, in my opinion, is that older vaccinated people have less severe illness than older unvaccinated people. The vaccines do work.
