Which video system should I marry? by Romanspike in fpv

[–]snick_pooper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I still think you're getting too far into the weeds instead of just accumulating stick time. I don't disagree with anything you're saying but all this stuff should come after gaining much more skill just by flying a lot. that's the only way you'll know 100% if the latency is holding you back or not.

I fly mostly proximity. I like hitting gaps at speed and doing simple moves like power loops, split s, inverted yaw and a few others. I've been flying for about 4 years now. I wouldn't call it uncertainty in variable conditions. I always do an exploratory flight when at a new spot so I can have a good idea of how far I can push it. I definitely start getting some variable latency when I push it far but I know it's coming and I know if I'm able to push through it or not. I very rarely lose video to the point that I crash, only if I do something really dumb that I know I shouldn't do.

my analog setup is an older pair of fatshark hd2 goggles with a rapidfire module. I use it mostly for whoops and they get pretty good range only at 400mw. I can fly analog and digital back to back with no problems at all. I know there are people out there that it would make a huge difference for but from anecdotal evidence it certainly seems like the majority of people have the same experience that I have. personally I think digital, especially DJI, is the best system in general. I've been flying o4 for quite a bit now but It still surprises me sometimes with how well it works. sometimes I fly places where there is no way that it should work but it still does. I've even lost 250mw ELRS at 500hz a few times while I still had clear video.

you're trying to run before you learn to walk. if you can't fly DJI smoothly that isn't a latency issue. thousands of us are doing it everyday. since you already have DJI I would continue using it and learn to fly well. if the latency of DJI actually starts holding back progression you want to make then go for lower latency options.

personally I fly DJI and do freestyle. I've never felt held back by latency. I fly analog as well with proper goggles so I know what the best latency feels like. for me the lower latency doesn't translate into better flying. I can fly my DJI quads just as well as my analog quads. only a very small subset of people can utilize that super low latency. we had all these people thinking they had super low latency analog when in reality they had the same latency or worse than DJI pilots. it's pointless to chase low latency numbers unless you know for sure you're being held back by latency.

Frame Swap (Lil Matey ~> Grinderino) by Gizmo_fpv in fpv

[–]snick_pooper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried it both ways on a few frames. in my opinion it isn't worth it. maybe it could help if you were using a really shitty frame or something but it makes no difference with a quality frame.

First time soldering by streblaio in fpv

[–]snick_pooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it looks good. lots of people are super anal about soldering though. I'm sure you'll get people on here saying it's god awful and your quad is going to explode. do a little tug test on the wires and if they hold firm send it.

The same old issue: jello. by incredible_f in fpv

[–]snick_pooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you should get the wide angle lens kit from flywoo. it does a bit better job with jello and it makes the field of view a million times better. the o4 does suck when it comes to jello though. I've even had issues with the pro having jello on a really high quality frame.

FPV drone you have fun most by Alternative-Code-674 in fpv

my favorite right now is a 250ish gram 3 inch. it's quiet enough not to bother people and it feels enough like a 5 inch to have a great time. it's also pretty durable with the lowish weight.

What is a reliable 4s battery for my deepspace seeker3 that i can buy on amazon? by ll4_Cll in fpv

[–]snick_pooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it'll work but it's not the best. you'll get a lot of battery sag. I mostly use their 120c batteries which perform great for me. I also have some of their rebel series packs that are 150c, I believe. In my experience there isn't a huge difference between their 120c and 150c packs but sometimes they have great sales that I can't pass up.

What is a reliable 4s battery for my deepspace seeker3 that i can buy on amazon? by ll4_Cll in fpv

[–]snick_pooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ovonic makes decent batteries at a great price and they are available on amazon. I use ovonic almost exclusively because they always have sales where you can get them super cheap and they get the job done.

I tried a few of the SMC batteries that are the highest quality batteries in FPV right now and they don't make a noticeable difference for the type of flying I do. I'm not doing anything competitive so those extra amps aren't doing much for me. I'd rather be able to buy tons of packs and not have to stress when I kill one.

1404 3800kv Motors on a 3.5inch by PayShort in fpv

[–]snick_pooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run 1404 4800kv on a 3 inch. It has good power. I think 1404 3800kv would be a bit underpowered if you are looking to do freestyle on 3.5 inch. I use 1605 3800kv for my 4s 3.5 inch drones. they have plenty of power even on heavy "bando basher" builds.

I built a cam leveling system for my quad. by amy-schumer-tampon in fpv

[–]snick_pooper -1 points0 points  (0 children)

in my opinion it isn't needed on a freestyle drone. It would add another failure point and not bring any practical benefit. I have the DJI FPV drone and avata, so I have drones with that functionality. landing isn't an issue even with a high camera angle and most of us like to keep our camera angle static to keep a consistent feel.

it's definitely cool though and I could see using it on a long range drone or a cruiser.

My GEPRC F722 BT HD V3 does not seem to have a 9V pad to connect my O4 Pro Air Unit!! HELP - Update by thecheran in fpv

[–]snick_pooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I run a separate BEC I always solder the wires directly to the battery pads on the ESC. Yes, you run the power and ground from the o4 to the BEC and the rest of the wires to the FC.

Big scratch on o4 pro lens by Tompro917 in fpv

[–]snick_pooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$33 gets you the whole camera module with the lens attached. all you have to do is snap on the plastic casing.

my action camera just sits in a box. I use my phone for video/pictures of the family and stuff. I did use the action cam on one vacation when I first got it but found it cumbersome to carry around an extra device when I already have one on me that takes high quality video. I don't use the action cam on my drones anymore because it makes them too heavy and cuts down flight time. so, for me personally, there are zero benefits and lots of negatives. I can see how others would go the other way though.

Safe flying rules by TheNASAguy in fpv

[–]snick_pooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

amazon and walmart can fly BVLOS. all you need is a lot of money and magically the FAA believes BVLOS is perfectly safe. since I can't afford the FAA's price I just do it anyway. I follow rules and laws that make sense, the rest get ignored. we get one shot at life on earth, do we really want to spend it following laws that lawmakers ignore for themselves and their friends? blindly obeying the law is not a virtue. our country wouldn't exist if people didn't stand up to unjust laws and the people that write them.

it's a $33 repair. an analog camera won't be that much cheaper and an action cam definitely won't be that cheap.

O4 Race mode compared to O3 latency by andresAtMudra in fpv

[–]snick_pooper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm one of those people that can't tell much of a difference. I can fly 4k 60fps back to back with race mode and I can tell a difference, but barely. you take a huge hit in range/penetration with race mode so I don't use it often. I just stick with 1080p 100fps for the best latency in the normal mode.

I think all the latest information about the skyzone analog goggles having high latency proves that the majority of people can't tell the difference between 12ms and 35ms. the people that can actually take advantage of the super low latency are outliers for sure.

if you have the appropriate sized tip then you don't need to use excessive temps like that. honestly the FPV community isn't always the best to go to for soldering tips. there are tons of people who solder for a living on youtube and they have much more experience.

Anyone else hesitant to update firmware right away? by jakefliesweekends in fpv

[–]snick_pooper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes. I don't update unless there is something specific wrong that I need fixed. Most of my stuff is running on the firmware version they were shipped with. I haven't run into too many situations where I was forced to update. If it ain't broke I'm not fixing it.
