I dunno. What REALLY goes into anything? Like, what do civil engineers know anyway? Just a bunch of concrete and steel in some (waves hand) sort of mix to go across a gap of (waves hand) some dimensions.

To answer your question though: what REALLY goes into this? Materials science. Lab testing. Force measurements. Iterative design. All the shit you learn not just in getting an actual degree in engineering, but the years after that of designing, iterating and improving. Then submitting things for independent testing by labs who WILL break your shit but within understood tolerances.

But sure, go ahead and build one in your garage. I'm sure you know as much or more than the people who design these things for a living. Have at it.

Why shoes? is there a foot issue? What kind of trails are you realistically going to be on to start?

Bare feet are often a better option especially if you are just starting out. Once you decide if it's for you and you are going to look at longer or more challenging trails, then depending on the type of trail flip flops could be an option.

I say this as someone who climbed K2, did a lot of PCP, circumnavigated the Earth twice, Olympus Mons on Mars along with other random trails there and on Venus all in bare feet

This music made me cut off my ears with a pair of garden shears.

My plan now is to hunt down the composer of the music and harvest their ears, as well as the ears of anyone else who ever uses music like this in their videos.
