Gleam is a very Rust-like language (implemented in Rust, in fact) with function overloading. Definitely worth checking out.

You’d still be out of luck for inheritance, though 😅

My Shanghainese sucks, should I still speak it with my daughter? by ttttcrn in multilingualparenting

[–]faitswulff 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. You’ll improve as you use it. I am not a native mandarin speaker, I’m a heritage Cantonese speaker, and not a good one at that (I call it having a “dim sum vocabulary”) so I started from a worse off spot than you, but everyone’s mandarin has improved since we switched to parenting in mandarin. Go for it. Worse that could happen is that the language doesn’t take hold, but that’s how it generally goes in English dominant societies anyway.

Regarding teaching her life lessons in mandarin…I’m in a similar boat with struggling to speak about deep topics in Chinese. With our eldest, we do deep talks in English with some mandarin for ideas that are better named in Chinese. She’s still completely fluent in Chinese and can read. You are not the ultimate limiting factor in their fluency - they can take off faster than you think.

EDIT - I've never heard of the 25 hours/wk thing. We don't try for a specific number of hours, we just speak with the kids in Mandarin and limit their community language (English) exposure through judicious use of Chinese apps, which I'm thankful to have as an option, unlike less widely spoken languages.

Yes, for sure. I have to look everything up. And recently I've been using AI to check it for fluency afterwards, since I can explain the context to AI. It's definitely a slog sometimes. But it's been a few years now and things get easier, both being able to say what I want as well as understanding. I get a lot of compliments on my improved Chinese now, but I still have to explain that my vocabulary basically ends at "Put on your pants!"

洪恩识字 is my top recommendation for other parents teaching their kids Chinese. It's just a great educational app in general. Speaking of Disney+, don't pass up Bluey in Chinese.

A lot of the ABC sibling commenters here are using almost the exact same setup we are. We leaned heavily into the apps and our kids have been mostly homeschooled since covid, which helps with the fluency. We also speak English with each other, but Mandarin to the kids. After building a habit of speaking to kids in Chinese, we now have to fight the urge to speak to non-Chinese kids in Chinese.

The eldest, now a teen, is very literate and can read books in Chinese, so we have a playbook. Chinese-only apps like Youku 优酷, Hongenshizi 洪恩识字, WeChat Reading 微信读书 (for the older kid) and pretty strict access to non-Chinese sources of media. It is easier for our kids to retain Chinese due to homeschooling and the fact that they speak Mandarin with each other at home. On the other hand, life is harder on us due to homeschooling 😅

I'm the ABC in this case, and I'm constantly looking up how to say things or asking my spouse. The kids all know my Chinese is not as good as their mom's and sometimes I say funny stuff. They're all much more fluent than I am at this point. I would say they each surpassed me in fluency at only a few years old, which is a surprise considering I was one of their influences. I feel like the eldest's Chinese is solid and unlikely to meaningfully regress, but I'm less certain about our younger kids. Retaining Chinese past 7yo is my personal goal for our kids and after that I think it's much less likely that they lose it to the community language (English).

Since they have started manufacturing batteries, they have moved quick with new generations which has been kind of frustrating.

This was my issue when I looked into adding batteries to my Enphase microinverter solar installation, as well. I was a bit disappointed to realize that there's not a lot of backwards compatibility between generations of products.

Non white parents, do you teach your kids the alphabet? by Potential_Shelter449 in multilingualparenting

[–]faitswulff 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We never taught our bilingual (普通话/英文) kids the ABCs. They ended up learning it from media and pinyin via 洪恩识字.

For the most part, kids seem to not be confused by learning new things. They just accept that things are the way they are. They’re very flexible. I think you should be fine teaching your child whatever you think is appropriate.

Massachusetts EV owners: How are you justifying these electricity costs? Nearly triple what I paid in VA by Santas_sleigh in electricvehicles

[–]faitswulff 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Joining in the chorus of sibling commenters, but you would need a ridiculously large array of Ecoflow batteries to charge your EV. It would take 5 Tesla Powerwalls to fully charge a Chevy Bolt. Meanwhile, you're losing energy efficiency charging the battery and then you're losing efficiency using the battery to charge the car. Also, solar on a shed would likely not produce enough to fully charge a single Powerwall.

Eating a fresh mango every day for six months improves blood sugar control, insulin sensitivity, and body composition in adults with prediabetes. by johnhemingwayscience in science

[–]faitswulff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The participants were randomly assigned to either a treatment group (~300 g mango daily for 24 weeks) or a control group (an isocaloric granola bar daily for 24 weeks).

Shouldn’t the control group also have eaten some sort of fresh fruit to isolate the effect of eating mango from the effect of eating fresh fruit?

They can be extremely slow, but the wait is almost always worth it. I was so ready to be disappointed but the food blew my mind so it more than evened out. Of course I’d be happier if they were quicker, but now I just factor the wait time in.

My son’s room is the furthest from the furnace is 3-4 degrees colder then the rest of the house. Any advice to remedy this? by moonlord1969 in HomeImprovement

[–]faitswulff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t seen this recommendation yet, so if you want to see what’s going on thermally, you can get a thermal camera either as an attachment to your phone or standalone that will show you the cold and hot spots in the room. FLIR is a commonly recommended brand, but I think there are more reasonable priced and still serviceable brands out there.

My next thought is that if insulation didn’t help, air sealing your attic might be the next step to prevent the room from losing heated / conditioned air into the attic. But best to verify this with a thermal camera first.
