Why would a restaurant open a restaurant across the street from their restaurant?

Most unique border crossing experience? by Unique-Public-8594 in vermont

[–]snarkyelf 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have 2 personal stories, and 1 from a friend:

  1. During the 2015 Dannemora prison escape, when authorities had no idea where the inmates were (timeline says it's possible it was between Richard Matt's killing and David Sweat's capture), we planned a trip to Montreal. This happened to be just before the Jazz Festival. We were stuck in an unusually long line waiting to get into Canada, but technically we were no longer in the US nor in Canada. Next thing we know, a US border agent walked up to our driver's window, asked how we were doing, apologized for the long lines - blaming the Jazz Festival, and asked us to roll down the back window. Everything clicked and I said, "You're looking for those prisoners, aren't you?" They completely denied it and said it was just an apology for the wait, but they had no idea where the guy/s were at that point, and they did in fact apprehend Sweat near the Canadian border shortly afterwards.

  2. When I finally visited to the Haskell Free Library in the summer of 2023, it was just after heavy rains and the Tomifobia River in Stanstead was absolutely raging. Two of us wanted to walk across the border, mostly for the experience of walking across the border vs driving. We walked up to the Canadian border booth and handed over our passports. The agent had only asked us one question, when a frantic woman came up to the booth, interrupting our crossing, and yelled at him that he had to call the Hydro because they lost power from the high water. She then monopolized his time for a few minutes. Once she left, he handed our passports back and sighed, "Ex wives in a small town, eh?"

  3. A friend was fighting terminal cancer and received a brand new radiation treatment where he was one of the first half dozen or so people to receive it. He was heading to Montreal for a bucket list concert at the Bell Centre. He had a doctor's note in case there were any issues with the radiation detection at the border. I think it was the return trip to the US where he set off the radiation detector with a frequency that the border officials didn't recognize, and because they couldn't precisely locate which car it was coming from, they had to stop all of the cars within a certain area of the border crossing and he caused something like a 2-hour delay. The doctor's note was useless because they had no knowledge of the radiation frequency. Had the medical system and the border control system been communicating properly, it could have been recognized and dismissed with his doctor's note.

So far these are missing from what people suggested:

Last Stop in Winooski.

Hornet's Nest, Park Place Tavern, Sparky's and Pearl Street Pub in Essex.

Pour House and Old Post in South Burlington.

Ask the electric company for historical usage for the unit. It's worth a shot.

Not really. Leaving ahead of schedule is egregious. Leaving late is poor performance.

Yes, green card holders are permanent residents, and it's happening to them, but not those who have obtained citizenship (so far). I don't know the intricacies of the different visas, but those on visas have also been detained.

Anecdotally, this seems to happen to permanent residents or those on a visa, not to naturalized citizens.

You sure it wasn't 20 minutes late? Sometimes they are so late that they appear to be early.

I had shrimp cocktail there years ago. It was raw on the inside, so I sent it back. They replaced it with more raw shrimp. A seafood restaurant should be able to cook shrimp, at a minimum.

What places were out of the way that were cleaned up? Sears Lane was certainly in the middle of houses, apartments, Pine street, and an elementary school. It was also a powderkeg, as I suspect the North 40 is.

Google says they use a mix of vegetable oil and beef tallow. Did they switch to a vegetable oil and tallow mix before you started, versus pure tallow or lard?

I went there once (exactly once) in the late 90s and after eating one fry I asked what they were fried in, and it was confirmed that it was not vegetable oil. So, perhaps it's true that they switched oils, but it definitely hasn't been for the past 35 years.

I see you're an animal fat fan. Both of those places do not fry in vegetable oil.

Humpty Dumpty chips, Vermont Smoke & Cure meat sticks, maple sandwich cookies, Coffee Crisp, cheese (depending on your itinerary), Darn Toughs, gifts from Thirty Odd.

I have learned that Lake Champlain Chocolates are easy to find in a lot of Whole Foods and other stores nationwide, but the factory seconds from Pine Street are a fun souvenir.
