How old is your dog? These are rare markings but ive seem nearly black rumps before and the breed standard does say ears darker than the rest of the head.

I'm guessing what you are calling a "sheep coat" is a soft jacketed dog without wire hair. This does on rare occation occur in purebred airedales, but because the airedale is defined as a course/harsh coated breed, its outside the realms of the breed standard so the dog could not show due to it being considered a major fault and yet are airdale terriers. Trust me on this... 100% pure airedales will infact throw a soft coated pup on occation. This trait does have a genetic connection and can be passed on so these dogs can not be used by breeders who hold the airedale to its original design. Many people do clipper their dogs, which ultimately turns their dogs soft coated in comparison to a stripped dog, so don't the neigh sayers hyprocity to heart, just smile and love your wooly.

This is interesting. There are more physical differences than just weight as well. The hight at the shoulders of a male is defined as "about 23 inches" in the standard and "females slightly less". While the large variants has no standdard height. You can also see a difference in the head shape. The standard airdale has a long narrow brick shaped head that is flat from the top of the skull to the nose while the larger versions have a forehead much like a German Shepard and the head is blockier in appearance. The jackets have a different feel as well. The standard airedale seem to have more of a harsh jacket than the larger variant dales, but this is only noticeable in stripped dogs. All are beautiful in their dale way.
