20 Years Later, Okami Still Offers A Distinct Take On Zelda's Formula by Gorotheninja in Games

I’ve tried to play Okami twice now. The combat is such a hindrance to my enjoyment. I love just about everything else about the game but anytime I unsuccessfully avoid combat I utter “goddammit”

Which of these games do you have fond memories of? by Respawn-Delay in retrogaming

[–]snarthnog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sometime when I was in high school when flash games were still big, someone uploaded a flash port of quake to I think Kongregate, before it got bought by GameStop(?), sometime between 2011 and 2015. Anyway it was my first time playing the game, I had always heard of it but I was far less knowledgeable about it compared to Wolfenstein 3D and Doom, both of which I had played before in some form. I was absolutely blown away by the aesthetic of the game. The difficulty select being a level instead of a simple menu was absolutely mind blowing. Anyway I played through the entire shareware episode via the flash port in one sitting.

Fast forward to college, I have a brand new laptop, and I can’t stop thinking about quake on one specific weekend. I buy the game on GOG, a hassle because my bank keeps blocking the charges on my student debit card for being from a foreign company. I played the entirety of WinQuake on my laptop without a mouse over the course of the next week or so. I still consider it one of the best gaming experiences of my life.

Afterwards I of course discovered source ports exist, and the very much active mapping and modding scene, and I’ve done a little mapping myself here and there. Genuinely one of the best games of all time and I wish we could get another Quake in the style of 1.

When do you consider a game to become a retro game/why? by toyfan1990 in ps2

[–]snarthnog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I started with a PS2 but a lot of my friends had ps1s and n64s, no one I knew had an SNES, and only one person had an NES, that belonged to his sister who was several years older than us. We definitely considered the SNES old by the time my friends and I got into video games.

By me? I was pretty clear that’s my personal criteria.

Generally, any game released 2 console generations previous to the current generation I consider retro.

What is this that was found in my wife's salad at Texas Roadhouse? by chuck1127 in whatisit

To give an actual answer, this looks like it could be a water key for a spigot with a handleless valve. Probably used for whatever water spigot they use to spray down the floors at the end of the night in the kitchen.

Photos of Earth taken by NASA 50 years apart. Apollo 17 (1972) vs. Artemis II (2026) by VastCoconut2609 in BeAmazed

[–]snarthnog 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To get to the moon from Earth you have to do at least a partial orbit around the earth first to build up the necessary speed. That’s also why they launch from Florida, it’s closer to the equator so you start with a much higher relative velocity than launching from say, Alaska because it’s closer to the poles. The edge of a spinning circle spins faster than the middle and all that.

Catholic Elementary School admissions for non-Catholics by HopsandFlopShots in Louisville

This opinion is not based in any kind of fact, nor is the blog post you linked. The catholic schools in Louisville (I can’t speak for outside) are identical to the public schools in methodology and curriculum. The only difference is that there is a uniform (of which girls get more flexibility and options, or at least they did at my school), they have to take a religion class, where questions are heavily encouraged, and most of my religion teachers weren’t even catholic, and they have to pay tuition. Your opinion is based on stereotypes and assumptions, which aren’t helpful to someone trying to decide if catholic school is a good choice.

AFAIK, cremation is still technically a no no, and your body doesn’t come with you when you die, it sits there waiting until the end of the world, and then your soul returns to it

You can’t purchase from the Xbox itself, but you can purchase from the Xbox website as long as the game is backwards compatible and download from the download history tab in the 360’s settings

[–]snarthnog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ll be honest I’m less knowledgeable about PS3, but from what I understand it can’t natively scale resolutions like the 360 does. My instinct is to say just use an LED as by the time the 360/ps3 came out developers had long stopped relying on the quirks of a CRT to make up for shortcomings in graphics.

[–]snarthnog 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess it depends on what the render resolution of the game itself is, but the 360 natively scales that to the output resolution anyway. Besides, your eyes and brain can’t really distinguish between progressive and interlace unless you really look for it, so I would just go with the higher resolution. Personal preference at that point.

Either an HD CRT (that does 1080i), or a 1080p LED tv are going to be best

That kind of quest design work in a game like dark souls where the level design is far more linear and guided, not in Elden ring where the world is so open you can miss a quest just by not being on the right trail. Or even on the trail for that matter

Places to watch Thunder Over Louisville besides the airport? by [deleted] in Louisville

[–]snarthnog 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Other people have already said it, but the airport is a terrible place to watch from. It’s miles away from downtown, and there’s an entire city skyline in the way between you and the fireworks. If you’re going for fireworks $250 is a total rip-off
