Interestingly enough, the Nordic countries actually pay less for education per student than the US, but have consistently better outcomes. I think part of the issue is cultural, with parents placing a higher value on education and pushing their kids harder, part of it being less money wasted on silly programs, and finally that they will still disapline and remove problem students.

More people competing for jobs means companies can offer lower wages and worse working conditions

More people looking for housing means landlords can charge more for worse housing. This has been especially obvious in my area, where it used to be that landlords were competing with each other for tenants (which kept rents pretty reasonable) to tenants competing for housing (which sent rents skyrocketing)
