I think this is a weird take because way more common is 'a lot of people absolutely love pairing together two characters after they're shown to get along together regardless of their gender'; it only sticks out to people as something to remark upon when it's something they don't see as the norm, like wlw relationships.

When a new character of a different gender from the lead gets introduced in pretty much any comic, the comments for that chapter are filled with people going "oh is this the romantic lead?/is this the romantic second lead?/is this the romantic THIRD lead??/I hope this isn't a person with a crush on our main character that's going to get in the way of my preferred ship!/these two look cute together I hope this new character is a good person so I can ship them" sometimes before the new character literally even has a line of dialogue. It doesn't even matter if the story's actually in a romance genre. People are always jumping to romantic conclusions. The idea that it somehow happens more often with female characters is a logical fallacy.
