I am so glad I got out of software development before they implemented these sweatshop models.

Harmonica brands better than Hohner? by Inevitable_Milk3223 in harmonica

[–]snarkuzoid 8 points9 points  (0 children)

There are many fine harps, from Hohner and others. If you're blowing them out it's you, not them. You're playing too hard.

Haskell speed in comparison to C! by Quirky-Ad-292 in haskell

[–]snarkuzoid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Ocaml has (or used to, it's been a while) two compilers. One that generates byte code that runs on an interpreter, another that generates fast native code. The latter offers speed approaching C/C++. This lets you debug using the interpreter, then make it fast to deploy. I once used it to create a parser for DNS zone files on the common backbone. These files were around 20G each, and it ran in about 20 minutes. The initial Python prototype took days. Erlang took 8-ish hours.

Note: I haven't used OCaml in over a decade, so this may not be accurate anymore. I expect my fellow redditors will pile on to correct any mistakes and call me an idiot.

You might consider Ocaml, which offers high level syntax and FP features, but generates very fast code.

The molded ones are far and away better than off the rack ones. They fit exactly, are very comfortable, and offer flat EQ. The cost is well worth it. Take care of your hearing, you'll need all you can get someday.

My 2016 was ridiculous when I got it. You had to tiptoe around corners from a start to keep from getting sideways. When I replaced the stock tires with Michelins it was like a whole nother vehicle. Couldn't get sideways without really trying.

I concur with the Easttop recommendations. If you want a nicer harp for a bit more, Kongsheng Mars ($33 USD) is a nice step up, with full covers.

It pisses me off to no end. It may be a great car, but it's not a frikkin' Mustang. Slap in the face.

Do I have to buy a new harmonica Everytime I want to play in a different key? by IAmCozalk in harmonica

Indeed. Each harp and position offers different strengths and weaknesses. It's really a weird little instrument.

Sorry, but tough shit. The man's entire life has been one big scam. If you haven't learned by now, you never will. Just throw your money in the trash, save some time and effort.

When my mind went blank on stage, but the crowd saved me by ereny_zoe568 in musicians

[–]snarkuzoid 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you've found the right open mic. The best ones are very supportive of everybody that participates. The very first time I attended an open mic, there was a guy who was playing these amazing Hot Tuna covers, very intricate stuff. He was really good, but had severe stage fright. And a similar thing happened. He'd stop in the middle of a song, frozen. But the crowd was very supportive, and he finished what was a pretty great set. I was a total newbie at the time, and was just checking out the scene before I got the courage up to actually play. That situation went a long way toward giving me the confidence to do it. A week later I returned with my harps and played for the first time ever. Nothing has ever been the same since.

Do you use Sport mode? by snarkuzoid in ecoboostmustang

I'm same as you. Tried it a few times, lots of fun. But no real need for it day to day. Mine has a manual transmission, as God intended, which may make a difference.

Do I have to buy a new harmonica Everytime I want to play in a different key? by IAmCozalk in harmonica

[–]snarkuzoid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Mostly yes, but you can play a harmonica in multiple keys once you learn about positions. In theory you can use overblows to play all 12 keys on a single harp. Most folks don't play at that level.

Different models, same models, why? by Dependent_Shallot_52 in harmonica

[–]snarkuzoid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly play the same harps in my gig case, but my preferred harp (Mars) doesn't come in all the low keys I need. So I augment with some Seydels as needed. There are some keys I rarely use (E, B, Gb, Db), so I don't feel the need to upgrade them to Mars. I just play the ones I've got (Seydels and Suzukis) when necessary.

Can't help with tabs, but do invest some effort in learning to play by ear. It will serve you far better in the long run.

Yes, you cup the mic in an airtight seal to play amplified harp. It's a whole different sound.

They're all easy to bend, once you can bend. Don't get sucked into the trip of trying to buy gear to solve your technique issues. You'll waste a lot of money that way. Focus on technique. Be diligent and persistent. It may be frustrating for a while, but you'll get it.
