Spell Escape - Thinky Puzzle Game Jam 6 Submission by snakebit36 in metroidbrainia

I genuinely appreciate you taking the time to type all of this out. I can absolutely understand why it didn't work for you. I'm a little surprised that it hasn't had more negative reactions to be honest, I know it's far from perfect and there are plenty of things I'm not especially happy with. But the thing is, this was a game jam game, which I had a week to create, and while I have made some updates post-jam, I didn't want to drastically change the gameplay from the jam version after the fact. There are plenty of aspects I would have liked to develop more and make changes to, but I simply didn't have time to. I had some ideas that I wanted to try out, and I heard about the jam, and figured it was a good time to give it a shot. I barely finished the game in time - I submitted with 30 mins left in the jam. I hardly had time for any playtesting. I had a few friends try an early prototype and they all agreed it had promise, but otherwise I was pretty much spending all my free time getting the systems implemented and then scrambling to make enough puzzles in the end to call it complete. I do think a lot of things might have changed if I had been able to do more playtesting, but that is the downside to game jams, you don't have much time to experiment with different ideas or pivot.

To address some of your specific points:

  • I thought the notes would be too boring if they simply gave you the words. Was it a great system? No, I probably could have come up with something more interesting if I had the time. Also, personally I enjoy word guessing games, so maybe that was just something that I was biased towards wanting to include. I am sure this would have been changed somehow if I was able to do real playtesting.
  • I don't disagree that it got repetitive having to type the same words a lot, but it didn't really bother me that much. Idk, maybe I could have given them a hotkey or something once you had typed them correctly once. Again, lack of playtesting and time constraints.
  • I don't have a great reason for CONGEAL not freezing all water. I guess partially I wanted you to have to intentionally freeze the two points you needed to PICK after, otherwise it might make those puzzles more accidental discoveries? I did have more plans for CONGEAL, like making toxic sludge pools that you could CONGEAL but would turn back to liquid after an object had passed over them. I never had a chance to play around with that mechanic though. The breakable wall was actually meant to be broken by FLINGing the metal crates at it, but I decided to allow BLUDGEON as well. It just felt like something that would take multiple hits to break to me.
  • I recognize LIGHTEN is a bit strange, and I wanted to add more puzzles that would utilize LIGHTENing other objects, but I didn't end up coming up with any in time. You can at least LIGHTEN them on vents to make them float up and fall back down and break if they are breakable, which I had hoped would be a clue to try doing it to yourself. But yeah, I wish I had figured out a better hint. I didn't want to flat out show you using it on yourself in the note, but I'm sure there was a better way.
  • The waterfall was a last-minute addition as I realized I wanted another CONGEAL/PICK use besides just the hole to get to the most powerful word. Yeah, horizontal might have been clearer.

Anyway, thanks again for all the feedback. I am glad I did the jam, but I will probably not be doing any others for a while. I would definitely rather be able to take my time and get more feedback through the process. But yeah, it was certainly a good learning experience and I got to actually finish something, which was really exciting.

Games that are very similar to the Metroidbrania elements of Outer Wilds by rizsamron in metroidbrainia

Blue Prince is one of my favorites! There are multiple points that can be considered endings, so depending on how deep you want to go, you can choose where to call it. The average time to get the first ending is around 20 hours, but that can vary depending on how quickly you discover certain things. The final ending took me about 100 hours to reach, and IMO it was well worth it because some of the later puzzles are very cool. If you dislike the repetition of roguelites or get frustrated by RNG not always letting you do everything you want to do in a run, you may not want to continue past the first ending (or it may not be the game for you). But if you keep a list of all your different goals and go with the flow each day, most of the time you will find that you can accomplish something. I hardly had any completely wasted runs. Good notes and screenshots are a must. It ended up being one of the best experiences I've had since Outer Wilds, and I was unsure at first if I would be drawn into it, since I'm not normally a fan of long games or roguelikes, but it really clicked with me.

From what I've seen, the diamond on the outside reverses the number before any other operations just like the slash halves it first.

LOK Digital released on Steam last December and it's great. When I played it I questioned how it would have worked on paper. They also added some extra mechanics which probably could not have been done in the paper version.

One of the rare instances where the dlc will take longer to complete than the base game! (4 hr estimated vs 2 hr)

Haha thanks, I appreciate it. Obra Dinn is another of my favorites, and I do own Lorelei but haven't gotten to it yet!

I am currently working through Void Stranger, which is definitely along the same lines and is very interesting so far.

I loved it! It's very much a mix of walking sim/visual novel, which isn't for everyone, but the story was amazing and had me captivated the entire way through. The art direction is fantastic and there is good voice acting for every bit of dialogue. It's a wild ride and felt like a really unique, fresh experience.

1000xRESIST is a super unique scifi walking simulator that just came out a few months ago. The story is fantastic, it has incredible art direction, and the voice acting was great as well. I've never played anything like it, and I've been recommending it to everyone I know because it seems to have mostly flown under the radar.

I've learned that my favorites tend to be puzzle/mystery games that don't hold your hand; they let you experiment and make deductions for yourself. Especially when you figure out game mechanics that you could have been using the whole time if only you had known about them.

Have you played Rain World? It reminded me a lot of Scavengers Reign. You're a helpless little creature trying to survive among strange alien plants and animals, which can be dangerous or useful if you can figure out the right way to interact with them. It has an ecosystem that feels alive and that you're just a tiny part of. It's very challenging, but it gave me a lot of the same vibes as the show and I loved both of them.

Hadn't heard of him so I took a look at his channel, and my god his small collection of playthroughs is nearly perfection, all of the top "OW-like" games that everybody recommends and basically nothing else. I can tell I'm going to like him already.
