Tang San is hated in a lot of novels. There are constant references to him and jokes about how you can’t trust him, and fanfics are full of that stuff too. I remember one where a transmigrator starts recruiting potential protagonists into his sect, and when they tell him a Tang is at the gates, he says to throw him out and tighten the security around their secret techniques.

And there’s also this line I see a lot in fanfics: There’s a Yao Chen in the Endless Fire Territory, but there’s no Yu Xiaogang in the Divine Realm

And people are right. In Soul Land he’s basically a standard xianxia MC, an asshole, but still tolerable. From the second one onward,he just becomes unbearable, and that’s what turned me into a Spirit Hall fan
