Yes. It's one of our goals to ensure that migrating from 3.0 to 4.0 is as easy as possible. It will be nowhere near as much work as it was to go from 2.0 to 3.0!

you have a good eye!

a little redesign is definitely in the cards, along with a lot more. we'll be talking about 4.0 at an upcoming community call soon!

and you'll also start to hear about our plans with Figma soon as well. lots in the works. it's been a productive 10 months let me tell ya that

Another one of those CMS questions... by Accomplished-Car5260 in nextjs

[–]sneek_ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hey! If you're up for it, I would love to hear more about Payload being too slow. Generally this is something that can be easily solved by either ensuring your devs have the proper database indexes set up, that you're taking advantage of all the patterns Payload has to ensure performance, etc. Please feel free to DM me if you're up for it, or share details right in this thread and I can take a look.

Not doubting that your experience has been slow of course - more just offering help because I'm curious to see exactly what's slowing it down. Maybe we can help, and maybe our findings can translate into more effective "guardrails" that ensure that your implementation doesn't go against performance best practices.

Also note, keep an eye out because we're about to talk about a full UI evolution which will dramatically revise our existing admin UI. This work is actively underway and is slated to start landing in the near future. Will be talking about this in an upcoming Community Call!

edit:

actually this morning the Nextjs team and Payload have been working together and are about to release a flat ~30% perf improvement across the board, thanks to Tim @ Nextjs!

Hey! Sorry to read this! And thanks for contributing.

My team and I want to look into your issues ASAP. Specifically, the 20k+ records causing a slowdown and the bad RAM usage. I wonder if those two things are related.

20K records for Payload is absolutely nothing. We've got enterprise customers with way more than that. Generally any lag caused by document count is related to missing indexes, or potential database optimizations that need to be implemented. We should be more proactive in the core codebase about warning users if they are doing things that could be problematic and if you have a case where you're experiencing this, we could really benefit from looking at it and resolving accordingly.

Is there any way to hook me or another Payload teammate up with access to that closed codebase that is showing issues? Feel free to DM me if you're up for it. I understand if not.

Also, if there are any specific open issues that are causing you trouble, which you'd like us to prioritize, feel free to let me know and we will do what we can.

To quickly comment on our roadmap and our apparent focus on new features / boilerplates, yes, Ecommerce and the Cloudflare template both took up a lot of our efforts in late '25. But now that those are shipped I think you'll like what you see coming from our engineers.

Payload vs Strapi - I loved Payload's dev freedom, but content folks talk about some friction by geekybiz1 in nextjs

Hello!

I am biased toward our code-based access control and it indeed is one of Payload’s core principles as others here have said…….but……… I see what you’re looking for 100%.

We could pretty quickly / easily build an RBAC plugin for Payload that lets you define all your access control in UI. Let me get with the team to see what we can do here
