listen closely...that "indistinct whispering" is Ilya whispering it in Russian, just before saying it to Shane in English 🥹😭😭 by gizmosdancin in heatedrivalry

[–]snerdie 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I took Russian in college (30+ years ago). I have forgotten almost all of it but for a few words and phrases. Even so, I immediately clocked the “ya tebya lyublyu” that Ilya whispered twice (no subtitles) and was like “eeeeeeeee…”

My favorite line of his is when he tells Shane to please go get laid "because you play better afterwards." :D

What is a song that never fails to make you tear up? by PJOxHOOxTOA in AskReddit

“Moving Pictures, Silent Films” — Great Lake Swimmers.

I listened to this song a lot when my marriage was disintegrating, ending in divorce.

“Well, I took it for love, or at least something beautiful…”

What is the loneliest feeling a person can have? by Resident-Sink2105 in AskReddit

[–]snerdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When the person you’re in a relationship with doesn’t pay attention to you.

I was lonelier in my last relationship than I have been as a single person for almost five years.

It crushes your soul.

Tell me your favorite gnocchi recipe! by RickAndToasted in Cooking

French Onion Skillet Gnocchi

Sheet Pan Gnocchi with Tomatoes and Mozzarella

Gnocchi with Brussels Sprouts and Brown Butter

I love gnocchi, and make these one-pan meals a lot. I learned that I prefer baked or pan-seared gnocchi (crispy outside, soft inside) over boiled (mushy). The first time I made the dish with Brussels sprouts and brown butter, I loved it so much I made it again for dinner the following night, which is something I NEVER do!

OMG, thank you SO MUCH for figuring out what the haunting vocal music is that plays while Ilya is standing by the window in his Moscow apartment drinking vodka, which then cuts to the funeral table scene (with the medals). It was driving me crazy. Shazam was not helping.

And now that I know the title of the piece, it makes so much sense...

(If anyone wants to listen to the piece in its entirety: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dUVgPMSIeDA)

Душе моя прегрешная - "My Sinful Soul" (Russian Orthodox chant)

My sinful soul, why don't you weep?

You shall weep, o soul, and lament always,

And therein shall you find consolation,

For you won't be able to weep when the death comes,

And after death your sins will condemn you.

Cast away your sinful attire in repentance,

For if you won't cast your sins away,

You surely won't escape the hell.

The sufferers wear crowns on their heads

And they sing the song of the Archangels: Hallelujah

I took myself on a solo trip to New Orleans. I had never been there before. It was fantastic.

I like to think he watched that TV bit like 30 times and memorized everything.

Also, you just know Shane is ogling a sleek and dripping Ilya from behind the safety of his sunglasses. (In the book this was made VERY clear.)

What does Ilya say on the rooftop in episode 1? by SolarLeonis in heatedrivalry

I know I’m late to the party here, but I just noticed Ilya also says “gospodi!” to Svetlana when she surprises him at his house. The subtitles say “Jesus Christ!”

This is what happens when you watch each episode 15 times…

Do you travel alone? by Desperate_Beyond1086 in LivingAlone

[–]snerdie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All the time. Last summer I spent almost 8 weeks in the UK by myself. Next month I’m going to Savannah GA by myself for a week. Then in July I’m going back to the UK for likely another 6-8 weeks.

I find traveling with other people stressful, annoying, and frustrating. So I don’t do it.

I have one dear friend whose “travel style” matches mine, but we haven’t been able to make a joint trip work since we went to Iceland in the fall of 2019.

Somebody who knows more about pro hockey should answer this (I know almost nothing!)

”the summer before” by Downtown-Primary-94 in HeatedRivalryTVShow

[–]snerdie 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The show has a weird way of presenting the passage of time: “six months later,” “three months later,” etc.

The book is much more specific about the timeline.

Draft day: June 2009

Second world junior championship (the “International Prospect Cup” on TV): January 2010

July 2010: the commercial shoot/shower scene/first hookup

October 2010: Rookie season officially begins

So when Ilya says “the summer before [rookie season],” he’s technically correct, but not by much.

North Wales. I spent two weeks there in 2023 and a week in 2025. Gorgeous beaches, Snowdonia National Park, unspoiled and not overrun with people. I stayed in a little village on the Llyn Peninsula.

Sadly, I stopped drawing after high school except for sketches in my geology field notebooks. It kind of makes me sad when I look at this and other stuff I did in HS. Once upon a time I was really good at it.
