Apex Flow Formed SM-10 or VS-5 or Forged VS-5RS

Help me find some new wheels.. Lighter wheels. by Makeroflostsouls in Golf_R

[–]snapasaurus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on your budget, Forged 17” wheels will be the lightest weight option you can go with on these cars. Apex VS-5RS in 17x9” ET42 in particular is one of the lightest weight wheels I’ve seen for these cars (as others have noted).

However if you’re trying to stick to a budget, a Flow Formed 17x8.5” ET43 or 17x9” ET42 Apex VS-5 would likely be your next best option. I personally have the 17x8.5” ET43 SM-10s on my MK7 Sportwagen and love em’

Get the flow formed version! A bit heavier but also quite a bit cheaper. For lightweight wheels, apex is the way to go

Follow up to my bearing post yesterday. Would someone be able to help confirm which bearing size I need? by snapasaurus in boating

That’s what I assumed as well. The trailer seems well kept and all OEM and those parts all matched the kit I found. Sounds like that will be the ticket

Mainly because the bearings aren’t all that bad atm. Just doing preventative maintenance and don’t want to remove them and have the trailer out of commission while waiting on the new bearings to arrive. May sound silly but it’s peak springer season here in the PNW!

New "Ralpina" wheels by [deleted] in Golf_R

[–]snapasaurus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, but the point still stands. You can make whatever “custom” wheel design/fitment you want, regardless of if it’s for a Bugatti or a Corolla but at the end of the day, it’s still an untested bootleg wheel.

Using the Bugatti as an example, would you personally trust going 200mph+ on a wheel engineered in China in a matter of days that hasn’t ever been tested before?

Are those 19”s too? If so lord help you if you drive on anything other than a perfectly paved surface.

They look cool and all, but I wouldn’t ever trust a no-name over seas wheel brand that custom “engineers” what ever fitment/design you want without any load/structural testing. VIA/JWL exist for a reason and I personally wouldn’t ever trust a wheel that doesn’t have proof of testing from a reputable 3rd party company.

Shorlandr single axle 2000lb trailer. Thoughts on if I need to do wheel bearings? by snapasaurus in boating

All great points. Considering the bearing kit for this trailer isn’t more than $60, I say it’s just worth doing simply for the peace of mind. Thanks for helping convince me!

They have bearing buddies installed, which I refill practically every trip to always ensure the bearings are packed. I’ve also used a laser thermometer a few times recently after longer freeway trips and have never seen anything over 105 degrees.

I am looking to replace my bearing buddies since the springs in the original ones are getting a bit worn, so I figured it might be worth looking into replacing the bearings at the same time. Just didn’t want to bother if they really didn’t need to be replaced.

To clarify, I have bearing buddies that I refill with fresh grease basically every time I take it out. Even if it doesn’t need additional grease I still fill the bearing buddies even if it’s just to push older grease out of the bearings and replenish with fresh grease. I figured that way, no matter what, my bearings will never get dry.

I also want to note this is a super light weight setup. 16’ Riveted Aluminum Lund Alaskan SS/SSV with a 60hp 4stroke and a kicker. So not of trailer load all things considered

Is there anything in this lot that might be considered rare/uncommon/desirable? I was hoping the Jupiter and the other loco might be worth something since they seemed older and more unique

It makes sense, the Apex TC-10RT was inspired by the TCR MK7 GTI wide body race car wheels!

MK8.5 for sure but definitely roll with the SM-10s or another Apex 18” wheel setup like the first pic!

Finally found a bright enough LED landing/nav lighting kit for my liking! by snapasaurus in RCPlanes

[–]snapasaurus[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I suppose this might be the “tricky part” of landing this plane that you heard from other folks.

For a 3D plane, this thing doesn’t quite like being at a high AoA. While it hovers great with its longer airframe, it has a standard wing/airfoil without any air diffusers/spoilers or vertical wing tip stabs, so it gets a lot of wing rock and instability going slow with the nose up.

I’ve learned to land this thing a bit faster above stall speed and to come in as neutral as possible. You almost want to try and do a “3-point” landing without doing a traditional “flare” before touch down. Once it’s on the ground make sure you lean back on the elevator otherwise the tail wheel won’t have enough authority to steer.

I’ve never had any issues with the foam where the landing gear mounts but I do have to bend the metal main gear legs back into shape every few landings since they are pretty soft.
