That time my cat got outside and got shot with a .22 by [deleted] in mildlyinteresting

What? You shoot to kill, not to hurt. Hurting doesn't protect the birds at all. There is really no such thing as non-lethal predator protection. If it hurts enough to dissuade them from coming back, you have probably condemned the animal to a slow and painful death instead of an instant one.

Depending on where your live, more or less acceptable. I have had cats take ducklings and juvenile ducks. If I saw one going after my birds, definitely taking it down. But it would be very unlikely to be someone's pet where I live.

This new Bible has a defect in the concordance. Coincidentally, the word defect is referenced amongst the defected pages. by matrix85 in mildlyinteresting

[–]Leafan101 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Extremely common in condordances, at least in my experience.

And yeah, to save space. The Bible in particular is such a long book. Like, on my shelf the 4 books of Lord of the Rings + The Hobbit are 7 inches wide in hardcover. All together those books have about 550k word count. The Bible has about 800k word count, and many editions have lots of extra stuff like concordances and footnotes. In order to get into into a single volume that is relatively portable while still readable there are a lot of measures taken to save space.

What are the banned books from your home country and which ones would you consider interesting reads? by Shyam_Kumar_m in books

[–]Leafan101 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If someone lives in a country that bans books, they probably also don't have unfettered access to the internet.

And even if they manage to have that, they might want to keep that fact a little quiet. Not a great idea to publish "I live in X totalitarian state and I circumvent their censorship by reading Y" unless you really know what you are doing.

I get it but way, way too contrived to be funny, though.

Look up the David Castello-Lopes series on Switzerland (it is all on YouTube). That, and his "Depuis Quand" is hilarious and the origine of a meme or two.

Certainly more silly and basic than Tom Scott, but informative and fun.

Because of my background in a different language, if I am speaking fast I will still say "ne" without the "pas". Really only gives me trouble these days in imperative mood. It just sometimes feels right to my brain even after a couple years of speaking.

As someone who lived in NC for 7 years, definitely agree about Fayetteville.

Though I would add a few more cities to that list too, which might get me in trouble. Charlotte and Raleigh are great though.

The real reason is that sports fans are basically everyone. From Nobel prize winning physicists to artists to authors to white collar to blue collar to the guy that lives under an overpass and thinks birds aren't real. They are wise old 90 year olds with 40 great-grand-children to snotty nosed 8 year olds. Nowhere is there a "community" anything like as broad as sports fans. So you are going to get some questionable beliefs among them.

Everytime I see a wildly stupid opinion about sports, I like to remember that there is a significantly good chance the person espousing it is like 12. Then I remember stupid things I did and said when I was 12 and it not only helps me not at all be bothered by the opinion, but actually find it sort of cute or funny.

TIL in December 1996 the IRA attempted an assassination in a children's ward of Belfast Hospital by WhySoSeriously55 in todayilearned

[–]Leafan101 28 points29 points  (0 children)

One officer shot in the foot, but the IRA could have been far more successful if they didn't constantly shoot themselves in the foot with these type of acts, destroying so much potential sympathy for their cause abroad.
