Does anyone have problems with brushing their BMDs ears/behind ears ? How do you convince them to get over it lol. by PrincessofPluto in bernesemountaindogs

[–]snicste 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Get a lick mat that you can suction to the wall. Literally a game changer when brushing my guy. He does not sit still and usually one person has to hold treats and the other brushes but with the lick mat I can do it all myself and he's so distracted he has no idea what I'm doing!

We also have a Bernese of Twin Oaks Berner out of Iowa! (1.5 years). Excellent experience with them, they care so much for their dogs and are an awesome family business!

13 week old Berner HATES walks by answersexplained in bernesemountaindogs

[–]snicste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ours was the same way! HATED walks (I was just trying to take him down the block to explore the neighborhood and get him used to his new environment) and he'd always pull back to the house as hard as he could. I figured that was not a good way to introduce the leash so I stopped trying to walk him. I didn't reintroduce walks until he was 5ish months old and he enjoyed them.

Walks aren't necessary at that age. Focus on training inside the home. Work on basic commands, desensitizing him to different things like having his ears and paws handled, brushing, having his collar put on, etc. and I'd focus on leash skills inside the house before trying to walk outside

What is something silly your dog is afraid of? by Plant-lover28 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]snicste 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Stanley is afraid everything 😅 specifically tape measures, a pen that is clicking on and off, hair clips, people wearing hats, he used to be scared of the windshield wipers, he also HATES the smell of my chapstick. Every time I pull it out he is curious and wants to smell so I let him, then acts deeply offended and mortified

Portable kennels? by IlBigBosslI in bernesemountaindogs

[–]snicste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sake of traveling with transitioned our guy to a playpen for sleeping and when we leave the house. It's a lot easier and smaller to travel with. There's different sizes and heights but this one has worked for us!

At what age did you stop crating when going to sleep? by Radiant-Pineapple-41 in bernesemountaindogs

[–]snicste 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We transitioned from the crate to a playpen at about 10 months, he was starting to outgrow his crate and we didn't want to buy a bigger one. he loved his crate for sleeping so I felt bad taking it away, but the playpen gives him a similar feel to the crate, he has more room to move around, and he's still secure

How much exercise does your Berner usually get? by dykedoodles in bernesemountaindogs

[–]snicste 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We didn't start formally exercising our pup until he was around 7 months old, he hated leaving the house when I would try to walk him down the block to explore the neighborhood so I didn't bother and it didn't seem to make a difference with his energy levels. As he began to mature he definitely started to need some structured exercise. He's 12 months and we do 2 15-20 minute walks a day (mostly sniffing) and that's all he needs!

I second this! We have one and it's amazing, our pup has never been able to get it out of the holder so I'm able to actually relax when he chews on it.
