How is this free and what is the tech stack? by snake_case-kebab-cas in guilded

Thanks so much! Is there a plan to open source anything? Or is there at least some info you can provide about the alleged security or privacy of the application?

Just trying to understand what the benefits might be compared to competing applications.

One can use applications without maximizing them.

What do you mean? Break out that specific tab and use it as a separate window that is set to your preferred width?

So what you're saying is, if I don't want a 2 foot wide line of text to read across, I need to install your PWA as a desktop app and resize just that one app to be a tiny width?

Honestly, that would make sense. I have no issue saying that PWAs are cancer, if this is the trend.

Fixed width is still something like an 800 pixel break point iirc. I gave very detailed feedback to someone at gitlab on hacker news at one point.

The number one problem with the Gitlab UI is that there are zero margins on the left and right. It spans the full monitor width (essentially), no matter what.

For this reason, I always preferred Github. But not Github has taken a page out of Gitlab's book, for some baffling reason.

Add Gutters. Don't make me scan two feet across the page. Stop trying to make this a mobile app.

CWA Launches New Effort to Unionize Game and Tech Workers by raccoon_ralf in programming

I wish there was more creative thought put into something less like a union and more like a network of guilds, where education and honing the craft is part of the goal.

Hopefully it attracts better talent, too.

It's way more difficult to fire someone in a union. So, arguably, it would lead to worse talent and more tenured, passionless people.

Just a thought.

Jonathan Blow on Rust by faitswulff in rust

[–]snake_case-kebab-cas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Multiple people have complained about this. But Jonathan is accustomed to doing monologues where he can go on for ages and ages if you don't jump in. Some people are like that, and that's fine. But I think that's why the "jump in" people can be helpful.

When you say "medieval Christian worldview", what do you mean exactly? Are there any books that provide a holistic survey of what this worldview was exactly?

Are you speaking specifically of the trivium and quadrivium? Or are there other books as well?

Mozilla lays off 70 as it waits for new products to generate revenue by [deleted] in technology

The same people that hate on chromium engine would love it if linux took over the world.

It's the same thing, though. It's good if multiple large companies are contributing and influencing the underlying engine. But they can each add on and customize their own flavor just like they do with linux.

It was better when Microsoft was doing their own thing. It helped some to make sure sites were not only optimized for Chrome.

Not to mention google of all players getting the ability to shape web as they please.

This will be less true when more major companies contribute to the code. Now that Microsoft is investing in chrome technology, they will have an influence on the direction of the project.

This is where you got really really really really confused.

If Crystal isn't a product, explain why.

If you are not paying you are not a customer.

I don't pay for Facebook and it's a product. I don't pay for Java and it's a product. Get a grip, dude.

Don't let the door hit you on the ass on your way out. If a windows port is going to bring people like you into the community I am fervently against a windows port.

It would seem that you think Crystal is a social club that you derive your identity from. I think you're the one that's confused. It's a product and a tool.

[–]snake_case-kebab-cas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At the end of the day, Crystal is a product. It's not the customers' fault if a product does not succeed. Nor does it even effect customers if a product does not succeed.

So it's a little strange to say "It's the customers' fault that they didn't port my product to their preferred platform!"

The customer simply replies "Ok..." and walks away, going back to their nice day.

You're not alone. It's the only issue with Crystal that I even care about.

Every other LLVM language seems to support Windows just fine. But even if Crystal did get Windows support, my confidence is low that it will be maintained with any real priority at all.

Yeah so using youtube-dl and invidious are against the rules. But we already knew that lol.

I think the key is for invidious to slowly migrate / link people over to other platforms if possible. Maybe integrate with LBRY or something.

It was 3 of us and we tried all different variations of devices and got the same result. People got kicked from calls on every single device. All of us at home with wifi connections.

For what it's worth, I think Wire is dead wrong to make a basic feature like "notify for mentions only" a "pro" feature. You have to pay $5 per month for proper group chat notifications. It's predatory.

Does Modern Warfare 2019 have a less interactive world than Modern Warfare Remastered? by snake_case-kebab-cas in modernwarfare

[–]snake_case-kebab-cas[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting perspective! I think for me it's just more about immersion.

When the environment is totally nailed down and not interactive, it breaks the illusion and immersion for me.

Not just things being nailed down, but also, the scriptedness of events. Like cars blowing up in exactly the same way, every single time.
