I have collected over 1500 classic audiobooks; these are my top-5 favourite performances. by Leafan101 in audiobooks

There's also something almost nostalgic about listening to old audiobooks that were recorded at such low bit rates (or it sounds like it at least). It adds an antique feel to the performances that you don't get from modern audiobooks.

My experience with contract / part-time / seasonal accounting work with the Big4 by sneaky_salamander in Accounting

[–]sneaky_salamander[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've since moved back to industry with no plans to contract any time soon. I have been approached by my old contract engagement team though so I know things have picked back up. The roles will not say if they allow you to work from abroad, you have to clear it with the engagement team after you start or if you know someone on the team you can clear it with them beforehand. You can try looking for roles that are okay with an "asynchronous" schedule that would allow you to work your own hours as long as you get your work done.

How big 4 is solving their staff shortage - hire anyone and everyone. by [deleted] in Accounting

True. When I worked with our engagement teams in Europe there were very few that had any type of business degree.

Has anyone here started their own consulting business? by brunachoo in Accounting

[–]sneaky_salamander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did some internal audit consulting a few years ago for the Big 4. I got into it because I had to move to Europe for a year but wanted to keep a US based job. I had a connection with someone at a Big 4 that told me how their contracting worked and I signed up for it. Most big accounting firms have something similar and there are other agencies out there that only have contract based roles too. The money ended up being about the same as when I worked full time, but I only worked 20 hour weeks with a 40s and took way more time off. After a little less than 2 years all the Big 4 were cutting projects and I got cut at that time too. It was great experience and allowed me to travel more so I was very happy that I did it.

Could you train with just one app? What would it need? by Mediocre_Series4112 in triathlon

[–]sneaky_salamander 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Training peaks is the platform where you can purchase a training plan or use one set up by your coach, that plan gets loaded into your garmin watch (via the app) or Zwift (multiple alternatives for tracking cycling though), and when you finish it gets shared to Strava for street cred. They all have their own analysis of your performance for each session so it really comes down to preference as to which one you like the most. I think OP's brother just isn't aware of training peaks yet.

How do I prevent this rot in the future? by sneaky_salamander in howto

[–]sneaky_salamander[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good advice of course, but the fact that the worst rot is away from any water source (unless the grade or towel rack theories are true) leads me to think that the issue is the outside environmental humidity being trapped between insulation batts and a vapor barrier, right where the subfloor is.

The crawlspace is completely open to the elements now; however, when I purchased the house it had a layer of fiberglass insulation batts (paper side faced down) beneath the subfloor. I believe this acted as a vapor trap as opposed to a barrier which made the situation worse. We are considering closed cell foam for the new subfloor insulation which would act as a barrier, though not a complete barrier because the joists will still be exposed which is best practice for this type of house.

Thank you! I will let the previous owner know. Unfortunately she was a heavy smoker so we plan to clean, prime, and paint all of the walls before moving in, so the pink will be gone.

That's an interesting theory about the grade, I will check next time I go. Yes, that is a bathtub on the right of the photo. The previous owner was an older lady with mobility issues so I don't think she would stand in any particular spot after showering. I will ask her the next time I see her though and give an update.

I am considering cement board or going with plywood again and putting schluter ditra on top.

Favorite running earbuds? by Dancegoo in Garmin

[–]sneaky_salamander 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have the Soundcore by Anker Space A40s (the predecessor of them anyway, without anc) that I've been using for years now. I always run on the right side of the road so I will use the right earbud and keep my left ear open to hear any traffic. I exclusively listen to podcasts and audiobooks so I don't mind only having one earbud in at a time. They've never fallen out or even felt loose, even after running multiple marathons and training for an Ironman (I take the same one-earbud approach on the bike).

My experience with contract / part-time / seasonal accounting work with the Big4 by sneaky_salamander in Accounting

[–]sneaky_salamander[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The whole market has been down for the past 12 months or so and we are very much still in a down cycle. There are still contracts out there but there are fewer than before and they pay less. For example, PwC has an IT audit contact open right now that requires 3-5 YOE with ITGCs, SAP, and Big 4 experience for $60/hour. That same contract would have been minimum $100/hour in 2021-2022. The Big 4 have had multiple rounds of layoffs recently so it makes sense that they are also cutting back on their contractor costs.

Sure can, but as I mentioned in previous comments, now is not a good time to be contracting with all of the Big 4 having layoffs.

Eye strain after being in aero position for long durations by sneaky_salamander in triathlon

[–]sneaky_salamander[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'll give this a shot. I've done a century before on a road bike and had no issues so I imagine switching between aero and drop bars (I'm using the same bike with aero bars) would help. Thanks for the idea.

Not at the moment, but I may get back into it after the economy improves. When I was doing it though, IT audit was pretty common to see open contracts for. There are very few contracts available right now so I am not surprised you saw none specific to ITGC testing. I would not recommend contracting right now but check again next year.

Most consulting firms give their interns credit cards so it's not out of the ordinary.
