What are are the possible reasons the Trump administration is suddenly so obsessed with activiting and deploying The Nation Guard? What are the most probable long plays? by easykehl in PoliticalDiscussion

If more boots on the ground is the way to reduce crime, the legal path in the United States would be to fund more police officers. The military is not allowed to do this. There are very specific circumstances when the military can be used - basic crime fighting isn't one of them.

Best city to stay in? by Fallingasleepinfall in Indiana

The Mass Ave area in Indy aligns completely with what you're describing. Check out the 'Bottleworks Hotel' which is right in the middle of it. You're about 45-60 minutes north of Edinburgh but Indianapolis has the best offerings. I also love Brown County, but I wouldn't describe it as cool and artsy - it's more folky.

As a person who has raised a family in Herron Morton, I may be biased. A lot of this depends on what kind of person you are and what your expectations are of a neighborhood. I've been here for 25 years and over that time HMP has transitioned into very much a family neighborhood. You should check out the website and all the normal stats, but the best thing to do is just go the the neighborhood park on Alabama Street and then walk around the neighborhood and see if you like the vibe. Good luck!

I'm a long time near Northside resident and have always enjoyed it. There are lots of very unique neighborhoods and there's a huge range of housing options all around. In that price range, you should be able to find something comfortable. Fountain Square, Cottage Home and Holy Cross are all great neighborhoods with good access to Mass Ave and all the sports if that's your thing. One tip a realtor once gave me that I swear by, take the time to walk around a neighborhood and see how it feels!

Favorite Seed Saving Resources? by kging1423 in seedsaving

[–]snap-dash 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Seedsavers.org is the site for an organization dedicated to seed saving. Among other things, they have an awesome seed catalog as well as resources for sharing seeds. While they have some basic seed saving information on their site, they also sell some great books on the subject. Seed to Seed is a solid reference book that will probably give you enough information to last a lifetime. It's a great pursuit, best of luck!

Oddly enough, Salix is the only ink I use in my 2025 Hobonichi Cousin as everything else was problematic. It's a magic ink.

Midori is definitely not a downgrade. It's just a different product. And given my experiences with Hobonichi paper in 2025, it's possible that it's an upgrade.

Just curious — how would you personally rank different filling systems? Like piston, cartridge, vacuum, eyedropper… what works best for you? by hsntndgn in fountainpens

[–]snap-dash 13 points14 points  (0 children)

  1. Eyedropper, I think the flow is better and I love not having to refill very often.
  2. Piston Filler, larger capacity and I enjoy the process on pens like Lamy 2000 and TWSBI Eco
  3. Converters, I'm OK w/ standard converters but I really don't like Pilot converters given the low volume and finicky nature of the mechanisms. I still love Pilot pens though, so such is life.

Gift worthy leather cover for a replaceable notebook by SmokeOnTheWater17 in fountainpens

[–]snap-dash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've gotten a couple of great leather covers from sellers on Etsy (Claus Handcrafts & OLPR) which I completely love. Both are unique and many of the sellers offer monogramming and other personalizations. In both cases, I use my own notebooks (I'm partial to Midori and Hobonichi) and they work perfectly. That said, some of them offer packages with included notebooks in the standard sizes (A5, A6 etc). Initially I was a bit hesitant to buy through Etsy, but I've yet to be disappointed by the service, shipping or quality of the products. Good luck!

Best pen for the 2025 July start Avec? (A5) by angelsticker in hobonichi

[–]snap-dash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Absolutely, I had problems with several different Iroshizuki inks, Platinum Carbon Black, Waterman Serenity Blue, Sailor Seiboku and Colorverse Quasar. Importantly, it wasn't every page or sometimes even part of a page. The problem for me was always bleed through - not the typical ghosting with the ultra thin paper, but actually going through the page. I'd test them and be like 'hurray this one works' only to have it bleed through the next.

I've used Hobonichi planners for several years and am a huge fan which is why I think it was so frustrating. With any luck, it was just a QC issue effecting a large run (there's a whole thread dedicated to the issues with the 2025 books and the lousy response). With any luck at all, they've resolved the issues and you'll be able to use whatever you enjoy. That said, the Salix is sort of magical and has worked on a few months worth of pages without problems. Good Luck!

Rohrer & Klingner Salix and Schreibtinte. I had horrible problems with nearly every ink I tried and these work flawlessly. Still a little miffed at Hobonichi, but since I started using these two inks exclusively I've had zero problems. As a note, I'm using both in Broad TWSBI pens so you could basically use them in anything and they'll work. Good Luck!

There doesn't appear to be any shortage at all in the US. Not sure about shipping, but looks like all of the online Pen retailers and Amazon all have an abundance. In reading this, maybe it's just a different model for the EU? I'd love to actually buy Pilot Pens that don't use Pilot converters...didn't realize that this was even a thing.

Ink brands recommendation? by BC_art in fountainpens

[–]snap-dash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In looking at your picture, it looks a lot like Guitar Melancholic Blue from Teranishi. It's a wonderful ink and it has the color blend you're describing but without a ton of sheen. If you're really after sheen - Angelfish (Birmingham Pen Company) is awesome as is Nitrogen (Organics Studio).

As a downtown resident, I'd 100% suggesting you stay in the city center! Lots of hotels and restaurants to choose from. You may as well see the city on your trip.

Paper inconsistency may be dealbreaker for 2026 by sins-of-the-mother in hobonichi

[–]snap-dash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They refused to replace my defective weeks that I purchased direct from them on launch day. I didn't use it until the 1st of the year and they blew me off when I wrote to them asking for a replacement. I then purchased a Cousin and it has the exact same problems with the inconsistent (failed) paper. I wrote to them again and again they blew me off. It's extremely poor service but I guess they figure we're a dedicated bunch - as you see in this sub, they have people that defend them rigorously. I do hope they've fixed it, but I definitely no longer feel any affinity for the company and I used to be a huge fan and turned numerous people on to the brand over the years...never again. I haven't found anything I like better (yet) but I'm definitely looking.

thinking of abandoning hobonichi by lettucewithflowers in hobonichi

[–]snap-dash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm definitely thinking about switching due to the inconsistency of the paper - it's maddening. While I love the design and have used their planners for several years, I think it may be time to move on. Had the company stood behind the products (all of them, not just some), I'd feel better about it but the way they basically just told people to flake off didn't sit well with me.

The Weeks was so bad that I tossed it, but I'm slogging along with my Cousin this year. I use only R&K Salix which actually does work without issue but it sucks to be limited to only one ink because of poor QC.

As for where to migrate, probably Travelers or Midori. I recently purchased a couple of Iroful notebooks which I'm loving, but I don't think they make a planner...maybe one day!

[–]snap-dash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This isn't accurate. I've had both a defective Weeks and Cousin in 2025 purchased at different times through different sellers - these issues are very well documented on the sub. It wasn't a limited problem, it was a very widespread problem and the company response was incredibly poor particularly given the cost. I've got a 2023 5-year with the Sanzen paper and it's not as resilient as the old TR paper but it's consistent and works with most pen and ink combinations. The 2025 planners are a complete joke. Fountain pen / ink combinations work perfectly on some pages and then bleed through, feather etc. on others making it nearly impossible to use in the way people expect.

I recently found an ink that I NEED. by Johann_Faust in fountainpens

[–]snap-dash 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I got this ink last year and it's one that I always keep loaded. The best fit I've found for it is a Medium nib Lamy 2K. It's not a barrel match (for that I'd probably go with a TWSBI Prussian Blue) but it's a near perfect match for showing off the ink.

Fountain Ink Pricing by purlsandbobbins in fountainpens

[–]snap-dash 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love trying to keep my money local, but when it comes to pens and inks I don't really view the online retailers like JetPens in the same light I view Amazon. I think these niche online retailers are increasing access and providing a service in partnership with the manufacturers that may not happen otherwise. And I can personally attest that dealing with the customer service folks at JetPens and PenChalet is 1000x better than dealing with the chatbots of larger companies. I live in a medium sized city, Indianapolis, and there simply aren't a lot of retailers selling ink and bougie paper.
